US looks at ways to prevent spying on its spying

“The U.S. government is looking at ways to prevent anyone from spying on its own surveillance of Americans’ phone records.  As the Obama administration considers shifting the collection of those records from the National Security Agency to requiring that they be stored at phone companies or elsewhere, it’s quietly funding research to prevent phone company employees or eavesdroppers from seeing whom the U.S. is spying on, The Associated Press has learned.  Under the research, U.S. data mining would be shielded by secret coding that could conceal identifying details from outsiders and even the owners of the targeted databases, according to public documents and interviews.”

UK porn filter blocks League of Legends update for ‘sex’ in file name

“The anti-pornography firewall run by the UK’s four top internet providers has blocked the latest League of Legends update because it happens to contain the letters ‘s,’ ‘e’ and ‘x’ in a row in two of its file names, The Guardian reports. The filter dings the following two files, forcing the update to fail with a ‘file not found’ error (emphasis added): XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj.  The Guardian says that the only recourse for those affected is to contact their internet providers and switch off the filter. The firewall is a new program and this problem should be contained to anyone who has signed up for a new ISP this month only.”

Dutch court rules in favor of unblocking Pirate Bay as ban ‘ineffective’

“People in the Netherlands will soon have access to The Pirate Bay, one of the world’s most censored file-sharing websites, as a court in The Hague ruled that Dutch ISPs need to stop blocking the site after the ban proved ineffective against piracy.  The Court of The Hague released its verdict that two leading ISPs operating in the country – XS4All and Ziggo – no longer have to block access to file sharing website The Pirate Bay.  The court’s verdict was based on the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, which includes the ‘freedom to conduct a business’ and ‘right to property.’ Entrepreneurial freedom overrides property rights, the court ruled.”

Angry Birds Says It Didn’t Purposely Share Private Data With NSA

“Rovio, the Finnish software company behind the Angry Birds game, has announced it will ‘re-evaluate’ its relationship with advertising networks following revelations that the NSA and its UK counterpart GCHQ have the capability to ‘piggyback’ on the private user data they collect.  In a statement released in the wake of the story, Rovio’s chief executive said the company would examine its business relationships, but also called for the wider industry to respond to spy agencies’ use of commercial data traversing the web.  Rovio’s CEO referred to the need to balance the ability of websites to make money with user privacy amid the NSA revelations as ‘the most important conversation to be had’.”

Alfred McCoy: It’s About Blackmail, Not National Security

“For an imperial power losing its economic grip on the planet and heading into more austere times, the NSA’s latest technological breakthroughs look like a bargain basement deal when it comes to projecting power and keeping subordinate allies in line.  Even when disaster turned out to be attached to them, the NSA’s surveillance programs have come with such a discounted price tag that no Washington elite rejected them.  For well over a century, from the pacification of the Philippines in 1898 to trade negotiations with the European Union today, surveillance and its kissing cousins, scandal and scurrilous information, have been key weapons in Washington’s search for global dominion.”

For Narcos and Jamie Dimon, Crime Does Pay: Dimon Gets 77% Raise

“With around $20 billion in fines for civil and criminal violations, JPMorgan Chase is making history.  Of course, as most narcos know, you’ve got to factor in losing some money to making a lot of money.  That means the leaders of the so-called banks too big to fail — like their drug cartel counterparts — are doing just fine indeed. That is just the case with Jamie Dimon.  After a year of virtually non-stop settlements with the US government for various violations of regulations and the law (but no criminal indictments or personal fines against Dimon, or prosecuted criminal charges against JP Morgan Chase), his board felt that a 77 percent increase in his salary to $20 million a year was in order.”

Bitcoin Pioneers Arrested While Renegade Banking System Carries On

“Even if the Silk Road charges of true – they would amount to only a fraction of the money laundering activities of HSBC Bank.  HSBC set up an entire subsidiary firm with the specific intention of using it to launder the money of Mexican drug cartels.  It spirited over $7bn of the stuff between 2001 and 2007. HSBC were found guilty on all charges – but no executives were arrested, none of the bank’s branches, operations or websites were closed down.  In fact, HSBC were able to settle it all with a fine, paid by the company, worth just 14% of the profits the bank made in the same year.”

Charlie Shrem Kidnapped. Which Bitcoin Entrepreneurs Are Next?

“The case against Shrem is an embarrassment to the US government. The entire world should point-and-laugh at the inexplicable wasting of resources this is. To go after Shrem here-and-now is to demonstrate the government is not interested in money laundering or the drug trade. It’s interested in upholding the status quo.  I have stated it in the past and will state it again.  If you intend to operate a financially related bitcoin operation the last place you should base that business out of is the US.  Any country other than the US is safer for those trying to create wealth and jobs by being on the leading edge of the cryptocurrency revolution.”
