“This week marks the one-year anniversary of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence’s adoption of a sweeping 6,300-page study detailing the CIA’s post-9/11 detention, rendition, torture and interrogation program. But the public has yet to see one word of it. That’s because, even though it deals with some of the most important and contentious issues this country has grappled with in recent years, the entire report remains classified. According to senators who have seen it, the report includes a damning indictment and repudiation of the longstanding claims that torture and ill treatment led to accurate and actionable intelligence.”

Winklevoss says Bitcoin valuation will top $40k, plays down Silk Road

“The twins are in the process of setting up the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust, a listed fund to manage their Bitcoin wealth and bring greater legitimacy to the virtual currency. Papers for the initial public offering were filed in July, but the final decision is still pending. Due to regulations, Cameron was unable to discuss the trust in the AMA.  The brothers are unsurprisingly bullish on Bitcoin. Cameron’s conservative bet is that its US dollar valuation will surpass $40,000 per coin — a potentially colossal figure — as he explained in a response to one Reddit user.”

Brewington case focuses First Amendment attention on Indiana

“Daniel Brewington is either a poster child for the wrongful prosecution of free speech or a man whose online rants about a judge constituted criminal threats. It all depends on your point of view.  After almost two years in the Department of Correction, Brewington was freed Sept. 5, just days before the Indiana Supreme Court heard oral arguments on whether to formally grant transfer in his case. Brewington had done his time for a Dearborn County jury’s conviction of intimidation, perjury and obstruction of justice stemming from blog posts he made criticizing a judge who stripped him of joint custody of his children.”

Dark money: only 35 Bitcoin dealers are compliant with US law

“In the US, the virtual currency is subject to money transmitter laws at the federal level and in 47 states. The rules are not always clear, however, because they are written for money transmission services, not virtual currencies. The regulations are also in flux. New York is considering a special ‘BitLicense‘ for virtual currency firms, for example.  As a result, many Bitcoin companies have not registered at either the state or federal level.  Only 35 Bitcoin companies have registered with FinCEN, the bureau of the US Treasury Department that has taken the lead on Bitcoin regulation, and the agency has reached out to several dozen more that it believes need to register.”
