Destroying the middle ground

portrait1

“Imagine yourself in an alternate United States where the First Amendment is not as a matter of settled law considered to bar Federal and State governments from almost all interference in free speech. In this alternate America, there are many and bitter arguments about the extent of free-speech rights. The ground of dispute is to what extent the instruments of political and cultural speech (printing presses, radios, telephones, copying machines, computers) should be regulated by government so that use of these instruments does not promote violence, assist criminal enterprises, and disrupt public order.”

The Google Executive Chairman on Private Drones vs. Government Armed Drones

EPJ13

“‘You’re having a dispute with your neighbor. How would you feel if your neighbor went over and bought a commercial observation drone that they can launch from their backyard. It just flies over your house all day. How would you feel about it?’ Schmidt went on to bring up military and terrorist concerns. ‘I’m not going to pass judgment on whether armies should exist, but I would prefer to not spread and democratize the ability to fight war to every single human being. It’s got to be regulated… It’s one thing for governments, who have some legitimacy in what they’re doing, but have other people doing it… it’s not going to happen.'”

Maryland ‘rain tax’ to be enforced through satellite surveillance?

“The tax, officially known as a ‘storm water management fee,’ will be enforced in nine of the state’s counties. Former 2012 GOP U.S. Senate candidate Dan Bongino bashes the tax in a Wednesday afternoon press release. The law ‘requires individuals, businesses, and even charitable organizations and houses of worship to pay a tax based on the amount of rain that falls on their property and the ‘impervious surfaces’ on their land,’ he says.  The tax, mandated by the EPA and enforced locally, will be calculated ‘through satellite surveillance of your property,’ the statement claims.”

JFK passenger detained by TSA after talking about ‘bomb’ sandwich

“Airport officials detained a traveler who mentioned an explosive device at JFK — only to discover he was actually talking about food referred to as The Bomb, TSA sources said.  Jason Michael Cruz, 29, was on an escalator in Terminal 7 Thursday when a TSA officer overheard him tell a friend he ‘had the wrong kind of bomb’ just after 1 p.m. Officials ushered Cruz and his friend, Matthew Okumoto, to a holding area, where they learned the pair was talking about a sandwich called The Bomb, airport officials said.  TSA officers held the pair until airport cops arrived, causing Cruz to miss his Los Angeles-bound flight.”

Colorado Sheriffs Suing Their Own State Over New Gun Laws

“Exposing the disconnect between Colorado politicians and the law enforcement officers charged with upholding the law, more than half of the sheriffs in the state are planning to file a lawsuit against recent gun control laws passed by Democrats.  While politicians may pass the laws, law-enforcement officials are the ones who have to deal with the real-world implications of putting the new laws into effect. Because of this, 37 of the state’s 62 sheriffs have announced their plans to file a lawsuit against the new laws, saying they are unconstitutional and unenforceable.”

Puppies & Kittens & Censors…Oh my! Government Muzzles Internet Pet Veterinarian

“Can the government silence and shut down licensed professionals for giving advice online?  Dr. Ron Hines is a highly regarded licensed veterinarian who’s never had any complaints against him. Being a disabled and retired senior citizen, the Internet allows him to remain productive in his golden years. Yet he’s been fined and shut down for giving advice on the Internet, often for free, to people around the planet who have no other access to veterinary care for their animals.”

Arizona House Panel Says Cops Can Destroy Marijuana, Even If Patients Had Right To It

“An Arizona House panel voted on Tuesday to let police destroy marijuana they have seized, even if it was seized from legal medical marijuana patients who had a right to possess it.  The panel ignored the pleas of Arizona’s former top federal prosecutor, who told members of the Judiciary Committee that SB 1441 — supposedly meant to ‘tighten up’ the state’s medical marijuana law — is an improer end-run around the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act, approved by voters in 2010, reports Howard Fischer at Capitol Media Services.”

‘Respect State Marijuana Laws Act’ Introduced In Congress

“United States Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), along with a bipartisan coalition of three Republicans (Reps. Rohrabacher, Rep. Justin Amash [R-MI], and Don Young [R-AK]) and three Democrats (Reps. Earl Blumenauer [D-OR], Steve Cohen [D-TN] and Jared Polis [D-CO]) today introduced House Bill 1523: the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act.  The measure would amend the federal Controlled Substances Act to exempt from federal prosecution individuals and businesses, including marijuana dispensaries and/or retail outlets, who comply with state marijuana laws.”
