When Did the “Peace Officers” Get a “License to Kill”?

“Men dressed like the guys in the image below now patrol America’s cities. How would you react if this group of armed men pulled over your vehicle or detained you on the street?  If you don’t display the proper degree of submissiveness, there’s a real chance you’ll die, on the spot.  In 1980, SWAT teams were deployed 2,884 times nationwide. By 2010, the number had soared to 50,000 or more annually.  Initiatives like the federally funded ‘fusion centers’ that link local law enforcement agencies to federal databases train police to view citizens as potential terrorists. Is it any wonder that US police believe, like James Bond, that they have a license to kill?”

Texas cops drag young, weeping jogger away in cuffs for jaywalking

“University of Texas student Chris Quintero, who was sitting at a coffee shop across the street, caught the entire incident on camera.  Quintero told MyFoxAustin that the cops had been giving out citations to a number of people on that corner for jaywalking. They saw Stephen crossing the street and yelled out for her to stop. Quintero believes the woman couldn’t hear the cops because she was wearing headphones.  One of the cops allegedly grabbed the woman’s arm from behind. Stephen reacted by jerking her arm away.  Within minutes, she was handcuffed and on the ground.  She was arrested for failure to identify herself and for failing to obey a pedestrian crossing.”

Massachusetts man arrested for wiretapping after filming police officer

“We’re all hypocrites at heart. It’s how we manage it that gets us through the day.  Take those who are charged with surveilling others. They don’t always warm to being surveilled themselves.  Indeed, one police officer in Fall River, Mass., was allegedly miffed when a bystander, George Thompson, filmed him as he was talking on his flip phone.  Thompson says the officer was talking loudly and cursing. He also says the officer was on duty.  What happened next is that when the officer noticed Thompson had taken out his iPhone to film him, he allegedly stormed over and arrested Thompson on charges of illegal wiretapping.”

Man Recovers Camera Footage NYPD Cop Deleted After Attacking Him

“A New York City cop beat up and arrested a man for video recording him inside a subway station from 30 feet away Saturday night, walking up to him and getting in his face all while claiming the man was invading his personal space.  Officer Rojas, shield number 23404, then deleted the video, never mentioning the camera once in his arrest report, claiming the man had physically interfered with another arrest he was making.  But after spending 24 hours in jail, Shawn Randall Thomas managed to recover the deleted footage, proving that Rojas is not only a liar, but a bullying thug as well.”

Beaten, Thrown in Solitary After Calling 911 To Help Crashed Bicyclist

“I live in a new gilded age in a golden city. But sometimes the cracks show, even here. The façade crumbles and you find yourself naked, in solitary confinement, in a wretched, feces-stained prison.  How? As a result of my efforts to help injured bicyclists by calling 911, I was, in short order: separated from my friend, violently tackled, arrested, taken to county jail, stripped and left in a solitary cell. I am writing this story because, if it could happen to me, it could happen to you, and I feel the need to do something to help prevent this brutality from propagating.”

Congressman Calls To Ban U.S. Dollar After Senator’s Bitcoin Ban Idea

“Congressman Jared Polis is calling on the Treasury to ban physical dollars in response to Senator Manchin’s plea to ban Bitcoin. ‘The exchange of dollar bills, including high denomination bills, is currently unregulated and has allowed users to participate in illicit activity, while also being highly subject to forgery, theft, and loss,’ wrote Polis in a  statement.  To be sure, the Congressman is being cheeky. ‘This is just a satirical version of Senator Manchin’s letter, meant to draw attention to the fact that BitCoins are not any more susceptible to the problems that the Senator points out than dollars,’ said Spokesperson Scott Overland.”

Colorado Man Will Go to Trial Over $42 Girl Scout Cookie Purchase

“A Colorado man’s purchase of $42 of Girl Scout cookies has led to a court date and more than $700 in debt for what he says was an error by a Girl Scout troop’s bank.  Tad Osborn, an IT professional in Fort Collins, Colo., bought about a dozen boxes last year from a scout from his neighborhood. He wrote a check for $42 and enjoyed the cookies with his family.  Then last summer, he received a notice from a collection agency, informing him that his check had bounced and nearly doubled his bill to $82.  The debt collection agency, AAA Collectors Inc., sued Osborn for $739.85, the bulk of which is $450 in attorney fees, followed by court and principal costs.”

Private Prison Firm Agrees To Nationwide Settlement Over Violence

“GEO Group, which has been become known for inmate abuse, violations, and disregard for the truth, agreed to be subject to OSHA monitoring.  Among the allegations was its willful failure to provide adequate security staff in prisons and to equip staff with essential safety equipment that would protect staff from ‘stabbings, bites, and other injuries.’ Violations included failures as basic as failure to fix malfunctioning locks on cell doors. In one instance, there were only three guards at a prison.  GEO has faced allegations of intentionally under-staffing its prisons in a number of its facilities. In early February, the firm agreed to pay Idaho $1 million to settle a claim of chronic false staffing records.”
