Kentucky Police Set Up ‘Eating While Driving’ Checkpoints

“Instead of searching for actual criminals, Kentucky State Police will be on the lookout for people who eat while they drive as part of Operation RAID, which will include checkpoints targeting ‘distracted drivers,’ despite the fact that eating while driving is not banned in Kentucky.  Reports concerning the program also made no mention whatsoever of the fact that such checkpoints are clearly a violation of the 4th Amendment.  ‘Roving patrols and an increase in safety checkpoints’ will characterize a ‘blanket campaign’ that ‘may not work well in certain areas,’ acknowledged Captain Nathan Kent, KSP Post One Commander.”

UK enforces terrorism law which bans public from criticising the govt

“A British citizen was held for days without charge in a London mental hospital under little-known laws which allow the police to arrest and detain anybody who voices criticism against politicians or celebrities.  The Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (FTAC) was quietly set up to identify individuals who they claim pose a direct threat to VIPs including the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the Royal Family.  It was given sweeping powers to check more than 10,000 suspects’ files to identify mentally unstable potential ‘killers and stalkers’ with a fixation against public figures.  Using these powers, the unit can legally detain people for an indefinite period without trial, criminal charges or even evidence.”

US prepares for tank battles in Europe

Canada Signs U.S. FATCA Deal, IRS To Get Data

It’s about to get worse, now that the two nations inked a tax-information sharing agreement. The broad deal is one of 22 intergovernmental agreements (so-called IGAs) the U.S. has signed to crack down on tax evasion.  FATCA is the U.S. law that requires banks everywhere to pony up information on Americans or face serious sanctions. The sanctions are so bad that virtually every institution or every nation seems to be striking a deal. Indeed, it is not exaggeration to say that banks and countries everywhere are scrambling, trying to appease the U.S. taxing authorities.”

Americans Renouncing Citizenship Up 221% In 2013

“Record numbers of U.S. citizens and permanent residents are giving up their citizenship or residency. For all the immigrant arrivals the trickle the other direction is increasing. The number is still small, with the ‘published’ expatriates for the quarter 630 for the last quarter of 2013.  That brings the total number to 2,999 for all of 2013. The previous record high for a year was 1,781 set in 2011. It’s a 221% increase over the 932 who left in 2012. You can call it a shaming or a public record, but the Treasury Department is required to publish a quarterly list of Americans who renounced their U.S. Citizenship or terminated their long-term U.S. residency.”

Civilian drone deaths triple in Afghanistan, UN agency finds

“The report, by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Unama), found that drone strikes accounted for at least a third of all civilian deaths in air strikes last year. Unama notes that it is sometimes difficult to establish which type of aircraft carried out a strike, so the true total could be higher.  The UK and US are the only countries to operate armed drones in the conflict. A December 2012 report by the Bureau found that the two forces had carried out over 1,000 drone strikes in the country in the previous five years. British drones have carried out over a fifth of all these strikes, despite having a much smaller fleet.”

Greenwald: Use of NSA metadata to find drone targets kills civilians

“The most common tactic employed by the NSA is known as ‘geolocation’, which entails locking on to the SIM card or handset of a suspected terrorist. A former drone sensor operator with the US Air Force, Brandon Bryant, told the Intercept that using the metadata led to inaccuracies that killed civilians.  The NSA uses a program called Geo Cell to follow potential targets and often do not verify whether the carrier of the phone is the intended target of the strike.  ‘It’s really like we’re targeting a cell phone. We’re not going after people – we’re going after their phones, in the hopes that the person on the other end of that missile is the bad guy,’ Bryant told the Intercept.”
