Sheldon Adelson: US should drop atomic bomb on Iran

“Sheldon Adelson, noted businessman and owner of the newspaper Israel Hayom, suggested that the US should use nuclear weapons on Iran to impose its demands from a position of strength.  Adelson then imagined what might happen if an American official were to call up an Iranian official, say ‘watch this,’ and subsequently drop a nuclear bomb in the middle of the Iranian desert.  ‘Then you say, ‘See! The next one is in the middle of Tehran. So, we mean business. You want to be wiped out? Go ahead and take a tough position and continue with your nuclear development.”

Paul Craig Roberts: As Ye Sow, So Shall Ye Reap

withkitties_150_1202

“Influenced by neoconservative warmongers who advocated America using its ‘sole superpower’ status to establish hegemony over the world, Washington let hubris and arrogance run away with it. The consequence was that Washington destroyed its soft power with lies and war crimes, only to find that its military power was insufficient to support its occupation of Iraq, its conquest of Afghanistan, and its financial imperialism. Now seen universally as a lawless warmonger and a nuisance, Washington’s soft power has been squandered. With its influence on the wane, Washington has become more of a bully. In response, the rest of the world is isolating Washington.”

Do QE Markets Validate A Buy And Hold Strategy?

big_pic3

“Classical measures of value have been destroyed. It is very difficult to find true price discovery or a reasonable degree of certainty about these markets except that they are artificial and fragile, susceptible to infection from myriad sources. Though equity trends strongly ascend, the ascent is not based on increasing revenues but liquidity that equals debt. In this context, if one ‘buys the market’ one is betting on continuing QE and an absence of crises that have lingering effects. While QE is likely to continue so long as policy-makers prefer to keep the markets climbing, geopolitical, fiscal or economic crises are nascent, ready to burst into flame.”

In Fed and Out, Many Now Think Inflation Helps

“Some economists say more inflation is just what the American economy needs to escape from a half-decade of sluggish growth and high unemployment.  Economists, including Janet Yellen, President Obama’s nominee to lead the Fed starting next year, have long argued that a little inflation is particularly valuable when the economy is weak. The school board in Anchorage, Alaska, for example, is counting on inflation to keep a lid on teachers’ wages. Retailers including Costco and Walmart are hoping for higher inflation to increase profits. The federal government expects inflation to ease the burden of its debts. Yet by one measure, inflation rose at an annual pace of 1.2 percent in August.”

Texas woman stripped and jailed over unpaid traffic ticket

“A north Texas woman said she was ordered to strip and then jailed over an overdue traffic ticket.  Sarah Boaz said she was cited in August for running a stop sign, but she later lost the ticket and failed to pay her fine.  She said she knew that was wrong, but she was still surprised Wednesday morning to find a Richland Hills city marshal waiting outside her home with an arrest warrant.  She was taken to jail in handcuffs and a female officer ordered her to undress and stand against a wall. Jail officials said undressing was standard procedure for anyone booked into the facility, but the police department said the search was not technically considered a strip search.”

Tennessee judge barred baby name ‘Messiah’, accused of religious bias

“A magistrate court judge in Tennessee who forced a couple to change the name of their child from Messiah to Martin has been cited for religious bias by a state ethics panel and will face a disciplinary hearing.  Ballew’s statement supporting the name change filed by her with the order on August 13, 2013 said that ‘This court finds that it is not in the child’s best interest to keep the first name, ‘Messiah’. ‘Messiah’ means Savior, Deliverer, the One who will restore God’s Kingdom. ‘Messiah’ is a title held only by Jesus Christ.’ Reuters noted that Messiah was the 387th most popular name for boys born in the United States in 2012.”

Wisconsin jails pregnant woman, gives fetus – but not her – a lawyer

“Alicia Beltran said she was 12 weeks pregnant when she visited a health clinic July 2 near her home in Jackson, Wisc., for a checkup.  The expectant mother was then asked to take a drug test, which she said turned up negative for all substances except for Suboxone.  Beltran was arrested and taken in handcuffs to a hospital, where she was examined by a physician.  Her lawyers said the pregnancy was determined to be normal and healthy, but she was taken to jail and ordered by a judge to spend 90 days in a drug treatment center.  The judge told Belran that she would not have an attorney present but one had been appointed to represent her fetus.”

Challenging the 911 Landlord Law

“‘911 Landlord Laws’ are also known as ‘nuisance’ or ‘crime-free housing‘ ordinances. The ordinances vary from city to city, but certain elements are common: to keep their rental licenses, landlords are encouraged or required to perform criminal background checks on rental applicants; they are encouraged or required to use a ‘crime-free lease,’ by which any crime on the premises breaks the contract — even if the tenant was a victim and did nothing more than call the police; furthermore, the police can demand eviction of a ‘nuisance’ tenant, and landlords who do not comply can be repeatedly fined or worse. In some cities, landlords can also be forced to pay the cost of police visits.”

“Drug free zones” proposal would arrest any loiterer “no questions asked”

“Rochester City Council member Adam McFadden is proposing a law that would create drug free zones in the city of Rochester. It would mean that police officers would have the authority to arrest anyone who is loitering in front of a home,  a businesses or on a street corners…no questions asked.  If this becomes an ordinance, it’s going to be up to the Rochester Police Chief to designate these areas.  If he has an objective amount of evidence or information that shows illegal drugs are being sold, it will be defined as a drug free zone. Police will mark the area off by using barriers or tape, and they will post information-notifying residents of the boundaries.”
