Del. hospital doctor busted for selling illegal drugs for Bitcoins

“Federal agents arrested 32-year-old Dr. Olivia Bolles at her home in Newark, Delaware, today and accused her of illegally selling drugs online to buyers in at least  17 countries through the former SilkRoad online drug market. Bolles, a resident physician at Christiana Hospital, the dominant healthcare system in northern Delaware, was charged with illegal distribution of controlled substances. The indictment says she sold drugs through SilkRoad, which used the electronic private fiat currency Bitcoin to make it hard to identify buyers and sellers. She faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison if found guilty.”

Psychedelic Science: Magic Mushrooms

“Serious study of magic mushrooms essentially ended when the compounds psilocybin and psylocin were listed as Schedule I drugs in 1971. However, people around the world have used magic mushrooms with the goals of expanding consciousness and achieving spiritual growth ever since it was popularized by the hippies in the the 1960s. Despite its illegal status, researchers have once again started studying the effects of psilocybin on humans. ReasonTV caught up with Roland Griffiths of Johns Hopkins University and Robin Carhart-Harris of Imperial College London at the Psychedelic Science 2013 conference to learn what’s happening at the cutting edge of psilocybin research.”

Bitcoin lawyer: ‘Bitcoin still high risk, not yet ready for mainstream’

“From obscure cryptographic experiment to multibillion-dollar virtual currency, Bitcoin’s sudden rise to fame has been steeped in controversy. As US authorities give it the green light for the first time, will Bitcoin become the foundation of a new global financial system, or will the bubble burst, proving to be one of the greatest Ponzi schemes in the history of mankind? Patrick Murck, General Counsel of the Bitcoin Foundation, joins Oksana to discuss these issues.”

Driver Arrested in Ohio for Secret Car Compartment Full of Nothing

“Norman Gurley, 30, is facing drug-related charges in Lorain County, Ohio, despite the fact that state troopers did not actually find any drugs in his possession.  Ohio passed a law in 2012 making it a felony to alter a vehicle to add a secret compartment with the ‘intent’ of using it to conceal drugs for trafficking.  Gurley is the first actual person arrested under the law.  They did not, however, find any drugs, which means they’re arresting Gurley for the crime of an empty space.  Given this is the first arrest, you have to wonder how the courts might view a law making it a felony to alter a person’s own property for reasons that have nothing to do with actual public safety.”

Mountain Man Arrested for Trying to Feed Himself

“In a packed courtroom, 52-year-old Ernie Tertelgte told the judge ‘I am a living man protected by natural law and I have the right to forage for food when I am hungry… You are trying to create a fictitious, fraudulent action.’ Charged with fishing without a license and resisting the arrest for fishing without a license, Mr. Tertegte says he’s being wrongly prosecuted for trying to feed himself.  Tertelgte, 52 years old, was arrested on Monday and is accused of fishing without a license and then resisting arrest. He appeared before the judge via video from the Gallatin County Detention Center, and it was standing room only more than a dozen friends and family members filled the small courtroom.”

Inside America’s Plan to Kill Online Privacy Rights Everywhere

“The United States and its key intelligence allies are quietly working behind the scenes to kneecap a mounting movement in the United Nations to promote a universal human right to online privacy, according to diplomatic sources and an internal American government document obtained by The Cable.  The diplomatic battle is playing out in an obscure U.N. General Assembly committee that is considering a proposal by Brazil and Germany to place constraints on unchecked internet surveillance by the National Security Agency and other foreign intelligence services. American representatives have made it clear that they won’t tolerate such checks on their global surveillance network.”

Alleged Silk Road Boss Now Accused Of Six Murders-For-Hire, Denied Bail

“The journal, according to Turner’s account, also details how Ulbricht grew several kilos of psychedelic mushrooms in a lab in an ‘off-the-grid’ cabin to have an initial product to sell on the Silk Road. In a spreadsheet found on Ulbricht’s computer, Turner said Ulbricht’s expenses and income were listed, including a line for ‘sr inc.’ that he said listed its value at $104 million.  To support the prosecution’s argument Ulbricht represented a flight risk, he noted that Ulbricht had taken steps towards applying for citizenship in the island nation of Dominica, and had discussed moving there with friends on Facebook.”

Google boss: Entire world will be online by 2020

“‘For every person online, there are two who are not,’ Schmidt wrote on his Google+ account. ‘By the end of the decade, everyone on Earth will be connected.’  He followed up with a related thought.  ‘Think about how great the internet is with 2B users. Now think about how amazing it will be when 5B come online in a decade. #NewDigitalAge.’  It’s just the sort of big thinking that has led Google to become one of the largest and most innovative tech companies in the world. The rise of the mobile Web is also sure to play a role. In Africa, more people have access to a mobile phone than have access to electricity.”

Here’s how Bitcoin charmed Washington

“The cordial atmosphere of this week’s hearings was the culmination of months of careful diplomacy by Bitcoin advocates. Since the spring, leaders of the Bitcoin community and sympathetic policy advocates have been engaging with federal regulators, lawmakers and other influential figures inside the beltway. The result: a near-unanimous consensus that the federal government needs to be careful to avoid hampering the growth of the world’s first completely decentralized payment network.  Murck and Andresen’s trip to Washington proved to be crucial to building productive relationships with policymakers.”
