Number Of Nation’s Sheriffs Refusing To Enforce Unconstitutional Gun Laws Snowballs

“In New Mexico, 30 of the state’s 33 county sheriffs have reminded state lawmakers that they are under oath to support the U.S. Constitution, and that includes the Second Amendment.  CNSNews.com previously reported that 28 of the 29 sheriff’s in Utah sent a letter to President Obama stating that they will not enforce any new gun laws they believe to be unconstitutional.  A host of Oregon sheriffs have said that they will not comply with any new unconstitutional gun regulations.  For a list of more sheriffs who are standing up against new gun regulations, please click here.”

Authoritarian regimes use Silicon Valley software to censor Internet

“Authoritarian regimes around the world are using technology from a Silicon Valley firm for Internet surveillance, filtering and censorship, according to a report by Canadian researchers.  The report this week from the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab said devices from California-based security firm Blue Coat Systems were being used in China, Russia, Venezuela and other countries with ‘a history of concerns over human rights.'”

Whole Foods CEO: Obamacare-Fascism Comparison Won’t Hurt Profits

“The CEO earlier this week criticized President Barack Obama’s health care reform law, saying ‘it’s more like fascism,’ and that the government controls ‘the means of production’ in health care.  Mackey later said in a segment on HuffPost Live on Thursday that he regretted comparing Obamacare to ‘fascism,’ despite remaining skeptical of Obama’s plan.  ‘I regret using that word now because it’s got so much baggage attached to it,’ Mackey said. ‘Of course, I was just using the standard dictionary definition.'”

Electricity prices for German households have increased 61% since 2000 – renewables blamed

“Real German electricity prices for households have increased 61% since 2000. One quarter of household costs now stems directly from renewable energy. Also, the increase is *not* because of increasing production costs (which have actually slightly declined since 1978).  The increase is due to dramatically increasing taxes, most noticeably from the Renewable Energy Act (EEG). In 2013 the EEG will increase 50% to 6.28 euro-cent (5.28 cents plus 19% VAT).  In June 2011, Chancellor Angela Merkel famously promised to keep EEG prices stable, but this promise has now clearly been broken. The German household will pay 24% of its electricity bill to renewables.”

Tree Theft on the Rise in Germany as Heating Costs Increase

“The problem has been compounded this winter by rising energy costs. The Germany’s Renters Association estimates the heating costs will go up 22 percent this winter alone. A side effect is an increasing number of people turning to wood-burning stoves for warmth. Germans bought 400,000 such stoves in 2011, the German magazine FOCUS reported this week. It marks the continuation of a trend: The number of Germans buying heating devices that burn wood and coal has grown steadily since 2005, according to consumer research company GfK Group.  That increase in demand has now also boosted prices for wood, leading many to fuel their fires with theft.”

Government Crony Madness In Action (Wind Farm Edition)

“Wind farms in the Pacific Northwest — built with government subsidies– are now getting paid to shut down as the federal agency charged with managing the region’s electricity grid says there’s an oversupply of renewable power at certain times of the year. Note the part of the explanation in the clip below where it is stated that the problem is too much energy being generated because of melting snow. Econ 101 teaches that there is no such thing as oversupply, i.e. ‘too much’ supply. Over supply can only occur when there are price controls in existence, above market prices. So what is really going on here?”

Secret backdoors found in firewall, VPN gear from Barracuda Networks

“A variety of firewall, VPN, and spam filtering gear sold by Barracuda Networks contains undocumented backdoor accounts that allow people to remotely log in and access sensitive information, researchers with an Austrian security firm have warned.  The SSH, or secure shell, backdoor is hardcoded into ‘multiple Barracuda Networks products’ and can be used to gain shell access to vulnerable appliances, according to an advisory published Thursday by SEC Consult Vulnerability Lab.  A timestamp and version relevant for the code that enables the backdoor bears a date from 2003, suggesting it may have existed in the Barracuda appliances for a decade.”

Google stands up for Gmail users, requires cops to get a warrant

“American government agencies (including federal, state, and local authorities) made over 8,400 requests for nearly 15,000 accounts—far exceeding India, the next largest country in terms of information requests. It’s unclear how many of the subpoenas or warrants Google complied with—the company has only said it complied in part or in full to 88 percent of total requests from American authorities.  While relatively few tech companies publicly disclose how many government requests they get, Google appears to be one of the few e-mail providers that is challenging law enforcement agencies to produce a warrant to access users’ e-mail.”
