Widely used fingerprint reader exposes Windows passwords in seconds

“Fingerprint-reading software preinstalled on laptops sold by Dell, Sony, and at least 14 other PC makers contains a serious weakness that makes it trivial for hackers with physical control of the machine to quickly recover account passwords, security researchers said.  The UPEK Protector Suite, which was acquired by Melbourne, Florida-based Authentec two years ago, is marketed as a secure means for logging into Windows computers using an owner’s unique fingerprint, rather than a user-memorized password. The easily cracked passwords are stored in the Windows registry even after the Protector Suite software has been deactivated.”

Secret account in mission-critical router opens power plants to tampering

“The branch of the US Department of Homeland Security that oversees critical infrastructure has warned power utilities, railroad operators, and other large industrial players of a weakness in a widely used router that leaves them open to tampering by untrusted employees.  The line of mission-critical routers manufactured by Fremont, California-based GarrettCom contains an undocumented account with a default password that gives unprivileged users access to advanced options and features.”

GOP Suing to Keep Third Parties Off Ballot in November

“Around the country, the Republican Party is mounting legal challenges to keep third-party candidates off the ballot in November.  In recent weeks, with the full support and legal assistance of the Republican Party, [Gary] Johnson’s ballot status has been challenged in Michigan, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, Iowa and now Ohio.  And on August 21, the Constitution Party withdrew their petition to get on the ballot in Pennsylvania. The decision came after multiple warnings of the court costs by attorneys for the Republican Party, who have challenged the Constitution and Libertarian parties’ ballot petitions.'”

North Dakota: Statewide Medical Cannabis Proposal Will Not Appear On 2012 Ballot

“A statewide proposal to allow for the possession and state-licensed distribution of cannabis for therapeutic purposes will not appear on the November 2012 ballot.  The measure was one of two citizens initiatives rejected by the Secretary of States office on Monday. According to the AP, paid petitioners falsified thousands of names that they purported to have collected from registered voters.  Eight players on North Dakota State University’s football team are facing charges of petition fraud for their participation in the alleged scheme.”

Surveillance video disputes officer’s story about youth assault arrest

“A Cottage City 19-year-old spent nearly 4 months in jail after Corporal Donald Taylor claimed Ryan Dorm assaulted him and the gun went off as Taylor struggled with him. Attorney Jimmy Bell, who represents Dorm, says the video shows Taylor out-and-out ‘lied’ when he wrote up a report supporting assault charges against his client.  The video shows Dorm being approached from behind, then smacked in the head with a gun. The video shows the flash from the gun as Dorm was being struck.”

9/11 memorial gets temporary home after judge warns it could be wielded as a weapon

“A 9/11 memorial that was removed from a New Jersey courtroom after a judge warned it could be used as a weapon has a temporary home.  The seven-foot-tall, 275-pound sculpture will be inside the Sussex County Community College’s Center for Performing Arts until Oct. 20.  The tower was removed from the Vernon municipal court in July after a judge warned it could be used as a weapon. The courtroom is also where the town council meets.”
