‘Anything That Moves’: Civilians And The Vietnam War

“On March 16, 1968, between 347 and 504 unarmed Vietnamese civilians were gunned down by members of the U.S. Army in what became known as the My Lai Massacre.  The U.S. government has maintained that atrocities like this were isolated incidents in the conflict. Nick Turse says otherwise. In his new book, Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam, Turse argues that the intentional killing of civilians was quite common in a war that claimed 2 million civilian lives, with 5.3 million civilians wounded and 11 million refugees.”

No-fly zone at Obama family Colorado ski outing

“First Lady Michelle Obama and her two daughters skied at a posh resort in Aspen, Colo., with the help of numerous instructors on private ski runs during Presidents Day weekend.  We’re told some wealthy Aspen visitors were annoyed when ‘air space was blocked because of [the Obamas’] plane, so others couldn’t get their private jets in. Many people nearly didn’t land or had to be diverted.’ We’re told the Obama family stayed at the home of Aspen Ski Company owners Jim and Paula Crown, who are big Democratic donors. Their security team occupied another entire house next door.”

Federal Court Says Obama NLRB Appointments Violated Constitution

“President Barack Obama violated the Constitution when he bypassed the Senate last year to appoint three members of the National Labor Relations Board, a federal appeals court ruled Friday in a far-reaching decision that could severely limit a chief executive’s powers to make recess appointments. The decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit marked a victory for Republicans and business groups critical of the labor board. If it stands, it could invalidate hundreds of board decisions over the past year, including some that make it easier for unions to organize.”

Ohio Court Upholds Police Entry Into Home Over Failure To Signal Turn

“The Ohio Court of Appeals on Friday upheld the police use of a battering ram on the home of a suspect who failed to properly signal a turn. On December 12, 2011, Dayton Police Officers Michael Saylors and Randy Beane saw the gold Oldsmobile Intrigue belonging to Jeffrey Lam near the intersection of Hodapp and Lorain Avenues. While the officers were following Lam to his home at 645 Creighton Avenue, they noted he allegedly failed to use his turn signal. Lam ran out of his car into his home and locked the door. After failing to kick in the door, the officers used a battering ram and knocked it down. In the course of a search of the house for ‘officer safety,’ drugs were found.”

Cops Nab 5-Year-Old for Wearing Wrong Color Shoes to School

“In Mississippi, if kindergarteners violates the dress code or act out in class, they may end up in the back of a police car.  A story about one five-year-old particularly stands out. The little boy was required to wear black shoes to school. Because he didn’t have black shoes, his mom used a marker to cover up his white and red sneakers. A bit of red and white were still noticeable, so the child was taken home by the cops. The child was escorted out of school so he and his mother would be taught a lesson. Ridiculous? Perhaps. But incidents such as this are happening across Mississippi.”

Man With Down Syndrome Killed By Police Over $11 Movie Ticket

“A 26-year-old man with Down Syndrome was killed in police custody after refusing to leave a movie theater or buy another $11 movie ticket.  A medical examiner in Baltimore ruled that the man, Robert Ethan Saylor, died of asphyxia while in police custody. The death has been ruled a homicide.  On January 12, the man with Down Syndrome was forcibly removed from the Regal Cinemas Westview Stadium 16 after he refused to either leave the theater after a movie ended or buy another ticket. He was handcuffed and then suffered what the sheriff’s office referred to as a ‘medical emergency.'”

Yes, You Are A Criminal… You Just Don’t Know It Yet

“How many felonies have you committed today? If you’re like most Americans, you probably violate federal or state law several times each day, without even knowing it.  Anyone can inadvertently run afoul of America’s metastasizing network of criminal laws. Spilling a drink in a nightclub is hardly what anyone would consider a criminal offense. Neither is purchasing medication over-the-counter.  Once you have a criminal record, especially a felony conviction, you’ll find it much more difficult to live outside the United States, or to acquire a second citizenship and passport.”

10 Reasons The U.S. Is No Longer The Land Of The Free

“Even as we pass judgment on countries we consider unfree, Americans remain confident that any definition of a free nation must include their own — the land of free. Yet, the laws and practices of the land should shake that confidence. In the decade since Sept. 11, 2001, this country has comprehensively reduced civil liberties in the name of an expanded security state. While each new national security power Washington has embraced was controversial when enacted, they are often discussed in isolation. But they don’t operate in isolation. They form a mosaic of powers under which our country could be considered, at least in part, authoritarian.”

New police advice to schools: Confront shooter (unarmed)

“Law enforcement authorities are increasingly advising school officials – and even young students – to physically confront suspects in future campus attacks as a final line of defense.  The advisories, now included in training videos and documents prepared by police, represent a major shift in tactics for law enforcement officials who have traditionally counseled potential victims to flee and hide while waiting for authorities to answer calls for help.”

Colorado manufacturer threatens to leave state if gun bill passes

“A package of gun control measures that won initial approval in Colorado’s Democratic-controlled House Friday night could result in several hundred jobs lost at the state’s largest manufacturer of high-capacity ammunition magazines.  Erie-based Magpul Industries, which employs some 200 people directly and supports about 400 jobs through subcontractors, has threatened to leave the state if lawmakers are successful in passing the sweeping gun-control package, which limits the number of rounds a magazine can hold, according to The Denver Post.”
