Why It Took More Than 30 Years to Confirm Vitamin C Fights Cancer

“An article in a respected scientific journal confirmed what researchers have known for decades: High-dose vitamin C injections boost the effectiveness of traditional cancer therapies.  The mainstream media acted surprised. But this is old news: In the 1970s, two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling published research linking vitamin C injections to the shrinkage of malignant tumors.  You might think that the FDA – the agency set up to ‘protect’ us from dangerous or ineffective drugs – would have immediately ordered clinical tests to confirm the discovery. Quite the opposite. [..] For the last 30-plus years, official government policy has been that vitamin C isn’t an effective cancer therapy.”

Banks Face Deadline to Upgrade ATMs From Windows XP

“There are 420,000 ATMs in the U.S., and on April 8, a deadline looms for nearly all of them that underscores how sluggishly the nation’s cash delivery system moves forward. That’s the day Microsoft cuts off tech support for Windows XP, meaning that ATMs running the software will no longer receive regular security patches and won’t be in compliance with industry standards.  Microsoft’s 12-year-old Windows XP dominates the ATM market, powering more than 95 percent of the world’s machines and a similar percentage in the U.S.  ATMs whose operators ignore the deadline will continue to function; they’ll just become more vulnerable to malware and other attacks.”

Introducing the LocalBitcoins ATM

“We are happy to announce the first production batch of LocalBitcoins ATM’s. The ATM allows both buying and selling BTC, and the cost is about half of that the cheapest model currently on the market. It also doesn’t require internet connection by default, which makes it more robust and cost-effective than the competiting models.  You can easily buy and sell bitcoins from LocalBitcoins ATM using your LocalBitcoins wallet.  The ATM can be programmed to support over 100 different currencies. Very beneficial is the bank note recycler, which reduces maintenance needs for the machine.”

First U.S. bitcoin ATMs to open soon in Seattle, Austin

“Robocoin said on Tuesday that later this month it will install the first automated teller machines in the United States that let users buy and sell bitcoin, the latest step into the mainstream for the digital currency.  The kiosks, to be installed in Seattle, and Austin, Texas, are similar to ATMs but have scanners to read government-issued identification such as a driver’s license or a passport to confirm users’ identities.  The ATMs will allow people to swap bitcoin for cash, or deposit cash to buy more bitcoin by transferring funds to or from a virtual wallet on their smartphones.”

Bitcoin Processors Reconsider Marijuana Stance After FinCEN Ruling

“FinCEN indicated that financial services companies can now work with marijuana-related businesses in states where the drug has been legalized for medical or recreational purposes. This is provided it is ‘in a manner consistent with their obligations to know their customers and report possible criminal activity’.  However, while the announcement opens the door for all manner of financial services providers, from banks to credit cards to bitcoin payment processors, to potentially serve the industry, bitcoin payment businesses are split about a potential path forward.”

MIT to New Jersey: Back off our students

“MIT President L. Rafael Reif says he and MIT are standing behind students threatened by New Jersey with legal action if they don’t turn over detailed information about a ‘proof of concept’ project involving the online currency Bitcoin.  ‘I want to make it clear that the students who created Tidbit have the full and enthusiastic support of MIT. Chancellor Cindy Barnhart and Provost Marty Schmidt met with the students yesterday. They and General Counsel Greg Morgan also spoke with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which is providing to the students, pro bono, the independent legal representation that they need.'”

Cryptocurrencies Gaining Popularity in India’s Major Cities

“Bangalore already has two meet-up groups with over 500 active members. One of the groups, the Bangalore Bitcoin Creativity Crew also met last weekend. It was organised by Benson Samuel, an early adopter of bitcoin in India.  ‘Across India I do believe that we have crossed over 1,000 members who regularly attend the meet-ups,’ said Samuel. ‘Step one in the direction that I am pushing is to start meet-ups in as many cities in India as possible.’  The other meet-up group in India’s Silicon Valley is organised by Vikram Nikkam and Sathvik Vishwanath. The duo also run Unocoin, India’s bitcoin exchange.”

India To “Look Into” Easing Gold Price Controls

logo3

“Two weeks ago, gold jumped to a then-2014 high, following reports out of India that the head of India’s Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi was pushing the government to cut its duty on gold and other restrictions. Today, now that the upward move in gold has finally resumed, it appears that the nation with the world’s most draconian gold capital controls, is finally starting to crack under pressure from the people, as well as a surge in gold smuggling via illegal channels to unprecedented levels. Reuters reports that India ‘will look into relaxing gold imports curbs, but won’t let its current account deficit (CAD) balloon, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said on Monday.'”

Ukraine to Regulate Bitcoin Businesses Under Existing Laws

“The NBU has indicated that bitcoin payment systems and payment infrastructure services must register with the agency and abide by existing laws related to the management of electronic money.  The announcement positions Ukraine closer to the European Union than Russia on matters of virtual currency regulation, even as Russia has moved to solidify its influence over the former USSR member state on the national stage.  Russia abruptly banned bitcoin earlier this year, in what has been one of the more hostile reactions to the emerging technology.”

Bank of Thailand: Bitcoin exchanges can resume operations

“It’s been months since Thailand’s largest Bitcoin exchange was forced to stop trading after the Bank of Thailand ruled that Bitcoin is ‘not a currency’. However, as of February 15, Thailand’s Bitcoin.co.th is ready to operate all types of Bitcoin transactions once again.  From the Bank of Thailand’s letter (PDF in Thai), the current situation is that Bitcoin can be traded in Thailand so long as it’s only converted to/from Thai baht. So Bitcoin cannot be used as a way of converting foreign currencies in the nation. The country’s top bank says it has no plans to expand the laws to regulate Bitcoin.”
