U.S. missed ‘red flags’ about gunman

“The security clearances issued by the government are under intense scrutiny as the gunman, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, had a valid pass that enabled him to enter the sprawling Navy Yard, located blocks from Congress.  Alexis had a security clearance despite a record of misconduct in the Navy and run-ins with the law, including two shooting incidents and a Rhode Island police report showing he had severe delusions. The 10-year security clearance, which was granted during his stint as a sailor from 2007-2011, remained valid once he left the service under an honorable discharge, according to the Navy.”

Navy Yard: SWAT team ordered to ‘stand down’ during mass shooting

“One of the first teams of heavily armed police to respond to Monday’s shooting in Washington DC was ordered to stand down by superiors, the BBC can reveal. A tactical response team of the Capitol Police, a force that guards the US Capitol complex, was told to leave the scene by a supervisor instead of aiding municipal officers. The Capitol Police department has launched a review into the matter. Aaron Alexis, 34, killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard. ‘I don’t think it’s a far stretch to say that some lives may have been saved if we were allowed to intervene,’ a Capitol Police source familiar with the incident told the BBC.”

Masked DEA Agents Raid Innocent Women, Refuse To Reveal Identities

“According to the Burleys’ accounts, the officers who raided their home were clad in black. Some wore balaclava masks or face shields that hid all but their eyes. Others pulled their hats down low to shield their identities. They had also obscured their names and badge numbers. Once the Burleys’ house had been thoroughly searched, both women asked the officers for their names. After holding an impromptu meeting, the officers told the Burleys that they wouldn’t divulge any information that could identify them individually. Instead, they told the women that they had just been raided by ‘Team 11.’ The women weren’t given a search warrant.”

Man shot, paralyzed by police after traffic stop mis-identification

“A police affidavit filed in the criminal case against Mr. Ford accused him of refusing to get out of the car, then putting the car in drive as two officers tried to pull him out and as Officer Derbish entered from the passenger’s side. In the affidavit, police also accused Mr. Ford of trying to push Officer Derbish out of the car while it was moving rapidly. Police wrote that that’s why Officer Derbish shot Mr. Ford. Officer Derbish shot Mr. Ford four times, according to the complaint, shattering one lower back vertebra and damaging two others, and injuring his thigh and chest. He has no feeling below the waist and isn’t expected to regain the ability to walk, according to Mr. Rabner.”

Family thrown to ground, threatened with gun and taser for expired plates

“The police report states Cassandra Meyers was cited for a license plate violation. Tatkowski says he didn’t like the way the officer was talking to Meyers, so he questioned the officer about his behavior.  ‘He hollered for me to get back in my truck, so I got back in my truck,’ Tatkowski said. ‘Next thing you know, I’m yanked out of the truck and it made my girlfriend say a few things. He yanked her out of the truck.’  Tatkowski says the officer threw him, his girlfriend, his daughter-in-law, and 14-year-old son to the ground.  The police report says commands were not listened to, so Officer Hart got out his taser and handgun.”

Family of Florida man run over by police car calls for ex-cop to be charged

“The family of a Florida man killed during a police pursuit over a seat belt violation released dashboard camera footage that appears to contradict the medical examiner’s findings.  Marlon Brown, 38, died May 8 after investigators said he refused to stop when a Volusia County sheriff’s deputy tried to pull him over for a seat belt violation, the Orlando Sentinel reported.  DeLand police took over the pursuit and Brown fled his car of foot and ran through a field but was cornered by a fence near a vegetable garden.  One of the officers, rookie James Harris, continued driving and appeared unable to stop his cruiser on the grass in time to avoid driving over Brown, who had slipped and fallen in the garden.”

Bumper Stickers Could Land Michigan Drivers In Jail

“Bumper stickers often say a lot about the person driving the car — but slapping one on your car could also be considered a crime.  If you have a bumper sticker from any organization, association, fraternity, lodge, group or club displayed on your car, you could be breaking the law.  Michigan law currently says if you’re not a member of the group that you’re promoting, you could be found guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine.  In 1979, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled the law was unconstitutional. However, despite the court’s ruling, the language remains part of Michigan Compiled Law.”

California becomes first state in nation to regulate ride-sharing

“Under the proposal, the PUC would have jurisdiction over ride-sharing under a new category of businesses called transportation network companies. The agency would also issue licenses to the services.  The decision is expected to preempt efforts by California cities to oversee or even ban ride-sharing under their authority to license taxi cab firms. Regulators would require drivers to undergo criminal background checks, receive driver training, follow a zero-tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol and carry insurance policies with a minimum of $1 million in liability coverage.”
