New York auction houses celebrate after billion-dollar sales week

“Two of New York’s leading auction houses combined for the art world’s richest sales week ever, with works going under the hammer for a breathtaking total of more than one billion dollars. Christie’s reaped in more than $638 million dollars at its blockbuster contemporary art auction on Wednesday. Its staggering haul included a record $58.4 million for a Jackson Pollock drip painting, which shattered all previous records for the highest price for any work at an art auction. An official at Christie’s said the record prices ‘reflect a new era in the art market, wherein seasoned collectors and new bidders compete at the highest level within a global market.'”

Suddenly, Banks Are Victims In Justice Department’s S&P Lawsuit

“Justice is not suing Warren Buffett’s Moody’s ratings service, even though Moody’s rated many of these same deals, often with identical ratings. Are we supposed to believe that Moody’s never suggested to anyone that it was independent and objective? Whether Team Obama would ever dare to sue a company in which St. Warren is invested, you don’t have to be a cynic to wonder if the feds will first wait and see whether Moody’s downgrades U.S. Treasury debt the way S&P did in 2011. The truth is that the damage occurred because the same government that’s now suing S&P required financial institutions to use the ratings issued by S&P and the other raters.”

For those of you who haven’t yet decided to go to college, it may make sense to take James Altucher’s advice, skip college and just travel.  Altucher’s advice sure worked for David Karp. Forget skipping college, Karp dropped out of high school. At 17, Karp dropped out of Bronx High School of Science and decided to live in Japan. He eventually headed back to the US, founded Tumblr and just sold it to Yahoo for $1.1 billion.”

Japan rejecting Osaka mayor’s view that ‘Comfort Women’ were ‘necessary’

“A large majority of Japanese people disagree with a high-profile politician who said women forced to provide sex during World War II were a military necessity, polls issued on Monday said. Up to 200,000 ‘comfort women’ from Korea, China, the Philippines and elsewhere were forcibly drafted into brothels catering to the Japanese military during WWII, according to mainstream historians. Outspoken Osaka mayor Toru Hashimoto said last week these women served a ‘necessary’ role keeping soldiers in line, sparking outrage in China and South Korea and inviting US criticism.”

Florida parent says ‘religious zealots’ got teen daughter arrested for lesbian relationship

“An 18-year-old girl was arrested for statutory rape over a same-sex relationship in Florida because of bigoted parents, according to the mother of the arrested teen. Kaitlyn Ashley Hunt was arrested February 16 by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office on two counts of lewd or lascivious battery on child.  Her mother, Kelley Hunt Smith, explained on Facebook that Kaitlyn began a ‘mutual consenting’ relationship with a girl at Sebastian River High School who was about three years younger. The parents of the younger girl were upset by the situation and contacted police, she wrote.”

You can test relatively easily whether it is true or whether it is fake. You can take chopped up segments and you can put them back together by melting the gold. You can take it and put it in the ground and it is not going to decay like apples or steaks.”

Julian Assange reveals government eavesdropping messages speculating he’s being framed

“Authorities at GCHQ, the government eavesdropping agency, are facing embarrassing revelations about internal correspondence in which Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is discussed, apparently including speculation that he is being framed by Swedish authorities seeking his extradition on rape allegations. A message from September 2012, read out by Assange, apparently says: ‘They are trying to arrest him on suspicion of XYZ … It is definitely a fit-up… Their timings are too convenient right after Cablegate.'”

“Six to eight bounty hunters busted into the locker rooms with guns and bullet proof TAC vests, witnesses told CBS Miami.  The bounty hunters did not explain why they were at the gym until after they scared the members. Amazingly, it was all legal under Florida law where bounty hunters have more legal rights than the police. ‘They work under whole different set of rules than police,’ explained Sgt. Bobby Hernandez with the Miami Beach Police Department. ‘They can go into third party residences or this case a gym and take custody of the subject, but a police officer can’t go into a private establishment, a private home without a warrant.'”

San Francisco bacon restaurant forced to close over smell

“The owner of Bacon Bacon, an eatery that specialized in all things porcine, was forced to shut down this week over complaints by neighbors that it smelled too, well, bacon-y. Neighbors claimed they offered to buy owner Jim Angelus a new air filter to help remedy the issue but were shut down.  However, the complaints did lead to the discovery that the restaurant also lacked proper health permits.  Bacon Bacon may be able to secure those permits, but a hearing can’t be held until July. So, until then, the restaurant must close. Angelus dismissed reports of illegal activity on the restaurant’s Facebook page and said he plans to keep operating the restaurant’s food truck.”
