‘South Park’ tackles the NSA, just not as expected

“In the end, Cartman manages to blow the whistle on the NSA’s program (which utilizes an imprisoned Santa to track the world’s citizens) but unfortunately discovers the public doesn’t give a shit. The citizens of South Park assume that whatever the government is doing, it has only their best interest at heart. It’s hard to say if this conclusion parallels reality, but if true, America may be closer to South Park than we thought.”

NYT: ‘Close the N.S.A.’s Back Doors’

“Crippling everyone’s ability to use encryption is going too far, just as the N.S.A. has exceeded its boundaries in collecting everyone’s phone records rather than limiting its focus to actual suspects. Representative Rush Holt, Democrat of New Jersey, has introduced a bill that would, among other provisions, bar the government from requiring software makers to insert built-in ways to bypass encryption.  In the meantime, several Internet companies, including Google and Facebook, are building encryption systems that will be much more difficult for the N.S.A. to penetrate, forced to assure their customers that they are not a secret partner with the dark side of their own government.”

A Government Answerable to No One

“The Edward Snowden March 2009 memo which reveals that the National Security Agency (NSA) is illegally spying on American citizens and then passing the raw information it obtains on to Israel is particularly shocking because it demonstrates with documentary evidence just how Washington’s inside the beltway crowd places its relationship with Israel above its responsibility to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. But the crowds of angry Americans concerned about their loss of privacy gathering in front of the White House failed to materialize because the story, unreported in most of the media, quickly disappeared down the memory hole.”

Income, Sales, Gas, Vehicle, and Alcohol Taxes Hit All-Time Highs

“Revenues from state and local individual income taxes, general sales and gross receipt taxes, motor fuel taxes, motor vehicle taxes and taxes on alcoholic beverages each hit all-time highs in the second quarter of this year, according to data released today by the Census Bureau.  That means that in no quarter of any year since the Census Bureau first started tracking state and local tax revenues in 1962 have Americans paid more in each of these categories of state and local taxes then they did in the quarter that ran from April through June of 2013.  Americans paid a record of $114.032 billion in state and local individual income taxes in the second quarter of this year.”
