Sapulpa man, cleared by DNA evidence, plans to sue for wrongful arrest

“A Sapulpa man who was held in jail for 84 days before DNA evidence cleared him in the brutal rape of his then-girlfriend’s 4-year-old daughter plans to sue the Creek County Sheriff’s Office for wrongful arrest.  Tommy Braden’s attorney, Don Smolen, of Tulsa, sent notice earlier this month that they plan to take legal action for wrongful arrest and detention, which they allege was the result of the Sheriff’s Office negligence.  ‘From day one he’s begging them to do a DNA test,’ Smolen said. ‘They said they weren’t going to do that because it was a waste of taxpayers’ dollars.’  Braden was released when a judge approved a DNA test which cleared him on July 3.”

Judge Sentenced to 28 Years in Prison for “Selling” Kids to Private Prisons

“Accused of perpetrating a ‘profound evil,’ former Pennsylvania judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for illegally accepting money from a juvenile-prison developer while he spent years incarcerating thousands of young people.  Prosecutors said Ciavarella sent juveniles to jail as part of a ‘kids for cash’ scheme involving Robert Mericle, builder of the PA and Western PA Child Care juvenile detention centers. The ex-judge was convicted in February of 12 counts that included racketeering, money laundering, mail fraud and tax evasion.  In addition to his prison sentence, Ciavarella was ordered to pay nearly $1.2 million in restitution.”

Cops Barge Into Home, Take Baby After Parents Seek 2nd Medical Opinion

“The next day police showed up at the Nikolayev’s home with representatives from Child Protective Services (CPS).  Alex went outside to meet them, where he says he was ‘pushed against the building.’  When he asked if he was being placed under arrest, he said they ‘smacked me down onto the ground [and] yelled out, ‘I think I got the keys to the house.’’ Seeing the scene outside, Anna set up a camera in front of her door.  Video shows police letting themselves in without a warrant, and taking the baby. ‘I’m going to grab your baby, and don’t resist, and don’t fight me okay?’ one officer can be heard telling the mother in the video.”

U.S. Government Forbids Ammo-Making Equipment from China

“I just spoke to a good entrepreneurial friend. When he read about the ammo shortage he saw a business opportunity. He began researching what is involved in opening and operating ammo manufacturing. He found out that since he is not a felon he just needs a $30 license from the ATF. He contacted that department. He has waited over 2 weeks with no reply. In the meantime he found the manufacturing equipment in China. He contacted them. He heard back through their broker and was informed that just 3 days before, our government made it illegal to export that equipment to US citizens. I’ve not read anything about this in any news source.”

GAO Now Investigating DHS Ammo Purchases

“The Government Accountability Office tells Whispers it is now investigating large ammunition purchases made by the Department of Homeland Security. Chuck Young, a spokesman for GAO, says the investigation of the purchases is ‘just getting underway.’  The congressional investigative agency is jumping into the fray just as legislation was introduced in both the Senate and the House to restrict the purchase of ammo by some government agencies (except the Department of Defense). The AMMO Act, introduced Friday, would prevent agencies from buying more ammunition if ‘stockpiles’ are greater than what they were in previous administrations.”

Ron Paul: Liberty Was Also Attacked in Boston

Ron-Paul2

“The Boston bombing provided the opportunity for the government to turn what should have been a police investigation into a military-style occupation of an American city. This unprecedented move should frighten us as much or more than the attack itself.  What has been sadly forgotten in all the celebration of the capture of one suspect and the killing of his older brother is that the police state tactics in Boston did absolutely nothing to catch them.  Actually, it very nearly gave the suspect a chance to make a getaway.”

Rand Paul stirs business ire over blocking of U.S. tax treaties

“Citing privacy concerns about Americans’ tax data, Paul, a Republican and libertarian, has single-handedly blocked Senate action on treaties with Hungary, Switzerland and Luxembourg that have been signed by authorities on both sides, but have been awaiting Senate review since 2011.  Major U.S. businesses such as IBM Corp and Fluor Corp are lobbying for Senate action on tax treaties, according to Senate lobbying disclosure documents.  The U.S. Treasury in 2012 began signing new tax pacts with countries as part of implementation of the U.S. Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, a 2010 anti-tax-evasion law.”

Canada to tax Bitcoin transactions

“Canadians using bitcoins, the decentralized crypto-currency that recently went mainstream, must report their incomes and pay taxes as with other earnings, Canada’s Revenue Agency (CRA) confirmed following a media request.  The issue was clarified in response to a letter by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) ahead of the country’s tax season.  Two separate tax rules are applicable to the electronic currency.  When bitcoins are used as money to buy goods and services, the transaction is treated as barter and is taxable as such. When they are traded at a market for profit, they may be taxed as capital gains.”

Spy, or pay up: FBI-backed bill would fine US firms for refusing wiretaps

“A US government task force is drafting FBI-backed legislation that would penalize companies like Google and Facebook for refusing to comply with wiretap orders, media report.  In the new legislation being drafted by US law enforcement officials, refusal to cooperate with the FBI could cost a tech company tens of thousands of dollars in fines, the Washington Post quoted anonymous sources as saying. The fined company would be given 90 days to comply with wiretap orders. If the organization is unable or unwilling to turn over the communications requested by the wiretap, the penalty sum would double every day.”

Feats of Bridge-Building Bravura

“Mr. Johnson saw a way to keep traffic flowing for all but 10 days of the three-year project, helping shave $28 million from its estimated cost. As the new bridge is constructed on temporary piers, cars whiz past it a scant 55 feet upstream on the old bridge. When work on the new bridge is finished, traffic will be briefly rerouted onto it, so the old one can be demolished. In the grand finale this July, the new 15,260-ton steel bridge, pulled by powerful strand jacks, will slide slowly upstream on steel beams lubricated with high-grade silicon grease, before finally coming to rest in the footprint of the original bridge.”
