Beyond bitcoin: Inside the cryptocurrency ecosystem

“So far, one feature has been more important than any other in helping any altcoin build user buy-in: honest, transparent, and relatively selfless behavior by its developers. Litecoin lead developer Charlie Lee made great efforts to ensure cryptocurrency supporters’ awareness and access at Litecoin’s launch, when any cryptocurrency is easiest to mine.  In part thanks to this push for fairness and openness, litecoin is now the second-biggest cryptocurrency after bitcoin. Creator Sunny King similarly released the sourcecode for his peercoin nine days before mining opened in August of 2012.  Peercoin is currently the third-ranked cryptocurrency.”

New York Property Firm Offers Steep Discount For Bitcoin Payments

A property listings site in the US has started giving a large discount to users who advertise on the site and pay in bitcoin. The listings site, called RentHop, is offering landlords and agents who advertise properties in New York a discount of up to 60% if they pay for their adverts in bitcoin. The site currently has about 87,000 listings for New York.  RentHop’s co-founder Lawrence Zhou said bitcoin payments would help solve some of the niggling problems in the New York property business, like tenants having to obtain a cashier’s check to pay the deposit on a lease.  Zhou added that bitcoin transactions also removed the possibility of chargebacks on credit card payments.”

Slovenia ‘Clarifies’ Position on Cryptocurrency Tax

“The ministry stressed that taxation of bitcoin income still warrants a review on an individual basis. In other words, it is necessary to determine who actually generates an income, and classify what sort of income is being generated.  The Ministry stressed that the current legislative framework contains no provisions applicable to businesses involved in bitcoin trading. There is a fair amount of ambiguity here, as the ministry cites two corporate income laws, so determining the tax base could be problematic. The statement concludes that the treatment of bitcoins in the accounting process varies on a case-to-case basis.”

India Central Bank warns against Bitcoin use

“The Reserve Bank of India, on Tuesday, warned the public against the use of virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, pointing out that users expose themselves to potential financial, legal and security related risks.  The public advisory comes after the borderless digital currency has begun to gain widespread acceptance in India, despite poor Internet penetration and a natural scepticism to assets not backed by tangible entities such as land.  In its list of potential risks, the apex bank highlights problems such as losses arising out of hacking, no sources of customer recourse and the general financial volatility surrounding Bitcoins.”

Entrepreneurs increasingly accepting ‘bitcoins’ in India

“Tarun Thadani, the proprietor of a vintage-themed pizza outlet in the posh Worli area of Mumbai, thinks he is making history. On Saturday, his restaurant Kolonial announced that its patrons can pay in bitcoins instead of rupees, thus laying claim to the title of being India’s first eatery to accept the new-age currency. ‘Right now, people are a bit sceptical about bitcoins, but it’s going to become big. I am testing the waters,’ said Thadani, 30, who is a bitcoin owner and a host to several bitcoin meetups at Kolonial. In Bangalore, the technology startup accelerator Microsoft Ventures Accelerator is doing its bit for bitcoin by lending its office space to host the country’s first Bitcoin meetup of 2014.”

Almost Every Passenger on Indian Flight Found Carrying 1kg of Gold

“Faced with curbs on gold imports and crash in international prices leaving it cheaper in other countries, gold houses and smugglers are turning to NRIs to bring in the yellow metal legally after paying duty. It was evident last week when almost every passenger on a flight from Dubai to Calicut was found carrying 1kg of gold, totalling up to 80kg. At Chennai airport, 13 passengers brought the legally permitted quantity of gold in the past one week.  ‘It’s not illegal. But the 80kg gold that landed in Calicut surprised us. We soon got information that two smugglers in Dubai and their links in Calicut were behind this operation, offering free tickets to several passengers,’ said an official.”

War on Drugs more about big business than curbing marijuana use

“Private prison interests have given nearly $200,000 to 79 of the 149 Oklahoma legislators since 2004. House Speaker T.W. Shannon (R-Lawton) was the No. 1 recipient of private prison-related donations totaling $34,950. That figure includes $22,500 contributed by three private prison companies to fund the 2013 Speaker’s Ball.  Meanwhile, Gov. Mary Fallin has enjoyed private prison support, which includes $33,608 in gifts and campaign contributions.  As the private prison industry gives to Oklahoma’s elected officials, it also receives plenty in return. Spending on private prisons increased from $57 million in 2004 to $73 million last fiscal year, said DOC spokesman Jerry Massie.”

Cannabinoids Lead to Leukemia Cancer Cell Destruction

“One new study, from researchers with Saint George’s University of London and published in Anticancer Research, reveals how various compounds within cannabis are able to work together to kill human leukemia cells.  The study looked at three non-psychoactive cannabinoids, including cannabidiol, cannabigerol, and cannabigevarin. These compounds were tested on two leukemia cell lines where they acted synergistically to fight the cancerous cells.  In total, six compounds were tested and each had anti-cancer properties as effective as those in THC. When combined with one another, the compounds had an even greater effect.”

Arizona Dispensaries Sold 2.5+ Tons of Medical Marijuana in First Year

“Arizona’s medical-marijuana dispensaries sold more than 2.5 tons of marijuana in the past 12 months, officials say.  From December 6th, 2012 — opening day for the state’s first state-authorized dispensary, Arizona Organix — to December 9th of this year, 5,279 pounds of marijuana were sold, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. The health department provided the numbers this morning following a New Times records request made last month.  Online records show 77 dispensaries are now open across Arizona, with a few more scheduled for openings in early 2014. Voters approved Arizona’s medical-marijuana law, which authorizes the shops, in a 2010 ballot initiative.”

Uruguay: Decline of the Green Revolution and the Future of Farming

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“We are happy to see the progress of Doug Bell’s project, as he is offering an alternative to securities investing and one that is an unusual asset class. Uruguay itself, meanwhile, continues to attract attention and was recently named the ‘country of the year’ by the Economist magazine. Often called the Switzerland of South America, it is being reported that there are forces at work trying to develop Uruguay into a kind of Latin American Silicon Valley that will draw clients from Europe.  The definitive change that is coming to Uruguay will happen because of the recent legalization of marijuana. In the meantime, Uruguay will continue to be known for its organic produce and meats.”
