“The entertainment value of millions of health insurance policy cancellation letters is very great. There is noting quite so entertaining politically as a politician trying to spin his way out of a looming electoral disaster. Congressman Sander Levin of Michigan has explained to Americans who have received or will soon receive cancellation letters from their insurance companies that these letters are not in fact cancellation notices. They are transition notices. He even refers to these cancellation letters as ‘so-called cancellation notices.’ Congressman Levin is echoing an insurance spokesman from Florida who has also re-named the cancellation notices.”

Dream Chaser flight a ‘success’ despite gear failure
“The test was the final milestone in the company’s Commercial Crew Development 2 (CCDev-2) agreement with NASA; the company is already well on its way through completing the follow-on Commercial Crew Integrated Capability (CCiCap) award. ‘We believe that we satisfied the requirements’ of the CCDev-2 milestone, he said. ‘NASA needs to review and [is] expected to do that within 30 days.’ Sirangelo emphasized that the key part of the test was testing the flight characteristics of the Dream Chaser and verifying them against models, noting that the test was the first flight of lifting body ‘of this type’ since the 1970s.”

The Top 6 Reasons Why Everyone Needs a Second Passport
“Doug Casey has said over and over that spreading your political risk beyond one jurisdiction is the single most important thing he can recommend today. Obtaining a second passport and citizenship in another country is a critical part in heeding Doug’s advice. This is because it’s a fundamental step towards minimizing the political risk of being subjected to the whims of any single government. The political diversification benefits that come with obtaining a second passport are universal and prudent for anyone in the world to obtain… especially those under a desperate (fiscally or otherwise) government. Here are the top six reasons why everyone needs a second passport.”
Few Problems With Cannabis for California
“California’s 17-year experience as the first state to legalize medical marijuana offers surprising lessons, experts say. Warnings voiced against partial legalization — of civic disorder, increased lawlessness and a drastic rise in other drug use — have proved unfounded. Instead, research suggests both that marijuana has become an alcohol substitute for younger people here and in other states that have legalized medical marijuana, and that while driving under the influence of any intoxicant is dangerous, driving after smoking marijuana is less dangerous than after drinking alcohol.”
Australia releases draft legislation repealing mining tax
“‘The MRRT is a complex and unnecessary tax which struggled to raise the substantial revenue predicted by the former Government,’ Treasurer Joe Hockey said in a statement today. ‘Further still, this failed tax imposed significant compliance costs on one of our most important industries, while damaging business confidence which is critical to future investment and jobs.’ ‘The former Government linked a number of spending measures to the failed MRRT,’ he said. ‘These came at a significant cost to the Budget, to the point where the Government is borrowing money to pay for these commitments.'”

India’s third biggest gold fund reopens to investors
“India’s third biggest gold fund will begin accepting fresh investments again after shutting off new buy-ins three months ago to support government efforts to curb bullion demand and control a rising trade deficit. The government and the central bank launched a series of measures this year to curb the country’s appetite for gold as India battled a ballooning trade deficit and a weak currency. Gold is the biggest item on India’s import bill after oil. The gold fund is part of Reliance Capital, controlled by billionaire Anil Ambani. India has imposed a 10 percent duty on imports of gold, and tied imports to exports. Imports have fallen to a mere 7 tonnes in September from a record 162 tonnes in May.”

Easy Test to Separate Winners from Wasters
“The ratio of G&A to total expenses is the easiest measure of waste to find in 60 seconds or less. Since these expenses don’t directly generate a profit or grow the company, we want to see them kept low. When they’re higher than what most companies spend, it’s a red flag. That’s the theory. Simple enough—but what’s a good G&A ratio? We randomly selected 523 exploration and development companies operating in diverse jurisdictions and examined their expenses from the second quarter of 2013. The following chart shows the percentage that G&A expenses comprise of total operating expenses.”

Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue
“No nation of people has ever created a groundswell that successfully reversed the progress of a totalitarian government, once it was well underway. Generally, the course of events is that the penultimate stage is characterised by increasing domination and warfare. The final stage is one of social, political, and economic collapse. It is difficult to picture, today, the perspective of Europeans in the late 1930s. All around them, they could see an economic and political decline, yet the vast majority of people stayed right where they were, like horses that fear to leave a burning barn. They had become accustomed to the fact that Europe was the commercial and cultural centre of the world.”
U.S. Admits For First Time It Used NSA Surveillance in Criminal Case
“For the first time, the U.S. government notified a terror suspect that one of the National Security Agency’s far-reaching surveillance programs was used to build a criminal case against him, setting the stage for a constitutional challenge. The notification was filed to the lawyer of Jamshid Muhtorov, who is charged in Colorado with providing material support to a designated terrorist organization, specifically the Islamic Jihad Union. Authorities say he sought to travel to Syria to join a group of fighters there. There have been many previous challenges to the NSA’s programs, but so far none have been able to overcome the legal issue of standing.”

21 Drone Pilots Face Racketeering Charges In Arizona
“Twenty-one National Guard Airmen will face felony charges for allegedly bilking $1.4 million tax payer dollars through an expense scam. All of those listed in the indictment belonged to the Guard’s 214th Reconnaissance Group, which operated top-secret Predator drone flights over Iraq and Afghanistan. This was not a minor racketeering scam. Most of the defendants collected more than $100,000 by falsifying expenses between 2007 and 2010. These charges are disturbing, but they should not be surprising. Drone pilots are routinely given the opportunity to play God when they are handed the controls to a Predator drone.”
