The Most Important Takeaways From the Ex-TSA Screener’s Exposé

“In an article for Politico Magazine, former TSA screener Jason Harrington exposed the endemic corruption which infests the federal agency, including how TSA workers laughed at naked images of passengers, targeted attractive women and harassed travelers who didn’t display the proper attitude.  Although most of his revelations were already known (we were labeled ‘conspiracy theorists’ for saying the same thing), for guy who saw it with his own eyes every day from the inside to go public with this kind of information is huge. Given that Harrington’s article is lengthy, we’ve summarized the key points with relevant quotes from the piece below.”

Is Crazed Super Bowl Security a Taste of America To Come?

“In the run-up to Super Bowl XLVIII (just be happy they don’t use Egyptian numerals), the New York City Police Department is deploying an ‘amazing arsenal of security initiatives,’ including 200 ‘temporary’ surveillance cameras to ensure that dirty deeds remain undone at the big game. That’s remarkable, since City Hall in the rotten apple is actually about 11 miles from the site of the kickoff at MetLife Stadium, which is in East Rutherford, New Jersey. But never fear, security at the the Super Bowl itself promises to make attendance at football’s championship game an awful lot like spending several hours at a very cold TSA checkpoint—with some watery beer.  Get used to it America.”

How federal agents became the movie industry’s copyright enforcers

“What brought them to an Ohio shopping mall to jump an unsuspecting local nerd?  In 2008, Congress passed the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property, or PRO-IP Act. Suddenly, protecting the trademarks and copyrights of American companies became a huge priority for a number of law enforcement agencies, including ICE.  Soon, ICE was enforcing American intellectual property rights all over the globe. In 2009, the agency arrested 266 people in IP investigations, busting people who sell counterfeit movies, stream pirated content on websites, and sell licensed NFL gear. ICE more than doubled that number of arrests over the next two years.”

Frothing Panic On School Bus Over ‘Power Ranger’ Toy Gun

“A school bus driver in Auburn, Maine, stopped his vehicle and immediately called police after over hearing a student on board say the word ‘rifle’.  The driver, from Sherwood Heights Elementary School, opted to call in the cops rather than question the child himself.  When the Auburn police arrived, they discovered a toy ‘Power Rangers’ gun inside the backpack of one of the students, according to Superintendent Katy Grondin.  Referring to the school’s policy on weapons, the Superintendent stated that it prohibits ‘anything that could be perceived as real. We tell students, ‘To you it’s a toy, but it’s not appropriate.””

11-Year-Old Girl Banned From Selling Cupcakes By Bureaucrats

“Her name is Chloe Stirling and her crime was doing something that we used to applaud young people in America for doing.  Instead of sitting on her sofa and watching television all day, she actually started her own business.  And it turned out there her little business started thriving.  In fact, it started doing so well that a local newspaper took notice of it.  Well, that is when the control freaks swooped in and took her business away and banned her from selling any more cupcakes.  The really sad thing is that people are being paid to do this with our tax dollars.  All over America, little entrepreneurs are having their lemonade stands shut down and are being banned from selling Girl Scout cookies.”

State crime labs are incentivized to get false convictions

“In jurisdictions with this practice the crime lab receives a sum of money for each conviction of a given type.  Several state statutory schemes require defendants to pay crime laboratory fees upon conviction.  Illinois crime labs receive fees upon convictions for sex offenses, controlled substance offenses, and those involving driving under the influence. Mississippi crime labs require crime laboratory fees for various conviction types, including arson, aiding suicide, and driving while intoxicated. Similar provisions exist in Alabama, New Mexico, Kentucky, New Jersey, Virginia, and, until recently, Michigan. Other states have broadened the scope even further.”

The worst state budget gimmicks of 2013

“State Budget Solutions has been keeping an eye on the bag of tricks employed by legislators and other budget officials. These budget gimmicks hide the true cost of government and set up states for fiscal calamity down the road. In 2013, not much has changed, though some states have attempted to fix gimmicks they employed in the past. Here are a few of the most ‘popular’ gimmicks (and even some solutions to the gimmicks) that we’ve come across in 2013.”

Is your money safe at the bank? Economist says ‘no’, withdraws $1m

“Last week I had over $1,000,000 in a checking account at Bank of America. Next week, I will have $10,000.  Why am I getting in line to take my money out of Bank of America? Because of Ben Bernanke and Janet Yellen, who officially begins her term as chairwoman on Feb. 1.  Let me explain: Currently, I receive zero dollars in interest on my $1,000,000. The reason I had the money in Bank of America was to keep it safe. However, the potential cost to keeping my money in Bank of America is that the bank may be unwilling or unable to return my money.”
