Where’s the Crisis That Requires Crisis-Era Monetary Policy?

Look at job creation. Look at GDP growth, or confidence, or anything else. None of these economic indicators are near or at the depths seen in 2007-2008 when the economy and credit markets were crashing. Then there’s the ISM manufacturing index, a benchmark survey of economic activity that has been conducted since 1948. This is no minor report, it’s right up there with the monthly jobs survey in terms of importance. And the story it’s telling is very important as far as I’m concerned.”

The Minimum Wage and Unemployment in Australia

“In the USA, the youngest workers have a higher minimum wage than in Australia, but the wage then crosses over to a higher minimum in Australia once a worker reaches 18 years of age. By the age of 21 the minimum wage in Australia is substantially higher, but by then work skills have also grown substantially.  The simple comparison of the minimum wage in Australia with minimum wage in the USA tends to use the headline rate for adults over 21 years of age. This is quite misleading, because there is a large class of younger workers where the minimum wage in Australia is much lower, and these tend to be the workers most affected by minimum wage laws.”

The SBSE specifically targets unincorporated, small farmers, tradespersons, sole proprietors, consultants and other self-employed persons. The ostensible rationale is that these taxpayers have more opportunities to hide income. But a more important reason may be that lower-income taxpayers can’t afford effective legal counsel.  A recent study found that small firms without hot-shot tax counsel were five times more likely to be audited than larger entities with big-brand representation. Self-employed consultants and contractors were the choicest audit targets of all.”

Return Airport Security To The Airlines

“In June we reported that a former TSA agent was arrested on felony cocaine charges. This week WKBW reported that Todd Stoddard received a very lenient sentence when he was sentenced to up to five years probation.  I’m not a lawyer, but that seems like a very minimal sentence for being charged with six counts related to possession, sale, and use of cocaine. Apparently, there must be some legal perks that come with TSA employment. On top of that, if Mr. Stoddard has any trouble finding work, he could always find a job working as an ObamaCare navigator.”

B.C. school bans kindergarteners from touching each other

“A Langley elementary school has banned kindergarten students from touching each other at recess, a policy some parents think is both unnecessary and unworkable.  Mom Julie Chen said she was shocked when she received a letter sent home with Coghlan Fundamental Elementary students on Friday outlining the new hands-off rule. ‘I can’t imagine little kids not being able to hug each other or help each other on the playground,’ Chen told CTV News. ‘No tag, no hugging, no touching at all.’  School district spokesman Ken Hoff said Coghlan Fundamental was simply responding to parents’ complaints about rough play during recess, and that students won’t be [severely] penalized for slipping up.”

Who Should Decide What You Eat?

“Why can’t I choose what I consume?  Shouldn’t I be free to balance health risk, price, and taste on my own?  With trans fats consumption trending down already, why should the FDA ‘fix’ the problem through coercion and prohibition?  How is that moral?  And where does the FDA get the authority?  The Constitution gives only Congress the power to pass federal laws. It CANNOT delegate this power to unelected bureaucrats.  To do so mocks the rule of law and representative government.  At least when Congress passes bad laws, you have to explain your votes to the people. FDA busybodies have no such accountability.”

NYC’s Bloomberg led the way on trans fats ban

“In the years before the city took action, big agribusiness companies had already spent years developing alternatives to the main source of trans fat – partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Yet there was little market demand for alternatives, which included blends of soybean, cottonseed and palm oils.  McDonald’s, KFC and other restaurant companies had quietly been experimenting with substitute frying oils and shortening for years, trying to see if they could make the switch without consumers noticing a change in taste. All of those efforts went into overdrive when Bloomberg’s health board implemented the ban, and effectively created a huge new marketplace for trans fat alternatives overnight.”
