Early ‘90s collectible gaming card sells for $27k on eBay

“Pictured above is the ‘Alpha’ Black Lotus from the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Dubbed ‘Alpha’ because it was published in the game’s first edition back in 1993, the Black Lotus was printed in a run of only 1100, and is now on the game’s ‘Reserved List’ of cards that will never be reissued. It’s typically considered the most valuable Magic card ever printed — but a recent eBay auction, which concluded on November 17, sets a new standard at $27,302.  Back in 1993, an 8-card ‘booster pack’ — which might have contained a Black Lotus if you were lucky — cost $2.45.”

Australian central bank’s talk of intervention sends Aussie dollar down

“The overnight fall in the Australian dollar shows once again that just a few carefully targeted words from Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens have the power to move markets.  While Mr Stevens did not say the Reserve Bank was about to intervene to pull the dollar down, his comment that the option was in the monetary policy ‘toolkit’ proves that words from the central bank governor can be timely bullets.  The impact-laden comments show the RBA’s frustration in its attempts to lower the dollar, despite 2.25 percentage points of cuts to the official cash rate since late 2011.”

Alpha Technology Announces ASIC Miners for Litecoin are Coming Soon

“Manchester, UK-based Alpha Technology has announced it will start developing the first purpose-built ASIC mining hardware for litecoin, signing a partnership deal with Indian designer and manufacturer Dexcel Designs. The company announced it would begin taking pre-orders for affordable and efficient litecoin ASICs in December, for shipping in early/mid 2014.  It would represent a significant increase in computing power backing the litecoin network. At present, most mining of the world’s second most popular cryptocurrency still takes place on regular graphics cards/GPUs (as did bitcoin previously).”

Napster Documentarian’s Next Project: The Untold Story of Bitcoin

“The way director Alex Winter sees it, Napster, WikiLeaks and Bitcoin are just threads in the same yarn – a story of a deep divide growing between the internet that everyone can see and a more mysterious web where peer-to-peer pioneers rule. ‘With Downloaded I was less interested in the implications of music or file-sharing… and more concerned with what peer-to-peer architecture meant in terms of creating global community, which could be used for good or ill,’ Winter told WIRED. ‘What’s going on with [Bitcoin] is just the evolution of peer-to-peer architecture – this is just an outgrowth of the story I started to tell with Napster.'”
