Father Spends 11 Months In Jail, Sues LAPD for Murder Framing

“A 24-year-old father is suing Los Angeles police officers for allegedly framing him for murder and paying a homeless pair $10,000 to falsely testify against him at trial, according to a lawsuit.  Roy Galvan, who was acquitted by a jury, spent 13 months in county jail awaiting trial in the 2011 murder of a reputed gang member in South Los Angeles.  It accuses LAPD Officers Miguel Terrazas, David Nunn and Richard Arciniega of destroying evidence in the case, falsifying reports and bribing witnesses for statements, false arrest and malicious prosecution, among other claims of misconduct and civil rights violations.”

Family of Woman Who Led Cops on Capitol Car Chase Suing Police

“Police say Miriam Carey rammed her car into a White House checkpoint barricade on the afternoon of Oct. 3. She fled the scene to avoid law enforcement, leading officers through the streets of D.C. toward the Capitol.  The Capitol building was placed on lock-down and Capitol Police issued a shelter-in-place order following reports of shots fired near the building.  A Capitol Police officer and a Secret Service agent suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident.  Police shot and killed Carey just outside the Hart Senate Office Building, where many senators have their offices. Carey was a dental hygienist whose 1-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle during the chase.”

Officer charged with raping woman while on duty and in uniform

“A Worcester police officer has been charged with raping a woman while on duty and in uniform.  Officer Rajat Sharda was released on $7,500 bail after pleading not guilty Tuesday in district court to charges including aggravated rape, extortion by a police officer, and witness intimidation.  He has been placed on paid administrative leave by the department.  Police say the 32-year-old Sharda asked the woman ‘what she would be willing to do to avoid being arrested,’ before sexually assaulting her last August. He also allegedly threatened her to keep her quiet.  The woman lodged her complaint in November. Sharda was arrested Monday at the conclusion of the police investigation.”

Deputy charged with pepper spraying teen’s pizza during traffic stop

“A sheriff’s deputy in Orange County will be arraigned Monday for allegedly pepper-spraying a teenager’s pizza during a traffic stop.  The teen, authorities said, and a group of friends later became sick after eating the pepper-spray tainted pizza.  Authorities charged Juan Tavera, 30, with one misdemeanor count of assault or battery by a public officer. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office.  Tavera, who is on paid administrative leave, is a six-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, stationed in Laguna Hills. The teen called authorities after becoming suspicious of his earlier encounter with Tavera.”

Officer kills family’s dog while ‘searching’ across front yards

“Police said the officer — a one-year veteran of the force who was not identified — was canvassing a neighborhood looking for witnesses around 4 p.m. Saturday. When the officer went to a home in 900 block of Lombardee Circle in Glen Burnie the dog — a male Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Vern — ‘confronted’ the officer in the front yard, police said. The officer then fired his weapon twice, killing the dog, police said.  The family said the officer wanted to interview a neighbor and was walking across the front yards of homes on the street when the shooting happened. The Reeves family was not involved in the burglary investigation that brought the officer to their neighborhood.”

“McKee pulled Payne from his pickup and ‘violently threw him onto the concrete pavement of the parking lot,’ the lawsuit alleges. Then the trooper grabbed Payne’s left arm, wrenched it behind his back and slammed Payne’s face into the pavement, the complaint alleges.  Lashmet jumped on Payne’s back and pushed his face into the concrete parking lot, according to the complaint. Officer admits she didn’t write down ‘snowball’ in weapons charge

“An NYPD officer admitted Wednesday that she didn’t note in an arrest report on five young Bronx men that the cop they allegedly attacked — transit Sgt. Adonis Ramirez — claimed he was hit with a snowball.   ‘No,’ Officer Paola Diaz answered when asked if the word ‘snowball’ appeared anywhere in the report charging the five with criminal possession of a weapon  Diaz also could not explain why she wrote that one of the suspects, Anthony Aquino, was also charged with disorderly conduct and harassment.  The charges against the five were later dropped.”

City officer only charged with shooting after 9 day ‘extensive inquiry’

“Claudie Lowery, of Pleasant Hope Road, Fairmont, was arrested on Jan. 22 on charges of shooting at his neighbor, and pointing a gun at his mother and brother, on the evening of Jan. 13, according to an arrest warrant.  Lowery was off-duty at the time and no one was injured, according to Erich Hackney, who investigated the case for the District Attorney’s Office.  According to Hackney, Lowery wasn’t arrested until nine days after the investigation began because criminal charges involving law enforcement and school employees require a more extensive inquiry ‘to determine whether it’s more likely than not the incident occurred’ than other cases.”

Once Again, Police Who Shot at Innocents Will Get Their Guns Back

“Without any warning, an LAPD officer aimed his revolver at the driver side cabin and fired a shot. Within seconds, 8 LAPD officers would fire a total of 103 bullets at their vehicle. ‘We are being shot at, we are being shot at!’ the younger woman screamed. She would emerge unhurt. Two bullets hit her elderly mother in the back.  A civilian review reports that ‘the investigation revealed there were ballistic impacts located on seven homes and nine civilian vehicles, which consisted of both gunshots and shotgun pellets.’ They could’ve easily killed someone else, or one another.  A year would pass before these 8 officers learned their fate. Their punishment? Retraining.”

Can laws punishing gun-wielding criminals apply to a police officer?

“The high court is considering the case of former Ottawa Hills Officer Thomas White, who shot and paralyzed motorcyclist Michael McCloskey after a traffic stop May 23, 2009. White has maintained that he fired because he feared Mr. McCloskey, who had his back turned to him, was reaching for a weapon. Mr. McCloskey was unarmed.  The impact of the case to police officers beyond Ottawa Hills prompted both the state and national Fraternal Order of Police to get involved.  ‘You have to understand that a police officer acting and discharging his service weapon in the line of duty is just fundamentally different from the armed robber holding up a gas station,’ the unions’ Columbus attorney said.”
