Cop sentenced to six years for fatally shooting ‘PBS NewsHour’ driver

“Prosecutors charged Patterson with first-degree murder, saying that after he and Dawkins got into a dispute on Lynhaven Drive, he left to retrieve his gun, returned and shot Dawkins. Witnesses testified that they saw Patterson leave after an initial confrontation.  In his testimony, Patterson said he left only to get handcuffs, mistakenly believing that he could detain Dawkins even though he was not in Arlington County and out of his jurisdiction.  Patterson said that when he returned, Dawkins charged at him with something in his hand. Investigators later found that Dawkins was intoxicated and carrying a knife, but the weapon was folded in his pocket during the shooting.”

Officer arrested for stealing jewelry while investigating store robbery

“Pembroke Pines police arrested one of their own officers, after surveillance video captured him stealing a watch, as he investigated a crime at a jewelry store Wednesday.  Nine-year-veteran Kevin Burgs was at Jared’s The Galleria Of Jewelry, 11077 Pines Boulevard, after two suspects took thousands in merchandise from the store Wednesday. Glass was shattered, the watches were at reach.  Surveillance video caught Burgs, as he took a watch valued at nearly $800, police said. He was charged with grand theft and arrested. Early Thursday morning, he posted a $1,000 bond and walked out of jail.”

Champlin couple get $90,000 after police steal shoes off their porch

“A Champlin couple won a $90,000 award from a U.S. District Court jury after police snatched a pair of Skechers shoes off their porch during an illegal search while they slept.  ‘It should send a chill down anyone’s spine,’ said homeowner Ron Rosen Thursday in an interview about the case, which also included a search of his house two weeks later. ‘I did nothing to precipitate this except live in proximity to where a burglary occurred.’  The city disputes the judge’s finding that the porch search was illegal and said it will contest the jury award.”

King County sheriff’s deputy fired over threats to news editor

“A King County sheriff’s deputy who threatened to arrest an editor for The Stranger weekly newspaper during a sidewalk confrontation in July has been fired by Sheriff John Urquhart.  Deputy Patrick Saulet, a 27-year veteran with a troubled disciplinary history, was terminated at the end of the business day Monday, according to Urquhart.  Urquhart found that Saulet ‘took exception’ to Dominic Holden, The Stranger’s news editor, lawfully doing his job on public property, according to a Jan. 30 disciplinary letter sent to Saulet.  Saulet was demoted from sergeant last year after Urquhart found he had harassed a family in a vehicle that had made a wrong turn.”

Cop on Christie detail caught shoplifting

“A New Jersey state trooper shoplifted gun accessories and attempted to get out of his arrest by telling a Pennsylvania police officer that he would lose his job as a member of Gov. Chris Christie’s security detail if charges were filed, a police chief told The Associated Press on Monday.  Trooper William Carvounis, 35, of North Brunswick, N.J., was at a Cabela’s sporting goods store on Jan. 8 when he put several items in his cargo pants pockets – including some handgun grips, a pistol magazine and a hat.  While Carvounis paid for some items at checkout, he allegedly did not pay for the concealed items, which were worth $267.38.”

Would You Vote for This Guy?

“Everything went smoothly until the reporter asked Grimm about a federal investigation into possible finance violations in his 2010 election campaign.  At first, Grimm just walked away. But he soon returned. In a video you can watch here, he can be heard telling the reporter, ‘I’ll break you in half, like a boy.’ Grimm also told the reporter, ‘Let me be clear to you: you ever do that to me again, I’ll throw you off this f*****g balcony.’  So much for ‘freedom of the press.’ Or for intelligent discourse by our elected representatives on the urgent matters of the day.  Grimm defended himself by saying, ‘I doubt that I am the first member of Congress to tell off a reporter, and I am sure I won’t be the last.'”

Trooper who ticketed cop for speeding sues cops for harassment

“Not long after she made that traffic stop, the harassment began. Random telephone calls on her cell phone. Some were threats and some were prank calls, including orders for pizza. Unfamiliar vehicles and police cars sat idling in her cul-de-sac. She was afraid to open her mailbox.  Watts suspected her private driver’s license information was being accessed by fellow officers, so she made a public records request with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. It turned out she was right: over a three-month period, at least 88 law enforcement officers from 25 different agencies accessed Watts’ driver’s license information more than 200 times, according to her lawyer.”

Feds May Require Cars to ‘Talk’ to Each Other

“After years of study, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it will begin taking steps that could eventually require all new cars and trucks to be equipped with so-called vehicle-to-vehicle, or V2V, technology, calling it a key to saving lives while also improving traffic flow in major urban areas.  At its most advanced, V2V technology could become critical to the development of the autonomous vehicles that many automotive manufacturers hope to put into production by the beginning of the next decade.  The feds plan to release a more complete report on the research program later this month and will announce proposed rules before the end of the Obama administration.”

Federal judge rules drivers allowed to flash headlights as warning

“A federal judge in Missouri ruled this week held that drivers have a First Amendment right to flash their headlights to warn other motorists of nearby police and speed traps.  The order by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey in St. Louis on Monday stems from a lawsuit filed by Ellisville resident Michael Elli. In 2012, Elli flashed his headlights to warn oncoming vehicles of a radar set up by police in the town of Ellisville.  A flash of headlights is a common way motorists communicate to oncoming drivers of either a dangerous situation or the presence of police — in essence, a warning to slow down.”

Distracted police officers cause hundreds of crashes in metro Denver

“On-duty police officers blowing through red lights, driving too fast and smashing into innocent bystanders. An exclusive FOX31 Denver investigation uncovered a widespread pattern of traffic accidents caused by distracted on-duty officers. [..]  Police radio dispatch audio logs, acquired by FOX31 Denver under the Colorado Open Record Act, are void of any request to obtain medical treatment for Tucker on scene.  She says she called the police department a few days later to ask about them paying for her bent bike handle bars and some medical bills she incurred after the accident.  Boulder police sent her a $50 citation in the mail for failing to have a light on her bicycle.”
