Russian lawmaker seeks to ban US dollar, predicts 2017 collapse

“To protect Russians against the ‘collapsing US debt pyramid’, a Russian legislator has filed a draft bill to ban circulation of the currency in Russia.  Once a Moscow mayoral hopeful, Mikhail Degtyarev, 32, likens the US dollar to a worldwide ponzi scheme which he says is scheduled to end in 2017.  The bill would impose a ban on dollars within a year of its passage, and any private citizen holding accounts in dollars would either need to spend the money or convert it to another currency. There is no proposed ban on the euro, British pound, yen, or yuan. If one doesn’t exchange or transfer dollars within a year, the dollars will be seized by officials, and reimbursed in rubles within 30 calendar days.”

Bitcoin Companies and Entrepreneurs Can’t Get Bank Accounts

“The Bitcoin banking casualty list is a long one: popular Bitcoin – USD exchanges Bitfloor and BitInstant, in New York; Tradehill, in California; and Bitbox, in Michigan, have been out of commission for months. All had registered as money exchangers with the Department of Treasury’s FinCen. Mobile Bitcoin payment company Coinapult moved from Colorado to Panama to avoid the ‘murky, unpredictable, and onerous’ regulatory environment in the U.S.. Capital One even shut down the merchant account for Mulligan Mint, a commemorative coin maker, when it started making physical Bitcoin silver coins; the business was not in fact dealing with Bitcoins, just making fake models of them.”

A Look at Real Estate in Malaysia & Singapore

“The first stop was Kuala Lumpur (KL). I was impressed at the level of development and with the quality of the infrastructure, in particular the newer developments underway in the satellite cities that surround KL.  Similar to the growth model used in parts of India, areas a few kilometers outside major metro centers are targeted for development where whole cities are literally grown out of the ground. Unlike China, though, these planned cities actually have residents and businesses and buzzing commerce. I visited one of these planned developments—Damansara Perdana—and it looked like a community that you’d expect to see in an upper-middle class area of Southern California like Orange County.”

Pot vaporizer boom leads to secret stoners

“Unlike traditional smoking devices, which burn marijuana directly, there is no ash or harsh smoke. The devices are fairly simple to operate: Users place a few pinches of marijuana into a small compartment, then press a button to activate a heating element that operates much like a convection oven, stripping the plant’s cannabinoids and releasing a vapor containing just the good stuff. (The portable devices use rechargeable batteries; pricier at-home models run off power cords.)  The vapor, while not entirely scentless, is far more discreet than the usual big ol’ dank cloud of smoke. Users report the ability to toke away in public, without fear of alerting every cop within sniffing range.”

Apple Is Still Afraid of Bitcoin: Coinbase Bitcoin Wallet App Gets Axed

“Today, November 14th, 2013 we can add another major casualty to Apple’s Bitcoin hitlist: Coinbase.  Just 23 days ago, Coinbase released on their blog their highly anticipated Coinbase Bitcoin Wallet App.  The former link of the Coinbase iOS App now redirects to the main iTunes page.  Former Bitcoin Apps from the iOS App store’s list of casualties include BitPak.  The reason that Rob Sama, BitPak’s founder, was given by Apple representatives was simply: ‘Because that Bitcoin thing is not legal in all jurisdictions for which BitPak is for sale’.  Apple is obviously still on the same witch hunt from last year.”

Peter Thiel claims bitcoin has the potential to change the world

“Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and famed Silicon Valley investor, has revealed he believes bitcoin could make some serious waves in the world of finance. Speaking at the Thiel Foundation Under 20 Summit, last weekend, Thiel said he gave a talk back in 1999 that mentioned the end of monetary sovereignty and how encrypted money was going to ‘change the world’.  ‘I do think bitcoin is the first one of these that has the potential to do something like that,’ he added.  The investor addressed the anti-bitcoin arguments that digital currency is ‘fake’, a temporary ‘bubble’ and ‘doesn’t represent anything real’ by stating that a lot of these arguments actually apply to the US dollar too.”

Canada’s New Digital Divide: The Digital Currency Challenge

“The Canadian Bitcoin community has come far in the past six months. Earlier this year, all that Canada had to show in the Bitcoin world was a few restaurants accepting Bitcoins in Vancouver and Edmonton, two exchanges and meetup groups of less than 10 people a month. Now, we have a fully-fledged 1400-square-metre Bitcoin embassy (i.e. a startup incubator dedicated to all things Bitcoin) in Montreal and Toronto recently celebrated the launch of the Vault of Satoshi’s Bitcoin exchange as well as Coinkite, a full service Bitcoin bank. Two weeks ago, a Bitcoin ATM launched in Vancouver. To top it off, the Bitcoin Alliance of Canada will be making its official launch this month.”

Could China make or break bitcoin?

“‘There are two things affecting bitcoin in China,’ Linke Yang, co-founder and vice president of BTC China – the world’s largest bitcoin exchange by volume – told CNBC on the sidelines of the conference. ‘One is that there are a lot of [bitcoin] miners in China. The second is that, traditionally, high net-worth individuals and investors first go to the property market to invest and then the stock market, but since the property market is capped and controlled and stocks maybe aren’t doing so well that’s changing,’ Yang said. ‘After we had the China Central Television piece [on bitcoin in March] people here know about bitcoin and are putting their money into it.'”
