Police get the tools they want; Britain loses the liberties it holds dear

“The far more worrying development is the unscrutinised rollout of the police automated numberplate recognition system (ANPR) for tracking vehicles, which currently stores 17bn images in its archive and is set to increase its capacity by 2018 to read and store 50-75 million separate vehicle sightings a day. Important to remember is that the decision to cover Britain’s motorways and town centres with cameras that track the movements of innocent citizens was never debated by parliament.  The system was cooked up between ‘twinned’ committees from the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers, which, incidentally, was a private company and immune from FOI requests.”

“There is a pack of 12 cops waiting to smash your f***ing faces in.”

“Adam described being at a protest in Fullerton on the previous Saturday to express his differing opinion of the wrongful verdict of acquittal of those two Fullerton cops who murdered Kelly Thomas.  As he held his sign and videotaped the happenings, he was encountered by police in riot gear, ordered to disperse and then thrown into a paddy wagon, when he didn’t move fast enough.  As he was being driven to the county facility by these ‘heroes in blue’, one of the ‘peacemakers’ who obviously was obeying policy, leaned over to Adam and a few others in the cage on wheels and said with evil malice in his voice, ‘There is a pack of 12 cops waiting to smash your fucking faces in.'”

Secret Military Training Blurs Line Between Police and Soldiers

“As the military transitions into a tech-heavy force, increasingly reliant on robots and drones, local police forces are looking less like law enforcement and more like heavily armored combat units. Now, it seems they are starting to train like them, as well.  A story reported on recent secret joint training missions between U.S. Army special forces and the Richland County (South Carolina) Sheriff’s Department.  The article describes training exercises being conducted by ‘unidentified units’ from Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. A spokesman for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department refused to identify who was participating in the exercise or why it was being carried out.”

Plunder-Lusting Quislings Seek to Repeal Posse Comitatus

“A bill before the Idaho State Legislature, HB 367, would effectively abolish the Posse Comitatus Act as it applies to law enforcement in the Gem State.  When authorized to act as a ‘state law enforcement agency,’ the Guard will be allowed to participate ‘in the sharing of property seized or forfeited and receive property and revenues…..’  This would allow any of the state’s 44 sheriffs to seek the assistance of the National Guard any time they anticipate resistance to a forfeiture action. After all, everybody in Idaho has guns, a fact that has been invoked by police officials across the state to justify the acquisition of combat-grade armored vehicles from the Pentagon.”

A Cop’s “Job”: Kill Without Cause or Consequences

“‘What they decided … was that Officer Randall Kerrick did his job,’ summarized his attorney, George Laughrun, after a grand jury in North Carolina refused to indict Kerrick for manslaughter in the death of Jonathan Ferrell. ‘Regretfully, it cost the life of Jonathan Ferrell. But he did his job.’  Some version of this formulaic response is uttered by cops, their superiors, or their attorneys anytime an officer is exonerated after an on-duty killing under dubious circumstances. In this case, the victim, an unarmed 24-year-old man with no criminal record, was shot ten times while he was asking the police for help.”

Jeffrey Tucker: Police Work Has Become a Racket

“Did I get in trouble for endangering people, meaning that my citation improved the social order by goading us all into safer behavior?  I don’t think so.  I’ll tell you what happened: I was taxed, which is to say I was robbed. This seems to be the major function of police work now, raising money for the government. In fact, it is something that police themselves have suggested as a way of forestalling budget cuts.  Police Chief Magazine suggested after the 2008 financial crisis a way to ‘help the survival of a city and maintain or expand police service through generating new revenue streams as a proactive approach to meet the fiscal crisis of today and the uncertain future of tomorrow.'”

Justin Bieber and “Resisting Arrest Without Violence”

“Bieber, who was reportedly drunk and uncooperative when stopped by a police officer, attempted to pull his arm away when the cop tried to take him into custody. Because of this reflex action (a healthy and predictable response to being grabbed by an armed and aggressive stranger) Bieber was hit with a charge that is remarkably commonplace in Florida.  The killers of Kelly Thomas successfully argued in court that the victim’s pathetic attempts at non-violent self-protection justified the use of lethal force to subdue him. This enrichment of the lethal impunity enjoyed by state-licensed aggressors in California will not be lost on their comrades on the other side of the continent.”

Half of U.S. prison sex crimes involve staff

“Nearly 9,000 incidents of sexual victimization against inmates in U.S. prisons and jails were reported in 2011, with roughly half of them involving corrections staff, according to a report by the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics.  The number of incidents showed a ‘significant increase’ over about 8,400 incidents reported in 2010 and 7,855 reported in 2009, it said. The year 2011 was the most recent cited in the bureau study, published on Thursday.  The number has been rising in each of the last five years, said the study, which defined sexual victimization as including non-consensual acts, abusive touching, threats, indecent exposure and harassment.”

“Cooperate” With the Police, Or Be Assaulted in Front of Your Children

“Rather than facing criminal charges or even the mildest form of administrative censure, Uhrig has been assigned to patrol Post Falls High School as a ‘School Resource Officer’ (or SRO). Given Uhrig’s proven propensity for criminal violence, and his demonstrated ignorance of – or contempt for – the Fourth Amendment, this would appear to be a singularly unsuitable assignment. That assessment assumes, of course, that the purpose of an SRO is to protect students from violence, rather than tutoring them about the supposed virtue of unconditional submission to ‘authority.’ The latter job is a perfect fit for an individual who reflexively assaults people who assert their rights.”

Smith & Wesson Ends Most CA Sales Due to Microstamping Regulation

“On January 22nd renowned gun maker Smith & Wesson joined Sturm, Ruger, & Co., by announcing it would cease California sales of its semi-automatic pistols due to microstamping requirements that went into effect last year.  Microstamping is a requirement that each firearm be fitted with a special firing pin that leaves a fingerprint on a bullet casing.  The cost of doing this would be passed on to consumers in higher prices. Moreover, the result of doing this would be yet another gun registry.  On top of these things, microstamping doesn’t even work–and least not all the time. There are proven problems with the durability of microstamps on firing pins.”
