Interview with Bobby Lee, CEO, BTC China

“China has been a big question mark for a while, so I’ve been traveling through China, speaking on Bitcoin and Coinpunk, hearing how people in China are using Bitcoin, and filming for a short documentary on Bitcoin in China. The Bobby Lee interview was part of that filming process, but due to the recent interest in his work at BTC China, I’ve decided to release the raw footage to this before the documentary comes out.”

An upcoming short documentary on the rise of Bitcoin in China

“As part of my work on Coinpunk, I was invited to speak on Coinpunk and Bitcoin in China. This was a rare opportunity to get a glimpse into what was going on with Bitcoin in China, right at the time when they are driving a lot of the demand in the cyberpunk cryptocurrency. There is a lot of confusion as to what’s happening in China. So we grabbed a decent camera, flew to China, and started filming. The result will be a new short documentary on Bitcoin in China, coming out very soon. Interest in Bitcoin within China is growing at an incredible speed. The following picture is from a Bitcoin meetup in Beijing. The organizer thought a dozen people would show up. Over 300 did.”

Bitcoin beginning to go mainstream

“An online travel agency in Los Angeles and a European private university have begun accepting payments in the popular virtual currency known as Bitcoin, a sign that businesses are moving into a new global economic era.  CheapAir.com, an online travel agency based in Los Angeles, began taking the virtual currency Thursday for the purchase of flights, and University of Nicosia in the capital of Cyprus began accepting tuition payments in Bitcoin. ‘I’m excited about it,’ says CheapAir.com CEO Jeff Klee. ‘I’m anxious to see how popular it becomes as we get the word out. We expect people to come to us specially because they can use Bitcoin.'”

Dutch Bank Rabobank is Blocking Customers from Buying Bitcoins

“In the US many banks don’t accept any bitcoin businesses as clients, possibly because of regulatory concerns and money laundering risks.  Individuals aren’t free from bitcoin banking issues either. CoinDesk reported recently that a Swedish bank froze a customer’s account for selling just 5 BTC.  Now it is the Netherlands’ turn. According to an article in the Dutch press, Rabobank cancelled 99% of its customers’ transactions with bitcoin exchanges on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rabobank did not give a reason for this, but a spokesperson for Dutch bitcoin exchange BTCNext said it was because transactions are seen as potential fraud.”

Bitcoin Gets a Cautious Nod From China’s Central Bank

“Speaking at an economic forum on Wednesday, Yi Gang, the deputy governor of the People’s Bank of China and director of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, said that it would be impossible for China’s central bank to recognize the Bitcoin as a legitimate financial instrument in the near future. But, Mr. Yi added, people are free to participate in the Bitcoin market and he would personally adopt a long-term perspective on the currency.  The statement comes during a week of remarkable turbulence on China’s numerous Bitcoin exchanges.”

Richard Branson: Virgin Galactic to accept bitcoin

“Billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson appeared on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box‘ on Friday and announced that his commercial space flight venture will accept bitcoin as payment. He called it ‘a new exciting currency.’  Virgin Galactic accepted its first purchase with bitcoin on Friday. Many bitcoin users are the type of people who will buy tickets for space travel, Branson said.  Branson—a bitcoin investor—did the interview from his private island in the Caribbean, Necker Island, where the rebuilding project of his luxury home is now complete. The previous one burned down two years ago.”

China Central Bank: No Longer in China’s Interest to Increase Reserves

“The People’s Bank of China said the country does not benefit any more from increases in its foreign-currency holdings, adding to signs policy makers will rein in dollar purchases that limit the yuan’s appreciation. ‘It’s no longer in China’s favor to accumulate foreign-exchange reserves,’ Yi Gang, a deputy governor at the central bank, said in a speech organized by China Economists 50 Forum at Tsinghua University yesterday. The monetary authority will ‘basically’ end normal intervention in the currency market and broaden the yuan’s daily trading range, Governor Zhou Xiaochuan wrote in an article in a guidebook explaining reforms outlined last week following a Communist Party meeting.”

If Senators Really Like Bitcoin They Should Encourage Banks To Cooperate

“With many of their fears assuaged, the senators seemed ready to ask what they could do to foster Bitcoin and other digital currencies during these early stages of innovation. And the message was clear: give banks the assurances they need to accept Bitcoin companies as clients. In the last year, this has been a huge problem for U.S.-based companies.  The senators expressed an admirable concern about falling behind in this arena. And if they really want the country to catch up, they will find a way to help Bitcoin integrate with the U.S. banking system.”

A Proper Use For Bitcoin: Avoiding Capital Controls

“Imagine you are in a country with capital controls: that was much of the western world up until the late 1970s, early 1980s in fact. Until 1979 in my native UK you had to have permission from the government to take more than £25 out of the country. In fact, George Orwell had to ask permission to use his own dollar royalties to buy the new American drugs that didn’t cure his tuberculosis.  These sorts of restrictions still apply in countries around the world. What Bitcoin can do is make such regulations a simple matter to avoid. Rather than trying to take a suitcase of cash on the plane you can just buy Bitcoin locally, stick your USB stick in your pocket and then travel.”
