‘South Park’ tackles the NSA, just not as expected

“In the end, Cartman manages to blow the whistle on the NSA’s program (which utilizes an imprisoned Santa to track the world’s citizens) but unfortunately discovers the public doesn’t give a shit. The citizens of South Park assume that whatever the government is doing, it has only their best interest at heart. It’s hard to say if this conclusion parallels reality, but if true, America may be closer to South Park than we thought.”

NYT: ‘Close the N.S.A.’s Back Doors’

“Crippling everyone’s ability to use encryption is going too far, just as the N.S.A. has exceeded its boundaries in collecting everyone’s phone records rather than limiting its focus to actual suspects. Representative Rush Holt, Democrat of New Jersey, has introduced a bill that would, among other provisions, bar the government from requiring software makers to insert built-in ways to bypass encryption.  In the meantime, several Internet companies, including Google and Facebook, are building encryption systems that will be much more difficult for the N.S.A. to penetrate, forced to assure their customers that they are not a secret partner with the dark side of their own government.”

October 26th, 2013, Washington, D.C.: A Rally Against Mass Surveillance

“Right now the NSA is spying on everyone’s personal communications, and they’re operating without any meaningful oversight. Since the Snowden leaks started, more than 569,000 people from all walks of life have signed the StopWatching.us petition telling the U.S. Congress that we want them to rein in the NSA.  On October 26th, the 12th anniversary of the signing of the US Patriot Act, we’re taking the next step and holding the largest rally yet against NSA surveillance. We’ll be handing the half-million petitions to Congress to remind them that they work for us — and we won’t tolerate mass surveillance any longer.”

The NY Times Is as Fed-up as You Are

ddc-header1

Please tell your Representative and Senators. The hardwired message says simply: Co-sponsor the ‘Surveillance State Repeal Act (HR 2818).’  You may borrow from or copy these additional sample comments:  ‘HR 2818 repeals the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendments Act. It prohibits the unconstitutional harvesting of my phone calls and emails. It prevents my providers from being forced to give the NSA ‘back door’ access to encryption systems that protect my information. As the New York Times argues, ‘If back doors are built into systems by the N.S.A., who is to say that other countries’ spy agencies — or hackers, pirates and terrorists — won’t discover and exploit them?'”

Beyond the Debt-Ceiling Debate

“There is a silver lining to all this. For our country, I think it’s this: A revolution is coming and, though we will go through some very hard times, on the other side will be a far better, smaller, more efficient government. One that does not overtax you. One that puts an end to spying on you. One that gets back to the principles of our founding fathers. And one that allows the USA to rise from the ashes of a leviathan that grew too big, too inefficient and outdated, too greedy and too power-hungry.  There’s also good news for investors who know how to play this next phase of the financial crisis, the phase that will ultimately transform us back into a great nation.”

A Government Answerable to No One

“The Edward Snowden March 2009 memo which reveals that the National Security Agency (NSA) is illegally spying on American citizens and then passing the raw information it obtains on to Israel is particularly shocking because it demonstrates with documentary evidence just how Washington’s inside the beltway crowd places its relationship with Israel above its responsibility to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States. But the crowds of angry Americans concerned about their loss of privacy gathering in front of the White House failed to materialize because the story, unreported in most of the media, quickly disappeared down the memory hole.”

Jacob Hornberger: Permanently Lay Off the Parasitic Sector

hornberger2

“The problem is that as the government sector expands in a society, it creates the illusion that the parasitic sector, owing to its enormous size and reach, must be kept intact and even expanded to maintain economic prosperity.  But that’s the worse thing a society can do because it will only move society further in the wrong direction–in the direction of impoverishment and bankruptcy. The best thing people can do is permanently lay off all those parasitic workers (and bring an end to their welfare-warfare functions), thereby restoring the right of people in the private sector to keep their wealth and thereby raising everyone’s standard of living in that society.”

$5.25 Million For Senate Hair Care; Politicians Living The High Life

“Even as they claim that things are so tough right now, our politicians continue to live the high life at the expense of U.S. taxpayers.  The statistics that I am about to share with you are very disturbing.  Please share them with everyone that you know.  The American people deserve the truth.  According to the Weekly Standard, an absolutely insane amount of money is being spent on the ‘hair care needs’ of U.S. Senators. Keep in mind that there are only 100 U.S. Senators, and many of them don’t have much hair left at this point. But hair care is just the tip of the iceberg.  The following are 21 other ways that our politicians are living the high life at your expense.”

Income, Sales, Gas, Vehicle, and Alcohol Taxes Hit All-Time Highs

“Revenues from state and local individual income taxes, general sales and gross receipt taxes, motor fuel taxes, motor vehicle taxes and taxes on alcoholic beverages each hit all-time highs in the second quarter of this year, according to data released today by the Census Bureau.  That means that in no quarter of any year since the Census Bureau first started tracking state and local tax revenues in 1962 have Americans paid more in each of these categories of state and local taxes then they did in the quarter that ran from April through June of 2013.  Americans paid a record of $114.032 billion in state and local individual income taxes in the second quarter of this year.”

Not Just Government; Americans Don’t Like Government Workers, Either

“Like an abused spouse increasingly appalled by a long-time partner’s behavior, Americans are falling out of love with the federal workers who enforce an endless litany of mandates, taxes and intrusions into their lives. New data from George Washington University’s Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration finds that, in addition to losing faith in the federal government itself, as other polls have revealed, a record number of Americans are losing faith in its loyal minions.   What could have happened in the past year to so erode respect for federal workers?”
