Harvard Study: No Correlation Between Gun Control and Less Violent Crime

“The authors of the study conclude that the burden of proof rests on those who claim more guns equal more death and violent crime; such proponents should ‘at the very least [be able] to show a large number of nations with more guns have more death and that nations that impose stringent gun controls have achieved substantial reductions in criminal violence (or suicide).’ But after intense study the authors conclude ‘those correlations are not observed when a large number of nations are compared around the world.’ In fact, the numbers presented in the Harvard study support the contention that among the nations studied, those with more gun control tend toward higher death rates.”

Man still “smarting” from police detainment after refusing “smart meter”

“Because this man was the last holdout in this particular Guthrie neighborhood, the Guthrie Police Department sent three officers to the man’s house to protect the OG&E installer, while allegedly detaining the man, echoing a story out of Naperville, Illinois last month where two women were arrested for ‘interfering with the installation process.’ OK-SAFE, Inc. and Axxiom for Liberty report that the man said he was frisked and handcuffed, and would inexplicably leave no paperwork. This encounter was confirmed by Karen Kurtz, a spokesperson for OG&E. ‘We did have police out at that gentleman’s residence,’ Kurtz said. ‘It wasn’t a show of force at all.'”

Oklahomans Going It Alone Against Smart Meters?

“Many Oklahomans have been fighting individual, solitary battles against the utility corporations and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to get these unwanted smart meters off of their homes. I believe that there are many more Oklahomans out there suffering or fighting all alone. Whether or not we are personally concerned about the possible privacy, security or health issues that surround smart meters, we all should be concerned if the utility corporations, our elected representatives, the Oklahoma Corporation Commission and other public servants of this state are not being properly responsive to those who have serious objections to having a smart meter installed.”

Energy Firm Caught Breaking Into Door to Install Smart Meter

Energy Firm Caught Breaking Down Door to Install Smart Meter

“Smart Meters are a financial coup for Big Energy. This is why we are witnessing – and now catching on film – criminal acts of vandalism, breaking & entering and trespass by energy firms trying to install their next-generation ‘cash machines’ in the homes of customers. When companies are prepared to treat the properties of their customers with this much contempt, the extent to which sensitive personal data will be cared for is in little doubt.”

Family Farmers Fight Michigan Township For Their Animals

Family Farmers Fight Michigan Township For Their Animals

“Kelly Vander Kley Hunter and her family have spent the last three years pouring their time and money into building a small hobby farm in Mattawan, MI. Roughly a three hour drive from Detroit, Mattawan is a rural community that is home to many small farms with many farm animals. Yet Vander Kley Hunter had still checked before purchasing the property to make sure that having animals would be all right, and the township confirmed that farm animals were indeed allowed. But earlier this summer, the Hunters received a letter stating that their farm was no longer in compliance with the township zoning ordinance and that they had 90 days to get rid of more than half of their animals.”

State Governments Pay Crime Labs for Wrongful Convictions

google-search-header2

“A new study by Roger Koppl and Meghan Sacks shows that a number of states pay their crime labs by the conviction. Furthermore, legislators in many states require convicted people to pay for the lab testing that helped convict them. In economics, this is known as ‘moral hazard,’ in which incentives exist that encourage the very outcomes that people supposedly wish to avoid. Calling this situation ‘moral hazard,’ of course, is built on the assumption that government authorities really wish to avoid wrongful convictions and that police and prosecutors only want guilty people convicted.”

Holder promises to ease marijuana law enforcement in states with legal pot

“The United States Department of Justice announced Thursday that for the time being it will cease pursuing actions against Colorado and Washington over discrepancies in state and federal marijuana policies. The federal government did reserve the right to enact new laws in the future, however, adding in its memo that ‘if any of the stated harms do materialize — either despite a strict regulatory scheme or because of the lack of one — federal prosecutors will act aggressively to bring individual prosecutions focused on federal enforcement priorities and the Department may challenge the regulatory scheme themselves in these states.'”

Man fires marijuana-wrapped arrow at Washington jail, says he was squirrel hunting

“A Washington man was arrested this week after he admitted shooting an arrow wrapped with marijuana at the Whatcom County Jail, but he insists that he was aiming at a squirrel.  The arrow was later found on the building’s roof. It was wrapped with a bag containing marijuana and some other substance that had not been identified.  Jordan was charged on suspicion of introducing contraband into a jail, resisting arrest and obstructing law enforcement. He had just completed a 20-day jail sentence last Friday for assault and resisting arrest.”

Chicago Marathon ups security after Boston bombings

“Starting this year, all registered runners must pick up their own participant packets, which include their event-issued bib numbers and other race-related and promotional material. In past years, individuals could pick up packets on behalf of others.  All individuals entering Grant Park on race day will have to go through one of four designated security and bag screening checkpoints. Spectators are discouraged from carrying bags into the park, and runners will only be able to carry a clear, plastic event-issued bag — designed to speed security screening.”

Leland cop suspended after arresting man for recording another arrest

“An officer with the Leland Police Department has been suspended without pay for 28 days after a teenager recorded video of an arrest on his cell phone. 19-year-old Gabriel Self tried approaching Leland Police Sergeant John Keel as he was arresting another man on drug charges. Sgt. Keel told Self to leave the area. ‘Before I could even get two words out, I was immediately approached by Sgt. Keel with extreme intimidation,’ Self said.  As Self was explaining himself, Sgt. Keel arrested him. The charge was resisting, obstructing, or delaying a law enforcement officer. Self said Keel was simply standing in the parking lot, so he did not see how he could be interfering with anything.”
