Human Rights Watch: U.S. covering up the extent of waterboarding in CIA prisons

“Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the US government of covering up the extent of waterboarding at secret CIA prisons, alleging that Libyan opponents of Muammar Gaddafi were subjected to the torture before being handed over to the former dictator’s security police.  The New York-based human rights group has cast “serious doubt” on Washington’s claim that only three people, all members of al-Qaida, were waterboarded in American custody, claiming in a new report to have fresh evidence that the CIA used the technique to simulate drowning on Libyans snatched from countries in Africa and Asia.”

Unidentified detainee mysteriously dies at Guantanamo Bay

“A detainee died over the weekend at the US prison for ‘war on terror’ suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the ninth since the detention center opened in 2002, the US military said Monday.  The detainee, who was not identified pending notification of his government and next of kin, was found ‘unconscious and unresponsive’ by guards in the prison’s Camp Five on Saturday during a routine check, the US Southern Command said.  Eight other detainees have died at Guantanamo since 2002, including six suicides.”

Eleven Years after 9/11, Guantánamo Is a Political Prison

“Eleven years since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the majority of the remaining 168 men in Guantánamo are held not because they constitute an active threat to the United States, but because of inertia, political opportunism, and an institutional desire to hide evidence of torture by U.S. forces, sanctioned at the highest levels of government. That they are still held, mostly without charge or trial, is a disgrace that continues to eat away at any notion that the United States believes in justice.”

It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as ‘Patriot Day’. 16-Year-Old Questioned by FBI Over You Tube Video

“In another shocking example of how the federal government is repositioning itself as a secret police force to target political dissidents, a 16-year-old boy was questioned by FBI agents over a You Tube video he created for a school project which highlighted how America was slipping into a police state.  The video clip, which promotes the presidential campaign of Congressman Ron Paul, was put together by Justin Hallman as part of a project for his American Government class. The video helped earn Hallman an A+ pass and his teacher enthused about how impressed he was with Hallman’s efforts.”

More Americans see themselves as lower class

“More Americans — including growing numbers of young people and whites — see themselves as members of the lower classes, according to a study released Monday.  At 32 percent, about a third of adults consider themselves part of society’s disadvantaged sectors, up from a quarter four years ago, according to a national survey carried out by the Pew Research Center.  Thirty-nine percent of young adults aged between 18 and 29 say they are on the lower rungs of the social ladder, an increase of 14 points over 2008.”
