It is therefore of particular note that it is financed in part by the royal family of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates.  The UAE as a major OPEC oil producer sees fracking as a major source of oil production competition.”

Wall Street Journal accused of concealing writers’ Mitt Romney links

“The Wall Street Journal has been criticised by senior US journalists for failing to disclose that 10 of its op-ed writers are Mitt Romney advisers.  According to an inquiry by Media Matters, 23 pieces in the WSJ’s op-ed pages attacked President Obama or praised Romney without the writers acknowledging their political connections to Romney.  The 10 WSJ writers with strong Romney links were John Bolton; Max Boot; Lee Casey; Paula Dobriansky; Mary Ann Glendon; Glenn Hubbard; Paul Peterson; David Rivkin Jr; Martin West; and Michael Mukasey.  The Wall Street Journal is owned by Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corporation.”

Philips pulls presidential debate sponsorship

“Philips Electronics has dropped its sponsorship of the 2012 presidential debates, citing a desire not to associate itself with ‘partisan politics.’  Philips is the third and by far the largest of the original ten sponsors to pull its support, following similar decisions by British advertising firm BBH New York and the YWCA over the last week. Their decision to do so is seen as the result of intense lobbying efforts by advocacy organizations — primarily Libertarian supporters of former Gov. Gary Johnson — who oppose the exclusion of third-party candidates and who therefore believe the Commission on Presidential Debates is an anti-Democratic institution.”

“The Pueblo Chieftain has excluded independent candidate Tisha Casida from a Chieftain-sponsored debate Oct. 10 featuring 3rd congressional district candidates Scott Tipton, a Republican, and Democrat Sal Pace.  ‘Voters want to hear from the candidates who do have a chance,’ the Chieftain’s Managing Editor Steve Henson wrote in an email to Casida.”

Lee says he would like ‘to see 10 of the major TV shows, or telenovelas, have people talking about ‘that health insurance thing.” As a result, the exchange will pay Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide to convince shows like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Modern Family’ to work Obamacare into their scripts. Of the hundreds of millions the exchange has on hand to accomplish this, $237 million came directly from the federal government.”

“A US air force systems analyst who expressed support for WikiLeaks and accused leaker Bradley Manning triggered a formal military investigation last year to determine whether she herself had leaked any documents to the group. Air Force investigative documents, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, show that the analyst was repeatedly interviewed about her contacts with and support for WikiLeaks – what investigators repeatedly refer to as the ‘anti-US or anti-military group’ – as well as her support for the group’s founder, Julian Assange.”

Polish opposition draws thousands for anti-government rally

“Tens of thousands of opponents of Poland’s centrist government massed in the capital Saturday for a protest called by trade unions, an ultra-Catholic movement and politicians.  Organisers put the turnout at 100,000, while Polish media estimated the number at 40,000.  Marchers from Solidarity — the iconic union which helped bring down Poland’s communist regime in the 1980s and now has close ties to Law and Justice — turned out to oppose to the government’s decision to raise the retirement age to 67.  Poland is the only member of the European Union to have remained in growth since the global economic crisis struck in 2008.”
