Sarasota HuB business incubator to accept bitcoin virtual currency

“For entrepreneurs at the HuB, traditional dollars and cents may be going out of fashion.  The business incubator in Sarasota will become the first vendor in Southwest Florida — and it says the first real estate landlord in the state — to officially accept a controversial new digital currency that is gaining popularity in other major markets.  The HuB, and many of the 50-plus companies that call the downtown building home, now accept bitcoin as if it were cold, hard cash. They hope to set a trend for other businesses throughout the area to more widely accept the new method of payment.”

Trace thinks hedge funds and other big money trend traders are not driving Bitcoin’s price way up above its fundamentals as the amount of people using Bitcoin online and at bricks and mortar stores, restaurants, etc is rapidly growing.”

IRS Backs Down: Michigan Forfeiture Cases Voluntarily Dismissed

“Just hours after the Institute for Justice announced it was joining another civil forfeiture lawsuit in Michigan against the federal government, the IRS filed motions to voluntarily dismiss two forfeiture actions against innocent Detroit-area small-business owners. Terry Dehko of Fraser, Mich., and Mark Zaniewski of Sterling Heights, Mich., will each get back all of the money seized without warning from their business’s bank accounts (over $100,000 in total) by the federal government. Like most small-business owners, Terry Dehko and Mark Zaniewski make regular cash deposits at their banks, and that is the sole reason the IRS seized their money.”

Tennessee Hearings Demonstrate Absurdities Of Asset Forfeiture

Why? Because any member of a drug distribution networking entering a city is likely to be flush with drugs. Those leaving a city are likely to be flush with cash. It’s better for police to wait until the drugs are sold and out on the street. And, indeed, Williams’ investigations have found exactly that: A driver is much more likely to be pulled over by the task force while driving in the lanes leading out of the city than the lanes leading into it.”

Oakland moves forward with plans for Orwellian surveillance complex

“Lawmakers in Oakland voted to move forward with plans pertaining to the city’s Domain Awareness Center (DAC), an all-seeing intelligence-analysis complex that when completed will link data captured by surveillance cameras, gunshot detectors, license plate readers, Geographic Information Systems mapping and social media feeds to provide law enforcement personnel and emergency responders with 24/7 access to seemingly all public activity within the town of 400,000.  The city intends on having the DAC fully operational by July 2014, much to the chagrin of privacy advocates who have campaigned adamantly in recent months to try and halt officials from moving forward.”

Amazon Launches Its Fastest EC2 Instance Type Yet

“The new C3 instances are powered by 2.8 GHz Intel E5-2680 v2 Ivy Bridge processors and the smallest instance (c3.large) comes with 3.75GB of RAM, two virtual cores and seven EC2 compute units (Amazon’s proprietary way of classifying the speed of its instances). At the high end, the c3.8xlarge instance has 32 virtual cores, 60GB of RAM and 108 ECU. The processors, Amazon notes, support Intel’s Advanced Vector Extensions for more efficiently processing vector-oriented data.  The high-performance instance types all come with improved network performance and are all based on SSDs.”

Economist Recommends ‘E-Dollar’ That Loses 5% Of Its Value Per Year

“‘If you care at all about the future of this country, one of the things you need to realize is we need to solve the demand side so we can get back to the supply side issues that are really the tricky thing for the long run,’ he said. ‘The way to solve the demand side issues that is the most consistent with not messing up our supply side is monetary policy and making it so we can have negative interest rates.’ At the moment, e-dollars are still only a theoretical concept, but Kimball is hopeful that they could be put into action in the near future. He believes that if a government bought in, it could be using an electronic currency in three years and reap the benefits of it soon after.”
