Police chief, police captain, firefighter sentenced for child sex offenses

“The former Old Forge police chief left a courtroom in handcuffs Monday, after Lackawanna County Judge Vito Geroulo sentenced him to 18 months to four years in state prison for corruption of a minor – a first-degree misdemeanor – and failure to report child abuse.  Judge Geroulo also sentenced two other borough men, former police Captain Jamie Krenitsky and former volunteer firefighter Walter Chiavacci for indecent assault. Mr. Krenitsky, 35, received nine to 23 ½ months and Mr. Chiavacci, 48, received three to 18 months, both in county jail.  The judge ordered all three to register as sex offenders under Megan’s Law for the next 15 years.”

San Bernardino Police Sic Dog on Sleeping Old Woman

“San Bernardino Police sent a dog to viciously attack an 88-year-old woman as she slept in bed in her own home, the woman claims in court.  Katharina Lambert sued San Bernardino, Police Chief Robert Handy and Officers J. Castro, S. Aranda and J. Echevarria, in Federal Court.  Lambert says the three officers entered her home at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2013, allegedly in response to a silent burglar alarm. Without warrant or any pressing circumstances, Echevarria entered with a police dog, Lambert says.  Echevarria did not announce his entrance or warn that he was releasing a dog that might attack and bite, Lambert says in the lawsuit.”

Man sues two officers for $100 million after he was wrongfully jailed

“A Cincinnati man sued two Norwood police officers for $100 million after he was wrongfully jailed for nearly two months on felony cocaine charges even though video footage would have shown they had the wrong man.  Maurice Snow, 29, filed the federal civil rights lawsuit against a detective and lieutenant at the Norwood Police Department on Monday, accusing them of turning his life upside-down and recklessly violating his constitutional rights by detaining him without probable cause.  WCPO reporter Amy Wadas talked with Snow on the phone just one day after he filed the lawsuit. He told her he cannot find work or a decent place to live.”

Firefighters Refuse to Help Dying Man Because He Did Not Call 9-1-1

“Three different rotations of people knocked on the firehouse door requesting help for the 77-year-old, and all of them were rebuffed by the firefighters who repeated to each of them that they couldn’t respond unless someone called 911. Nearly 20 minutes later, help finally arrived thanks D.C. police officer who flagged an ambulance down. Mills died on the way to the hospital.  ‘There are no words to describe how this city has failed,’ his daughter told the Washington Post on Wednesday, prompting District authorities to investigate the 15 firefighters who are now being questioned for their lack of response during a time of emergency.”

Grand jury indicts police officer who killed unarmed man seeking help

“Less than a week after one grand jury declined to charge him, a different one has indicted a Charlotte, N.C., police officer for voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed man who was looking for help after a car crash.  Prosecutors resubmitted the case against Officer Randall Kerrick after learning not all 18 members of the original grand jury were present for last Tuesday’s vote. Kerrick, 28, a three-year veteran of the Charlotte police force, shot Jonathan Ferrell, 24, 10 times in a confrontation in September. Ferrell had crashed his car and staggered for help to a nearby home, where the resident called 911 to report a possible break-in.”
