Zurich Mayor Renounces U.S. Citizenship Amid Tighter Tax Rules

“Corine Mauch, 52, a member of the Socialist Party born in Iowa City, Iowa, returned her passport to the U.S. Embassy as she regards Switzerland as her home and doesn’t want to deal with IRS paperwork. ‘My relationship with the U.S. is limited to my very early youth,’ said Mauch, who retains Swiss citizenship. ‘Neither the double taxation or any new directives on the taxation of U.S. citizens outside the U.S. have affected this decision. But I won’t miss the U.S. tax bureaucracy either.’ The U.S. is the only nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that taxes citizens wherever they reside, including an estimated six million expatriates.”

Tina Turner claims Swiss citizenship

“Tina Turner, the US-born singer famed for hits such as ‘Private Dancer’ and ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’, has become a Swiss citizen, the Swiss newspaper Blick reported.  The 73-year-old retired entertainer, who has lived in Switzerland for nearly two decades, received her red Swiss passport with its distinctive white cross on it on Monday, the publication said.  Swiss media reported in January that Turner was to hand in her US passport when she got her Swiss one. She was quoted as saying that ‘I cannot imagine a better place to live’ than in the European Alpine state, where privacy laws are strictly enforced.”

White House: Internet sales tax ‘will level the playing field’

“‘We believe that the Marketplace Fairness Act will level the playing field for local small-business retailers, who are undercut every day by out-of-state online companies,’ said White House spokesman Jay Carney. The Act would require Internet and remote retailers to collect state sales taxes no matter where they are located when a transaction takes place, and advocates hope it would ease budget problems in many cash-strapped states.  Opponents of the Act say it would still be unfair because retailers in a state which has no sales tax would still be liable to collect tax on purchases made in distant states which do have sales taxes.”

Never throw away your tax returns

“David started working in his teens. Surely, he has 40 credits (or 10 years) in the system? Yes, he does. But having gotten rid of his older tax returns, he can no longer prove it. David asked the IRS for copies of certain missing years, dating back to about 20 years ago. Not only did the IRS not have copies, but they didn’t even have electronic transcripts going that far back.  What can David do? Not a thing. He accepted this philosophically, knowing he must work two more years to build up his benefits.  How can you avoid this problem? It’s easy. Never, ever throw out a tax return.”

Bulletproof whiteboards installed in Minnesota school district

“A Minnesota school district where two students were killed in a 2003 shooting unveiled a new device Tuesday aimed at adding a last-ditch layer of safety for teachers and students: bulletproof whiteboards.  The Rocori School District has acquired nearly 200 of the whiteboards, made of a material touted by its manufacturer as stronger than that in police-issue bulletproof vests. The 18-by-20-inch whiteboards can be used by teachers for instruction and used as a shield in an emergency.  Police Chief Phil Jones demonstrated the whiteboards Tuesday in a school gym by leveling a karate kick at one, whacking it with a police baton and stabbing it with a knife.”

Florida pot grower busted for manufacturing ‘high-end assault rifles’

“Police in Port St. Lucie, Florida announced on Wednesday that they had arrested a couple on charges related to a ‘weapons manufacturing warehouse’ and a marijuana growing operations, according to TCPalm. WPTV reported that a traffic stop made by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office earlier in the week led to a marijuana grow house, which then led to a warehouse facility where ‘high-end’ weapons were being manufactured.  At a warehouse on Northwest Settle Avenue, investigators found about 150 marijuana plants and ten guns, including an AK-47 military-style assault rifle.”

U.S. Government Preparing for Major Terrorism Exercises In Three Cities [2004]

“Beginning sometime between May 7 and May 29, local, state and top level federal authorities will respond to simulated weapons of mass destruction attacks in three cities — Denver, Portsmouth, N.H., and the Washington, D.C.-area.  Volunteers and professional actors will play the roles of victims, who will be rescued, diagnosed, decontaminated and treated over the 10-day period. A ‘virtual news network’ will be created that will broadcast on the exercises every hour on the hour.  This marks the first time that an exercise of this scope, with the participation of top-level federal, state and local officials, has ever been conducted.”

Government Agencies Failed, so We Must Give Them Even More Authority

thelrcblog-5002

“‘Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States. … An estimated 854,000 people, nearly 1.5 times as many people as live in Washington, D.C., hold top-secret security clearances.’  Americans have spent trillions of dollars in the name of ‘fighting terrorism,’ yet we are told that truly all of the king’s horses and all of the king’s men could not stop a couple of young men from exploding bombs at a major American sporting event.  What is Thomas’s response? The American State obviously needs more power and more authority.”

‘Boston Strong’: Marching in Lockstep with the Police State

AD_Bill-of-Rights1

“Tsarnaev’s case may prove to be the game-changer. Yet as journalist Emily Bazelon points out for Slate: ‘Why should I care that no one’s reading Dzhokhar Tsarnaev his Miranda rights? When the law gets bent out of shape for him, it’s easier to bend out of shape for the rest of us.’   This continual undermining of the rules that protect civil liberties, not to mention the incessant rush to judgment by politicians, members of the media and the public, will inevitably have far-reaching consequences on a populace that not only remains ignorant about their rights but is inclined to sacrifice their liberties for phantom promises of safety.”

American Eagle Gold Bullion Coin Sales Suspended; U.S. Inventory Depleted

EPJ13

“The U.S. Mint said it has suspended sales of its one-tenth ounce American Eagle gold bullion coins as surging demand after bullion’s plunge to two-year lows depleted the government’s inventory. Bottom line: The selling in gold that has occurred isn’t coming from the general public.  So far in April, the U.S. Mint has sold 175,000 ounces of American Eagle gold coins, putting it on track to challenge a high of 231,500 ounces set in December 2009.  The buying by individuals in the wake of the curious decline seems to be global.”
