Third largest cryptocurrency PPCoin moves into spotlight

“Everyone knows the first person who walked on the moon. Lots of people know the second. But whoever remembers the third?  As the third largest cryptocurrency in the world, peercoin (also know as Peer-to-Peer Coin or PPCoin) is trying to bolster its reputation. It isn’t doing too badly having just been accepted as an official currency by new Canadian exchange Vault of Satoshi. A local face-to-face peercoin exchange is also launching, and efforts are been made to get specialist event organizers to use peercoin as their official currency.”

The CIA Retains Control of Drone Assassinations

“President Obama said earlier this year that he was ordering the CIA to transfer drone operations to the Department of Defense.  He also thought www.Healthcare.gov would work. He was out of the loop in both cases.  The CIA is not going to give up its drones. From the point of view of politicians inside the USA and outside, it makes sense to let the CIA run the lion’s share of the drone program. It’s a matter of experience, cost savings, blame, and immunity from Congressional snooping — of snooping by the Commander in Chief. Look, do we want efficiency or not? If the goal is to kill attendees at wedding parties, don’t we want this done by skilled experts who have done this many times?”

C.I.A. Is Said to Pay AT&T for Call Data

“The C.I.A. is paying AT&T more than $10 million a year to assist with overseas counterterrorism investigations by exploiting the company’s vast database of phone records, which includes Americans’ international calls, according to government officials.  The cooperation is conducted under a voluntary contract, not under subpoenas or court orders compelling the company to participate, according to the officials. Because the C.I.A. is prohibited from spying on the domestic activities of Americans, the agency imposes privacy safeguards on the program, said the officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity because it is classified.”

Police kill man, 19, after father calls to stop him from buying cigarettes

“A 19-year-old has been shot dead by police after his father dialed 911 to report his truck stolen in order to teach his son a lesson for driving off to buy cigarettes.  Patrol officer Adam McPherson fired six shots into the truck and the 19-year-old later died from two gunshot wounds. Father James Comstock told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday: ‘He took off with my truck. I call the police, and they kill him. It was over a damn pack of cigarettes. I wouldn’t buy him none.  ‘And I lose my son for that.’  Gary Shepley, Tyler’s step-grandfather, questioned why police didn’t back away from the truck, which belonged to a lawn care company, as suggested by an officer during the chase.”

HealthCare.gov: How political fear was pitted against technical needs

“Staffers were aware by late 2012 that the work of building the federal exchange was lagging. Employees repeatedly warned at meetings late last year and in January that so many things were behind schedule that there would be no time for adequate ‘end to end’ testing of how the moving parts worked together, the former HHS official said.  ‘People were just like, well . . . it’s a dynamic we can’t change,’ the former official said. ‘There wasn’t a way to push back or challenge it up the line. You had the policy people, largely at the White House, pushing the deadlines and tinkering with the policy, rather than the people who had to run the critical operating path design and program the system.'”

Obamacare To Increase Individual-Market Premiums By Average Of 41%

“One of the fundamental flaws of the Affordable Care Act is that, despite its name, it makes health insurance more expensive. Today, the Manhattan Institute released the most comprehensive analysis yet conducted of premiums under Obamacare for people who shop for coverage on their own. In the average state, Obamacare will increase underlying premiums by 41 percent. As we have long expected, the steepest hikes will be imposed on the healthy, the young, and the male. And Obamacare’s taxpayer-funded subsidies will primarily benefit those nearing retirement—people who, unlike the young, have had their whole lives to save for their health-care needs.”

“The official goal of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act was to make college more affordable. How? By making loans to students. The effect has been to lure millions of students into long-term debt for the purchase of liberal arts degrees that do not lead to high-income jobs.  ObamaLoans took loan-making decisions away from banks and placed this into the hands of federal employees at the Department of Education — bureaucrats with job tenure. The amount of student debt owed to the U.S. government in 2009 was $120 billion. Today, it is $675 billion.  In July 2010, ObamaCare was passed. That’s when the loans began to multiply.”
