Bitcoin Still A Bit Player For Hedge Funds

“‘It’s too controversial and too illiquid for most hedge funds,’ said Jason Ader, CEO of Owl Spring Asset Management, a $225 million hedge fund focused on activist investing.  Still, he’s not surprised Novogratz lent his name to a Bitcoin endorsement given the fact that the venture capital world is heavily invested in them, albeit tangentially. ‘I think it’s something that would be hard to ignore. The number that I see that’s fascinating is that almost $200 million in VC money has now been invested in various Bitcoin-related startups.’ According to Ader, Bitcoins must shed their questionable regulatory status before big-name hedge funds and investors buy into the hype.”

Norwegian student buys $27 in bitcoin in 2009, now owns an apartment

“Four years ago Norwegian student Kristoffer Koch spent 150 kroner ($26.60) on a little-known internet currency called bitcoin. It was 2009 and he was working on his thesis about encryption when he came across the mysterious currency. He bought some for fun, then forgot about it.  Fast-forward to April 2013, when the value of bitcoins started to soar.  He cashed in about one fifth of his bitcoins, and it was enough for him to buy an apartment in Toyen, one of the richer parts of Norway’s capital Oslo.  His partner was initially sceptical about him spending ‘real money’ on ‘fake money’. She has since changed her tune.”

Ben Swann: Is Bitcoin Real Capitalism?

“Media doesn’t talk about Bitcoin very often. When they do, it tends to be negative. Love it or hate it, is Bitcoin one of the few remaining examples of true capitalism?”

Silicon Valley Roused by Secession Call

“The tools are already here, he noted: 3-D printing makes it ‘impossible to ban physical objects,’ from guns to drones. The borderless digital currency Bitcoin defies economic regulation. The Quantified Self movement helps people self-measure and opt out of the health care system. He urged his audience to invent opt-out tools of their own, including one ‘allowing people, the middle class, to make tax shelters.’  Mr. Srinivasan has influential support: Some of the biggest names in the Valley have variously proposed building a Mars colony, an unregulated zone of experimentation on Earth or floating libertarian islands at sea.”

New Obamacare tax could hit veterinarians, increase pet care costs

“Dr. John Beltz and his veterinarian partner bought a new drug dispensing device this year that used to cost about $45,000 — but this time it cost $4,000 more.  The manufacturer told him the reason for the 9 percent price hike was a new tax contained in the Affordable Care Act, said Beltz, co-owner of Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center of Racine, 4333 Old Green Bay Road.  Although Beltz is now keenly aware of the new tax on some medical devices, other veterinarians are just starting to wake up to it. The American Veterinary Medical Association, or AVMA, is trying to educate its 84,000 members about this.”

Database hacking spree on US Army, NASA, others costs gov’t millions

“Federal prosecutors have accused a UK man of hacking thousands of computer systems and stealing massive quantities of data that resulted in millions of dollars in damages to victims, breaching networks belonging to the Army, the US Missile Defense Agency, NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency, and others, in most cases by exploiting vulnerabilities in SQL databases and the Adobe ColdFusion Web application. The objective of the year-long hacking spree was to disrupt the operations and infrastructure of the US government by stealing large amounts of military data and personally identifying information of government employees and military personnel.”

NSA tapped phones of 35 world leaders without Obama’s knowledge

“You might think that if the National Security Agency were tapping the phones of dozens of world leaders, President Obama would be aware of this fact. Apparently not—according to a Wall Street Journal report last night, the NSA’s spy operations are so extensive that not even the president of the United States knows about all of them.  Based on interviews with US officials, the paper said that ‘President Barack Obama went nearly five years without knowing his own spies were bugging the phones of world leaders. Officials said the NSA has so many eavesdropping operations under way that it wouldn’t have been practical to brief him on all of them.'”

Persian Handmade Shoes: Why Bitcoin

“Why don’t you accept other forms of payment?  The short answer is we’d love to but we can’t!  Our business is making and selling leather products. We like to sell our products across the world and the more customers the better. The problem is we operate in Iran and most payment systems either are not willing to serve us at all or impose a huge risk on our business.”
