How A Teacher Made $1 Million Selling Lesson Plans

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/0921_teacher_630x4201.jpg

“Deanna Jump is not a trust fund baby. She never married into money and she has never won the lottery. But in the past year-and-a-half, the 43-year-old kindergarten teacher in Warner Robins, Ga., has earned more than $1 million. Her unlikely strategy: selling catchy kindergarten lesson plans to other teachers.  Jump is just one of some 15,000 teachers currently marketing their original classroom materials through the online marketplace, TeachersPayTeachers (TPT). Since signing on to the site, she has created 93 separate teaching units and sold 161,000 copies for about $8 a pop.”

Ask James: Should I Be Worried About $16 Trillion In Debt?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/oh-so-your-generation-got-us-16-trillion-dollars-in-debt-tell-me-more-about-your-pol1.jpg

“The world has existed for 3 billion years. Debt has never destroyed the world. People came out of the caves. They made tools. Civilizations fell and started and fell and started. In the 1930s we had the dustbowl of the midwest, 22% unemployment, no jobs for anyone, and the rise of the most terrible tyrants in history in Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union (and many would also say the US). And we survived and flourished. The 1950s and 1960s (and the 1980s and 1990s and even the 00s) became the periods of greatest innovation, creativity, and success in every way.”

Could you live in 150 square feet? Cities try out micro-housing

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/0925-Tiny_House_full_3801.jpg

“Despite a soft housing market nationwide, rents in some of America’s biggest cities are still beyond the means of many families and singles who both want and need to live downtown. So cities from San Francisco and Seattle to Chicago and New York have begun trials of ever-smaller efficiency apartments – dubbed micro-housing – in the hearts of their metropolises, proposing units as tiny as 150 square feet with monthly rents as low as $495.  Many other nations have proved that it is entirely possible to live in a more concentrated living environment – one that would be better for the planet, say proponents.”

Study: Public Transit Cannot Succeed Without Punishing Drivers

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/pucherbuehler1.jpg

“The numbers show a consistent trend of Americans shunning the use of mass transit, especially by comparison to their European counterparts.  Even during the recent recession, transit use barely grew. From 2002 to 2009, the share of all trips taken on a bus increased 0.3 percent and rail by 0.1 percent. Public transit has not been popular in the US since the end of World War II.  The study noted German transport systems are far more efficient, with motorists and other taxpayers subsidizing each bus or subway trip by $1.82, compared to the $5.09 per-passenger subsidy in the US. Fares cover just 33 percent of the cost of public transit operations in the US.”

Electric Carmaker Struggles as Its Production Lags

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/REFERTESLAR-articleInline1.jpg

“As Tesla Motors, a maker of electric cars, burns through cash and misses production targets, it is turning to investors and taxpayers for extra financial help.  On Tuesday, Tesla announced plans to sell five million shares to raise cash. The federal government agreed earlier to waive some conditions of a $465 million loan, easing pressure on the company over the next couple of quarters. The moves raised questions about the long-term viability of the company.”

5 Facts Not To Bring Up At Your Local Occupy

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/picture-11-575x3301.png

“I have a soft spot in my heart for the #OCCUPY protests, but I also have a soft spot in my heart for economics. Protesting the military industrial complex and annoying the mayor are worthy endeavors, so I’ve been to #OCCUPY BOSTON a few times and had a blast. But I’ve been careful to avoid stating the following truths.”

Health Premiums Up $3,000 Since Obama Vowed $2,500 Cut

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/A1prem_120925_3452.jpg

“During his first run for president, Barack Obama made one very specific promise to voters: He would cut health insurance premiums for families by $2,500, and do so in his first term.  But it turns out that family premiums have increased by more than $3,000 since Obama’s vow, according to the latest annual Kaiser Family Foundation employee health benefits survey.  What’s more, premiums climbed faster in Obama’s four years than they did in the previous four under President Bush, the survey data show.”

A Lost Decade for Savers

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/0924_savings_630x420.jpg

“Five years into the onset of the financial crisis, with stock and bond markets booming, housing resurgent, and even Detroit redeemed, it’s savers who find themselves in a lost decade.  This runs counter to the lessons of the credit bubble. We were urged to spend less, save more, tell fewer lies on our mortgage applications. Problem is, the jumbo monetary response to that era’s excesses—0 percent interest rates, followed by trillions in quantitative easing and a vow to keep rates this low until at least 2015—is bent on getting people and companies spending and investing (and out of cash) at pretty much any cost.”

A record 1 in 5 U.S. households carry student loan debt

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Student-loan-piggy-bank-Shutterstock1.jpg

“The number of households with student debt is now 19 percent, more than double what it was 20 years ago. The numbers are worse for young people, with 40 percent of households headed by someone under 35 owing on student loans. The reasons for an increased share of households taking on student debt can be chalked up to a number of factors.  First, more students are pursuing higher education than ever before. Between 2000 and 2010, enrollment in higher education increased 37 percent.  Secondly, higher education is getting more and more expensive while federal subsidies for poor students are remaining generally stagnant.”
