Black Market Dollar Exchange Sparks Argentina Luxury Sales Crackdown

“Argentines who buy a car valued at more than 350,000 pesos ($58,600) will now be required to justify the transaction with the Financial Information Unit, the nation’s money-laundering watchdog, according to a Nov. 11 decree.  Argentina is boosting its currency controls as consumers faced with 25 percent annual inflation turn to everything from luxury cars to gold and bitcoins as a store of savings. With the black market offering holders of undeclared U.S. currency 3.8 pesos more than the official exchange rate of 5.9764 pesos per dollar, demand for premium cars from Volkswagen AG’s Porsche and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG is causing a 33 percent jump in imports this year.”

Feds expand hunt for offshore tax evaders

“Federal judges approved special summonses aimed at getting account data and identifying information of American banking clients of Switzerland’s Zurcher Kantonalbank and Bermuda-based N.T. Butterfield & Son, prosecutors said Tuesday.  The two banks, which could not immediately be reached for comment, don’t have U.S. operations. So investigators got authorization to serve the summonses on four U.S. banks and one London-based bank where Zurcher Kantonalbank and N.T. Butterfield maintained correspondent accounts to service U.S. clients. The five include Bank of New York Mellon, Citibank, JPMorgan Chase Bank, HSBC Bank and Bank of America.”

Afghan probe into civilian killings stymied by US refusal to cooperate

“Afghanistan’s intelligence service has chosen to abandon its investigation into a number of civilian deaths in Wardak province, following US refusal to look into claims of Special Forces complicity in the killings, according to a document seen by Reuters.  US forces carried out a series of raids between October 2012 and February 2013, in which seventeen Afghan civilians were detained. The bodies of ten of them were later found in shallow graves, just hundreds of meters from the Nerk Special Forces base, in May. The US Army’s Operational Detachment-Alpha is based there. They are also known as the Green Berets.”
