Google Said to Mull Designing Chips in Threat to Intel

“Google Inc. (GOOG) is considering designing its own server processors using technology from ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), said a person with knowledge of the matter, a move that could threaten Intel Corp. (INTC)’s market dominance.  By using its own designs, Google could better manage the interactions between hardware and software, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.  ‘We are actively engaged in designing the world’s best infrastructure,’ said a spokeswoman for Google. ‘This includes both hardware design (at all levels) and software design.’ She declined to say whether the company may develop its own chips.”

Entertainment Company Wayi to Become Taiwan’s First Bitcoin Exchange

“Taiwanese digital entertainment company Wayi is aiming to become Taiwan’s first bitcoin exchange, and announced it will soon begin accepting bitcoin as a payment option on its shopping site.  Once it has accumulated a bitcoin supply, the company will start its exchange service, charging customers a 3% fee to trade in their cash. Customers will also be able to exchange their bitcoins back into local currency through digital exchange centers.  In response to the statement, the company’s stock price rallied, reaching the 7% daily upper limit allowed by the Taiwan Stock Exchange.”

Growing acceptance of marijuana no help to pot convicts serving life

“John Richard Knock realizes he’ll likely die in a 12-by-10-foot cell in federal prison.  Locked behind bars on a marijuana trafficking conviction, America’s growing acceptance of the drug is cold comfort to the 66-year-old who was handed two life sentences, plus 20 years — for a first-time conviction.  The sentence makes Knock one of 3,278 prisoners recently identified by the American Civil Liberties Union who are serving life without parole for nonviolent drug and property crimes. Nearly four in every five were convicted of crimes involving drugs, including marijuana.  Recreational use of marijuana is now legal in Colorado and Washington, and 15 other states have also eased restrictions.”
