The burgeoning underground economy

“Recently in England, there was an uproar among customers of the HSBC bank when it ‘imposed a restriction blocking customers from withdrawing large amounts of money from their own accounts, unless they could provide the bank with a ‘good reason’ for it.’  It’s highly likely that HSBC’s issues go far deeper than a capricious desire to inconvenience customers. But it underscores a very uncomfortable fact: When you deposit money into a bank, you relinquish control over it. You have, in fact, made a loan to the bank. And short of calling the loan by closing the account, the bank (not you) gets to decide when – and if – they will pay you back.”

Chase Bans Cash Deposits Without ID Over Money-Laundering Risks

“In a bid to close potential money laundering loopholes, JPMorgan Chase tells FOX Business it is set to roll out a new policy that requires customers who want to make a cash deposit to show identification and be listed on the actual account.  It is believed that the New York-based financial giant would be the first big bank to enact such a change. Chase tellers are expected to begin asking customers for ID when making cash deposits on February 1, but the policy is not expected to be strictly enforced until March 3, Chase told FOX Business. ‘We are making this policy change for cash deposits only to combat misuse of accounts, including money laundering,’ a Chase spokesperson said.”

Washington State Edges Closer to Taxing Drivers by the Mile

“Lawmakers in Washington state are edging closer to implementing a new system that would monitor and tax drivers based on miles driven, under a proposal supposedly centered around transportation funding sustainability.  In a dizzying twist of logic, the Commission and DOT blame the prevalence of fuel-efficient cars as the reason the state now needs a per-mile tax, arguing that ‘the move to cleaner, smarter vehicles must be accompanied by a change in the way we pay for our roads.’  Last week, a committee set up by the Transportation Commission, after concluding a $1.4 million study, reported the fee could generate upwards of $3 billion.”

Papers Please: Colorado Cops Declare War on Super Bowl

“Police in Fort Collins, Colorado, are requesting all residents to register their Super Bowl parties, complete with threats of force. The registration page warns that a noise complaint will result in a cease and desist order as well as possible citations, arrests, jail time, and hefty fines. If you register, your party is given a warning and a 20 minute window to disperse before the police arrive. The registration process consists of the party host meeting with the authorities in person. The host must present valid identification to prove that they are over the age of 18 and provide two phone numbers at which they can be reached. Police may also ask for confirmation on when the party is scheduled.”

‘Welcome to the United States of paranoia’

“‘This is not some far-out Orwellian scenario,’ wrote the late William Safire of The New York Times in 2002, in the panicky aftermath of 9/11. ‘Here is what will happen to you: Every purchase you make with a credit card, every magazine subscription you buy and medical prescription you fill, every Web site you visit and e-mail you send or receive . . . will go into what the Defense Department describes as ‘a virtual, centralized grand database.’ ’  Twelve years on, this is the world we live in, but worse. Through a combination of fear, cowardice, political opportunism and bureaucratic metastasis, the erstwhile land of the free has been transformed into a nation of closely watched subjects.”

Free Market Healthcare in the Former Eastern Bloc

“To be honest, most Eastern European countries still have a very centrally planned health system, but if you look at Western Europe, most countries—except the Netherlands and Switzerland—have heavily centrally planned health systems themselves. Some more, some less.  There are a couple of very interesting examples in Eastern Europe, of what privatisation and deregulation of healthcare has achieved. I would like to highlight those, because they are also interesting for people from Western countries to get really good ammunition for arguments in why we need more markets and healthcare. Why do people benefit from more markets in healthcare?”

Powers-That-Be Secretly Terrified Of People, Pretend They’re In Control

“Part of the reason that our actions are more powerful than we think is that courage is contagious. So is the ability to think.  And a recent study shows that when only 10% of a population have strongly-held beliefs, their belief will often be adopted by the majority of the society.  True, governments worldwide are cracking down on liberty with the iron fist of repression.  But some argue that this is actually a sign that we are winning.  Indeed, the use of heavy-handed tactics – taking the velvet glove off of the iron fist – could backfire, as it will show the ’emperor’s ruthlessness’ for all to see.”

Terror Defendant Challenges Evidence Gathered by NSA Spying

“A U.S. terrorism defendant who was formally notified that he was spied on by the NSA filed a challenge to the constitutionality of the surveillance today, in a case likely to be litigated all the way to the Supreme Court.  Jamshid Muhtorov, a native of Uzbekistan who immigrated to Colorado, is one of only two criminal defendants the government has conceded was charged on the basis of evidence scooped up by the NSA’s surveillance programs. The Supreme Court last year rejected a suit challenging the law because the civil rights groups and others who brought the case could not prove their communications were intercepted, and hence didn’t have ‘standing’ to sue.”

Forget Metadata … The NSA Is Spying On EVERYTHING

“The NSA’s spying on everyone’s metadata can tell them just about everything about us … and it violates our Constitutional right to freedom of association.  But people are getting distracted from the big picture by focusing on metadata.  As just one example, there is substantial evidence from top NSA and FBI whistleblowers that the government is recording the content of our calls and emails … word-for-word.  So what should we make of the government’s denials that it records content?  Given that the government has been caught lying about spying again and again, I’m not sure how much weight we should give to such denials.”

Spy Agencies Work On Psychologically Profiling Everyone

“Newly-released documents from Edward Snowden show that the NSA and other spy agencies are tracking people’s psychological and lifestyle traits such as sexual preference, extroversion-versus-introversion, and whether people are leaders or followers.”
