Vietnam gold deposit ban approaches

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/image2.jpg

“The deadline when local commercial banks will be prohibited from mobilizing gold deposits is now just a month and a half away, but the question of how the State Bank of Vietnam will deal with the massive amount of public gold reserves after the ban comes into effect remains unanswered. The central bank ruled that the credit institutions would still be able to accept savings in gold bullion until November 25, 2012. The service allows customers to store their gold bullion at banks. Some banks do not charge customers for the service and even pay them dividends at the end of the terms.”

Your right to resell your own stuff is in peril

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/MW-AV010_flea_m_20121003210607_MD1.jpg

“Though Apple Inc. has the copyright on the iPhone and Mark Owen has it on the book ‘No Easy Day,’ you can still sell your copies to whomever you please whenever you want without retribution.  That’s being challenged now for products that are made abroad, and if the Supreme Court upholds an appellate court ruling, it would mean that the copyright holders of anything you own that has been made in China, Japan or Europe, for example, would have to give you permission to sell it.”

Mysterious Algorithm Was 4% of Trading Activity Last Week

“A single mysterious computer program made up 4 percent of all quote traffic in the U.S. stock market last week.  The motive of the algorithm is still unclear. The program placed orders in 25-millisecond bursts involving about 500 stocks, according to Nanex, a market data firm. The algorithm never executed a single trade, and it abruptly ended at about 10:30 a.m. ET Friday.  The ultimate goal of many of these programs is to gum up the system so it slows down the quote feed to others and allows the computer traders (with their co-located servers at the exchanges) to gain a money-making arbitrage opportunity.”

Massachusetts Drug Lab Review Getting Special Court Sessions

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/drugtest2_162.jpg

“Court administrators in Massachusetts are scrambling to set up special court sessions to address the cases of more than a thousand people imprisoned after being convicted of drug crimes based on lab evidence submitted by Annie Dookhan, the now disgraced former state crime lab analyst. Dookhan herself was arrested last Friday for her fraudulent work at the lab, as the scandal continues to reverberate across the state’s criminal justice system.”

High school students suspended for possession of energy mints

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/revive-mints-lg2.jpg

“Jason McMichael, the father of one of the students, told the Journal Star that his 17-year-old son Eric was suspended for two days from Pekin Community High School and not allowed to attend the school’s homecoming festivities after staffers found four students eating energy mint tablets that are marketed like caffeine energy drinks.  Michael’s father said school officials later admitted they did not know if the chewable, unmarked mints were, in fact, illegal drugs but upheld the suspensions anyway, saying the teens displayed ‘gross misconduct for taking an unknown product.'”

Ex-TSA agent: We steal from travelers all the time

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/agent-security-luggage-travelers.n2.jpg

“Almost 400 TSA officers have been fired for stealing from passengers since 2003.  Pythias Brown, a former Transportation Security Administration officer at Newark Liberty International Airport, spent four years stealing everything he could from luggage and security checkpoints, including clothing, laptops, cameras, Nintendo Wiis, video games and cash.  Speaking publicly for the first time after being released after three years in prison, Brown told ABC News that he used the X-ray scanners to locate the most valuable items to snatch.”

Did you call for nuclear genocide against Muslims? Got a lawyer for ya!

“Army Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Dooley, who was in the news a few months back for the controversial things about Islam he was saying in the classroom at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC) in Norfolk, is now upset that all the negative press coverage – surprise! – proved less than career-enhancing for him.  Now he’s lawyering up and talking about suing the Department of Defense, and possibly the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff  (CJCS) himself – stay classy, Dooley – to get his career back on track.”

U.S. officers in Israel for military exercise

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/israelitank-afp1.jpg

“US army officers have begun arriving in Israel ahead of joint military manoeuvres between the countries’ armed forces, an Israeli newspaper said on Sunday.  The officers will supervise the arrival of hundreds of US troops on October 14 for joint manoeuvres that will take place the following week and last for three weeks, according to Yediot Aharonot.  The US-Israeli exercises will be the most important yet between the two countries, the paper said.  Yediot said Israel’s air defences will be tested on this occasion, including its Hetz missile-to-missile batteries and its ‘Iron Dome’ rocket interception system.”

U.S. lets South Korea expand missile range to cover North

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/skoreamissiles-afp1.jpg

“South Korea announced a deal with the United States on Sunday to almost triple the range of its missile systems to cover the whole of North Korea — a move likely to infuriate Pyongyang.  The extension will not only bring the whole of North Korea within reach of Seoul’s rockets, but also parts of China and Japan.  The US stations 28,500 troops in South Korea and guarantees a nuclear ‘umbrella’ in case of any atomic attack.”

The Goldman Sachs-Government Crony Revolving Door Spins

“The Goldman Sachs unit Goldman Sachs Asset Management has hired Andrew ‘Buddy’ Donohue, a former head of the division of investment management at the Securities and Exchange Commission, as deputy general counsel, according to an internal memo obtained by Reuters.   It’s always nice to hire your former regulators.”
