Who actually develops Linux? The answer might surprise you

“As for why Linux is now mostly developed by well-paid engineers, the possible reasons are myriad. The most obvious and compelling reason is that these big companies have a commercial interest in the continued good health of Linux. 10 years ago, Linux was the plaything of hobbyists and supercomputer makers — today, it powers everything from smartphones (Android) to wireless routers to set-top boxes. The continuing commercial interest in Linux is highlighted by another statistic from The Linux Foundation report: In mid-2011, only 191 companies were involved in the Linux kernel; by the end of 2013, that number was up to 243.”

Reuters Explains the Prevalence of Central Bank Money Printing

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“This Reuters article (somewhat surprisingly) makes a good point about central banking policy … that lying is part of necessary bank policy. It also makes a point we’ve been making for months now: While a good deal of discussion will focus on ‘tapering’ and other kinds of tightening, that’s probably not what is going to be happening in the near future.  We are living in a kind of parallel universe where officials create a narrative and the mainstream media covers it – but none of it is true. We will continue to read about money tightening but if you look closely there will always be contradictory indicators as there are currently. Little is real about this ‘recovery’ except the constant stimulation.”

Outernet: WiFi for the World from Outer Space

“Outernet consists of a constellation of hundreds of low-cost, miniature satellites in Low Earth Orbit. Each satellite receives data streams from a network of ground stations and transmits that data in a continuous loop until new content is received. In order to serve the widest possible global audience, the entire constellation utilizes UDP-based multicasting over WiFi. Although still not common, WiFi multicasting is a proven technology, especially when the data requires only one hop to reach the recipient.  Citizens from all over the world, through SMS and feature-phone apps, participate in building the information priority list.”

$350 million NASA project completed, then mothballed

NASA is supposed to build machines that launch into space, not structures that stay grounded on Earth and send spending into the stratosphere.  But that is exactly what is happening this year as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration completes the $350 million rocket-engine testing A-3 tower at its research facility in Mississippi. There is just one problem: The space exploration agency doesn’t want it.  ‘Because the Constellation Program was cancelled in 2010 the A-3’s unique testing capabilities will not be needed and the stand will be mothballed upon completion,’ NASA’s internal watchdog, the inspector general, said this month.”

Tough Lessons for the Next Generation

“I wish Dad were here today to tell us what he thinks about events that have come to pass since then — the tech wreck of 2000, the housing bust of 2006, the debt crisis of 2008 and the massive Fed money printing ever since.  The fact remains that no one can predict the future with precision. The best we can do is prepare prudently, and that’s what you should do too.  Never forget the key factor that has always sustained prudent investors through thick and thin — SAFETY. Always favor lower risk investments, taking bigger risks strictly with money you can afford to lose.”

Bill Bonner: Why the Fed’s ‘Taper’ Won’t Work

Bill-Bonner2

“The Fed had little choice. It has to pretend to go straight at least for a month or two more. Otherwise, it won’t have a shred of credibility left. And so far, so good. It looks like stocks will close the month of January down only 3%. Not catastrophic.  The Fed will continue attending its Counterfeiters Anonymous meetings – until the market really cracks. Then it will roll up its sleeves and get out the paper and ink. Janet Yellen will not want to preside over a crashing market any more than Ben Bernanke did.  Yes, the Fed has broken the US economy and its markets. Now, it owns them.  It can no longer permit the stock and bond markets to do what comes naturally to them – correct their mistakes.”

Bill Bonner: Is the Greatest Bull Market of All Time Now Over?

Bill-Bonner2

“Something important happened in the early 1980s. The healthy economy of the postwar period split in two – one real… one unreal.  In one, people got rich. No special knowledge or skills were required. You just had to buy US stocks and wait. If you put in $100,000 in 1982, you’d have about $1,500,000 today.  Or you could have made about the same amount from the bond market. Again, no sweat. But better even than buying stocks and bonds – much better – was selling them. This created a new class of rich people. A financial elite who got MBAs or degrees in math and finance and then went to work for Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Merrill Lynch and other Wall Street firms.”

Imran Hussain on Frontier Investing and the UAE Tax-Free Zone

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

When you set up your business properly in the UAE, you can avoid taxes so long as you are involved in international business. It is a significant advantage and many are interested in taking advantage of it. I relocated almost 1,800 companies and individuals in only four years.  [..] China and Asia will be leading the way economically in the future, though on the technology front, the US should retain its lead. France is having a hard time and a lot of French are leaving because tax bills are going up to 70 percent. Many French who can afford it are going to Switzerland.”

MyRA: “A Start To A Secure Retirement”, Promises Treasury Secretary

logo3

“You didn’t think the US could at first slowly, and then all of a sudden, expropriate retirement accounts and invest them in the ‘no risk, guaranteed return‘ MyRA Ponzi scheme introduced by Obama during the State of the Union address without lots of behavior-modifying indoctrination in the ‘friendly press’ first now did you? Sure enough, here is the first major propaganda salvo, coming from none other than the US Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, which will be published tomorrow across the McClatchy media empire.”

Hackers steal Western Michigan University professor’s paycheck

“A hacker had gotten into Cool’s WMU account and changed the routing number for his payments, he said, sending $1,518.62 to a bank in Utah. The crime was traced to a computer in New Mexico, Cool said he was told by detectives at the Western Michigan University Department of Public Safety. There was $11.08 left in the Utah account, which is all Cool has gotten back of his paycheck.  On Dec. 20, WMU issued him a paycheck advance, Cool said, which he is paying back in four installments. However, he said he believes the university should reimburse him for his loss, since it was its system that was hacked.”
