To make matters worse for them, the real estate slowdown has hurt their crucial revenues from sales of government-owned land, as falling prices have made developers reluctant to buy more land and build more buildings. Yet for consumers, inflation actually picked up slightly in August, creeping up to 2 percent, from 1.8 percent in July, as food prices kept rising.”

A balance sheet so constructed would create an immediate fiscal crisis in the United States.”

UBS ‘Rogue trader’ goes to court in $2.3 billion fraud trial

“A trader accused of losing $2.3 billion in a fraud at Swiss bank UBS goes on trial in London on Monday in a case expected to once again put the supervision of bankers under the spotlight.  Ghanaian-born equities trader Kweku Adoboli denies two counts of fraud and two of false accounting between 2008 and September last year.  The son of a Ghanaian former United Nations official, Adoboli worked for the global synthetic equities division at UBS in the City of London financial district.  The true magnitude of the risk exposure had been hidden through ‘fictitious’ positions allegedly taken by the trader, the bank said.”

Obama Voluntarily Resigned as a Lawyer

“Barack Obama voluntarily retired from the legal profession in January 2008. The official term is voluntarily retired, according to the website of the Illinois State Bar Association.  Remember, he was a United States Senator at the time. How many United States Senators have voluntarily retired from the practice of law and turned in their licenses? Only one that I know of.  Without explanation, this Senator quit the profession. Was this front-page news? No. It was memory hole news.”

Slovenia: No Need for Bailout Help?

“With its banking sector, including the country’s largest and state-owned lender Novo Ljubljanska Banka, saddled by heavy debts, Slovenia has stoked concerns it may have to seek an international bailout as yields for its bonds recently soared above 7%, a level seen as unsustainable by some other euro-zone members.  All three major credit-rating agencies have recently downgraded Slovenian debt on concerns about the country’s fiscal outlook and amid fears the euro zone’s leaders are losing their battle to contain the debt and fiscal crises.”

Minnesota Food Freedom Farmer: Alvin Schlangen

“Alvin Schlangen, a peaceful Minnesota farmer and founder of Freedom Farms Coop, connects people with the foods of their choice from local producers. Over the past two years, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture has illegally raided Alvin’s van, warehouse, and farm. The state has now brought 21 charges against Alvin related to food distribution; all are misdemeanor counts. Four of the misdemeanors are in trial next week. If convicted, Alvin faces up to a year in jail and hefty fines… just for helping to connect consumers to the producers and foods of their choice.”
