At White House Request, Lockheed Martin Drops Plan to Issue Layoff Notices

“Defense contractor Lockheed Martin heeded a request from the White House today — one with political overtones — and announced it will not issue layoff notices to thousands of employees just days before the November presidential election.  Lockheed, one of the biggest employers in the key battleground state of Virginia, previously warned it would have to issue notices to employees, required by law, due to looming defense cuts set to begin to take effect after Jan. 2 because of the failure of the  Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction which was created to find a way to cut $1.5 trillion from the federal deficit over the next decade.”

Riklon, now a senator in the Marshall Islands Nitijela representing Kwajalein, was a two-year-old on Rongelap when the Bravo hydrogen bomb was exploded at Bikini on March 1, 1954, dumping high-level radioactive fallout onto Rongelap and other downwind islands.”

Court won’t hear appeal over TSA scanners

“The high court on Monday refused to hear an appeal by Jonathan Corbett, who wanted to challenge the Transportation Security Administration’s use of full-body scanners and/or enhanced pat downs at airport security lines. Federal courts in Florida refused to hear his lawsuit, saying it could only be filed with the federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta upheld the dismissal, and the Supreme Court refused to reopen the case.”

But the amount of money spent on the first family, he argues, has risen tremendously under the Obama administration and needs to be reined in.”

“Dr. Shakir Hamoodi is an Iraqi-American nuclear engineer who just began a three-year prison sentence at the Fort Leavenworth, Kansas penitentiary for the ‘crime’ of sending sustenance money to his impoverished, sick, and suffering relatives in Iraq – including his blind mother – during the years when US sanctions (which is what caused his family’s suffering) barred the sending of any money to Iraq. The travesty of this case – and the havoc it has wreaked on the entire family – is repellent and genuinely infuriating. But it is sadly common in post-9/11 America, especially for American Muslim communities.”

Google blocks video after losing Brazil court battle

“Google has blocked a YouTube video that allegedly slanders a mayoral candidate in Brazil after losing a court battle that saw its local head of operations, Fabio Coelho, briefly arrested.  The Internet search giant confirmed late Thursday that it had restricted access to the video the court had deemed slanderous against Alcides Bernal, a candidate for mayor of Campo Grande, in the Mato Grosso do Sul state.  Coelho was released after he agreed to appear in court, where he faces allegations of ‘disobedience’ that carry a maximum penalty of a year in prison.”
