Senate Inquiry Cites Flaws in Homeland Security Fusion Centers

“The dysfunction of the centers could sometimes have bizarre and comic results. Last November, an Illinois center reported that Russian hackers had broken into the computer system of a local water district in Springfield and sent computer commands that triggered a water pump to burn out. But it turned out that a repair technician had remotely accessed the water district’s computer system while he was on vacation in Russia.  In the wake of the January 2011 shootings in Tucson, an Arizona center issued a report filled with inaccurate information about the gunman’s alleged connections to an anti-Semitic and antigovernment group.”

“An initiative aimed at improving intelligence sharing has done little to make the country more secure, despite as much as $1.4 billion in federal spending, according to a two-year examination by Senate investigators.  The nationwide network of offices known as ‘fusion centers’ was launched after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to address concerns that local, state and federal authorities were not sharing information effectively about potential terrorist threats.  But after nine years — and regular praise from Homeland Security officials — the 77 fusion centers have become pools of ineptitude, waste and civil liberties intrusions.”

“Young businesses — rather than small businesses — represent the most reliable, consistent source of job creation, and foreign-born entrepreneurs have long been at the helm of many of those firms.  But increasingly strict immigration laws are making it more difficult for those immigrants to start their enterprises in the U.S., prompting a ‘reverse brain drain,’ according to the researchers. Of particular concern is the growing number of foreign-born students who earn advanced degrees at U.S. universities but after graduating are forced to return home, where some create firms that compete against American companies.”

Hungary Now Imposes Tax On Non-Resident Citizens

“With governments in almost every country desperately seeking new revenues, it was only a matter of time before they begin imitating the U.S. example.  Until earlier this year, Hungarian tax authorities made no serious effort to collect tax from citizens living in other countries. That changed with the Hungarian tax administration began sending reminders to its citizens notifying them of this obligation.  Unlike the United States, Hungary doesn’t reserve the right to tax Hungarian citizens who live in a country that has signed a tax treaty with Hungary.”

57 Previously Undiscovered Fast and Furious Guns Used in Mexican Crimes

“Fifty seven previously unidentified firearms linked to Operation Fast and Furious were recovered in sites associated with murders, kidnappings, and at least two gruesome massacres.  Univision News obtained the list of Fast and Furious weapons and a list containing almost 60,000 recovered firearms compiled by Mexico’s Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA). A cross-reference of the serial numbers of the guns resulted in 96 full matches (several partial matches were discarded). The 96 firearms linked to Operation Fast and Furious all turned up at crime scenes in Mexico from 2009 to 2010.”
