Greeks commemorate 1970s student uprising crushed by US-backed military junta

“Thousands of Greeks marched behind a blood-stained national flag on Saturday to commemorate the violent suppression of a 1973 student uprising against a US-backed military junta. The bloodied flag that flew over the Athens Polytechnic on the night of November 17, 1973 — seen as a key moment in the restoration of democracy to Greece — was carried as usual at the head of the annual demonstration in memory of those who died. Police said about 20,000 people marched in total in the capital. Outside the U.S. embassy, some of the protesters set fire to an American flag.”

Youth unemployment much higher. France can still borrow cheaply, but it’s also resting on past laurels (it’s still a gigantic tourist destination). New President Francois Hollande is ostensibly powerful, but his approval rating has plunged.”

“If there was a prize for fighting back against tax authorities, the Italians would probably deserve first place. I’m not aware of any other country where tax offices get firebombed. The Italians also believe in passive forms of resistance, with tens of thousands of boat owners sailing away to protect themselves from the government. But the Spanish are beginning to get into the swing of things, perhaps because they are increasingly upset by the plethora of tax hikes imposed by the supposedly right-of-center government in Madrid.”

“California Governor Jerry Brown hailed his signature tax-hike to fund education—known as Proposition 30—as a towering achievement that will ensure educational excellence in higher education and spare those trapped in poor and failing K-12 California public schools from budget cuts. But a new study by five UC Berkeley doctoral students says that millions of dollars of the freshly raised revenues won’t go to California’s school children. An increasing number of posts in top UC management and on the Board of Regents have been filled by former Wall Street bankers.”

“The feds have been arresting peaceful medical marijuana users and raiding dispensaries that state and local governments have sanctioned. It remains to be seen what will happen in states that are refusing to comply with deeply unpopular mandates of Obamacare by not setting up healthcare exchanges. In a free country governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed. When the people have very clearly withdrawn their consent for a law, the discussion should be over. If the feds refuse to accept that and continue to run roughshod over the people, at what point do we acknowledge that that is not freedom anymore?”

Sheriff Arpaio Will Arm Deputies With Automatic Weapons To Prevent ‘Illegals’ From Escaping

“Arpaio’s boast of expending vast county police resources to chase down individuals in the desert is misplaced at best. While Arpaio continues to ‘make every effort’ to snag these individuals through violent means, less local police resources are available for addressing violent and property crimes. Instead, he is increasing the risk of violence going forward by pledging to arm all of his deputies with automatic weapons. What’s more, Arpaio’s aggressive efforts put him and his department at risk of becoming the target of yet another lawsuit.”

Wisconsin asks hunters to watch for marijuana fields

“Marijuana growing operations in Wisconsin, watch out: the U.S. Forest Service has instructed hunters to look out for fields in the state’s Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. In August, one fisherman in the state came upon a 8,000-plant growing operation worth $8 million. One Justice Department director explained that growers, rather than creating one large field of marijuana plants, now plant a larger number of smaller fields to thwart aerial detection. Police interviews with those who have been apprehended on growing operations revealed that most were undocumented immigrants.”

Better deterrents put Somali pirates’ business under strain

“Soaring insurance premiums and the threat to crews have forced shipowners to change their ways. Ships have been made harder to attack by a range of measures known as BMP, or best management practice. They cruise faster and practise evasive manoeuvres. More than a quarter of vessels now carry armed security guards. The shipping industry used to oppose this, fearing that armed guards would escalate violence. But not a single vessel with guards has been boarded. Usually a warning shot is enough to deter the pirates. Lieut-Commander Sherrif says: ‘The pirates go to sea to make money, not die in a firefight.'”

Mexico’s Zetas drug cartel strikes gold in the coal business

“Mexican druglords have found an earthy new source of wealth: dirty old coal. They are mining it themselves in a coal-rich area along the US border or buying it from small mine operators, then reselling it to a state-owned company at fabulous margins that can see them make a profit 30 times greater than their initial investment. Reforma newspaper says the Zetas produce or buy 10,000 tonnes of coal a week. Selling it at their inflated prices, that means yearly revenue of $22 million to $25 million.”

Alberta Energy Minister Ken Hughes says province looking to tap U.S. military personnel to help develop oilsands

“Hughes said there are a half-million unemployed or underemployed younger military veterans in the U.S. Forecasts conducted on the labour needs of Alberta’s energy sector range greatly, with one study stating the province could be short 130,000 workers within seven years. Concerns over the welfare of U.S. military personnel returning from overseas — particularly the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — have been growing in the U.S. Among the challenges they face are homelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder and unemployment in a country still struggling with an unemployment rate of around 8%.”
