Bitcoin Now Accounts for 10% of Sales at Porn.com

“David Kay, marketing director for Porn.com’s parent company, Sagan Ltd, spoke to CoinDesk about his company’s progress so far, and noted that after one month, bitcoin purchases have “stabilized at 10%” of its sales.  Kay said that having a payment method that appeals to its customer base is key to delivering quality content, and that bitcoin satisfies this need. He explained: ‘I think surfers like the anonymity of purchasing a premium membership with bitcoin. They don’t have to worry about what shows up on their credit card statement.’  The United States has thus far accounted for the most bitcoin payments, with the United Kingdom and Canada rounding out the top three.”

Out of the ‘Shadows’: Pot Sellers Can Now Do Business With Banks

“The Obama administration issued new rules Friday intended to ease the concerns of banks wanting to deal with businesses that legally sell marijuana.  While 20 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws allowing the sale of medical and recreational marijuana, its production, sale, and possession remain illegal under federal law. And because the federal government regulates banking transactions, marijuana dealers have been unable to get banks to do business with them.  As a result, dealers operate strictly with cash, creating a tempting target for thieves. Treasury officials say the revised rules should reduce the dangers associated with conducting an all-cash business.”

Gas Station Owner Says IRS Grabbed $70K From His Bank Account

“He says he’s an innocent man, never charged with any crime, who doesn’t understand why — or how — the IRS could snatch $70,000 from his bank account.  Mark Zaniewski, owner of Metro Marathon in Sterling Heights, said the IRS emptied out his bank account twice over the course of a week this spring.  What’s he charged with? Nothing. What did he do? His attorney says he drew the suspicion of the IRS for repeatedly depositing less than $10,000 cash in his account. At $10,000 banks have to report the deposit to the feds, and under law, the IRS can seize assets under civil forfeiture laws if there’s a suspicion you’re trying to avoid the bank’s reporting mechanism.”

Venezuela students protesting economy shot dead by gunmen

“At least three people were shot dead as violence erupted during anti-government protests in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on Wednesday.  Students in the western states of Tachira and Merida have been at the forefront of the protests, saying they are fed up with the lack of security and the poor state of Venezuela’s economy.  The country has the highest inflation rate in the region at 56.2% in 2013, according to official figures.  It is also beset by shortages, with shoppers often having to search a number of supermarkets for staples such as milk and toilet paper.  The government has blamed the shortages on ‘saboteurs’ and ‘profit-hungry corrupt businessmen’.”

Woman with HIV alleges police bias in suit against Dearborn

“Jones’ vehicle, driven by a companion, was stopped Aug. 3, 2012, reportedly for a broken tail light and she ultimately was ticketed for marijuana possession. On the video, the officer is recorded telling Jones she was ticketed because he was ‘aggravated’ she hadn’t disclosed her HIV-positive status before the search.  The officer’s statements were ‘cruel, discriminatory as to her disability, and did cause emotional harm and embarrassment,’ according to the lawsuit.  In September, Dearborn dismissed a misdemeanor marijuana charge against Jones, her attorneys said.”

The Privileged Poacher on the Police Payroll

“After a felony arrest warrant was issued for Bowne, the deputy agreed to a deal in which he pleaded guilty to an ‘illegal take’ of a deer. He paid $4,199 in fines and court costs, and was fired by the LA County Sheriff’s Office. Bowne lost his job in May 2004. Like other disgraced California police officers before him, he followed the ‘gypsy cop’ ratline to Idaho, where he was able to get a job a little more than two years later.  Bowne received his ‘basic’ certification in June 2006. In order for this to happen, Bowne either concealed his background, the POST Council failed to conduct a rudimentary background check, or both parties simply ignored legally binding standards governing Idaho officer certification.”

Super Bowl Mic Hijack Proves Government Cannot Protect You

“Bomb sniffing dogs, 700 extra troopers, a 24-hour FBI command center, a vast network of surveillance cameras, the ‘See Something, Say Something’ snitch program in full force, TSA agents, snipers, no fly zones, helicopter patrols.  The bill for all this – which ran into tens of millions of dollars – was paid for by taxpayers despite the income-tax exempt NFL already getting a sales tax break at a further cost of $8 million to NJ residents.   30-year-old Matthew Mills made a mockery of all this when he crashed a press conference to tell the viewing millions that the 9/11 attacks were, ‘perpetrated by people in our own government,’ urging them to ‘investigate 9/11,’ before being dragged away.”

Officer sold police-issued bulletproof vests in Walgreens parking lot

“A Murfreesboro police officer is accused of selling police-issued bulletproof vests in a Walgreen’s parking lot.  Officer Jason Lowder is on administrative leave with pay and has been decommissioned from his duties as an officer pending the investigation into his alleged personal sale of police department property.  According to a police report, another officer saw a man placing a ballistic vest in the trunk of a car in the store’s parking lot on Northfield Boulevard. The officer asked the man about the vest, and the man said he bought it from a website.  The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Murfreesboro Police Department are investigating.”
