Effort Launched To Free Missouri Man Serving Life For Marijuana Charge

“Efforts to release Jeff Mizanskey, the only man in Missouri serving a life-without-parole sentence for a nonviolent marijuana charge, are continuing this month with help from Show-Me Cannabis and Change.org.  Show-Me Cannabis has bought billboard space on I-70 near Kansas City (and near Sedalia, where Mizanskey was arrested). The billboard features a photo of Mizanskey and says: ‘Life without parole for cannabis? It’s time we fix our unjust marijuana laws.’  A photo of the billboard, which is on I-70 in Saline County, not far from where Mizanskey was arrested in Sedalia, can be seen above.”

Robbery convict imprisoned 13 years later after cleaning up his life

“After he was convicted of armed robbery in 2000, Cornealious Anderson was sentenced to 13 years behind bars and told to await instructions on when and where to report to prison. But those instructions never came.  So Anderson didn’t report. He spent the next 13 years turning his life around — getting married, raising three kids, learning a trade. He made no effort to conceal his identity or whereabouts. In a single day last July, Anderson’s life was turned upside-down. ‘They sent a SWAT team to his house,’ Anderson’s attorney, Patrick Megaro, said Wednesday. ‘He was getting his 3-year-old daughter breakfast, and these men with automatic weapons bang on his door.'”

$90 million spent on now-abandoned Maryland Obamacare exchange

“Maryland’s Obamacare exchange received millions in federal taxpayer dollars to build its Affordable Care Act website and was even awarded early innovator grants that earned it even more taxpayer funding. But the website crashed on the first day of open enrollment and officials have been unable to fix it.  The late decision won’t help anyone who hoped to sign up for health insurance on the exchange for 2014. The open enrollment period in Maryland closes Friday, with a special exception for more than 18,000 people who have already requested extra time to sign up due to the website’s problems.”

Marijuana Sector Update – April 14th 2014

“For those investing only in the public markets, we are clearly in a period of downward momentum and investors may want to wait until weaker sentiment drives a bottom in prices.  Shares have been falling with general sentiment in the market, especially for momentum names, but have met challenges of their own as well. The Securities & Exchange Commission halted shares of GrowLife (PHOT) on Thursday as a part of its larger investigation into the industry.  The trading halt follows another in late March for shares of Advanced Cannabis Solutions (CANN). The stock has since resumed trading but fell nearly 40% on the first day.”

Depends on where you live.  To help make the decision simpler, RealtyTrac crunched the numbers and created an interactive map of the rent/buy fault lines across America.  Baltimore has the most advantageous market in the U.S. for home buyers, with a net difference of $1,160 between renting and buying. Rents there average $1,599, but the average monthly mortgage payment is just $439, based on a median sales price of $85,000.  The San Francisco Bay Area’s six counties, (Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Mateo) all were in the nation’s top 10 most expensive to rent, averaging more than $2,400 a month.”

Home Lending Plunges to 17-Year Low; Higher Rates Curtail Borrowing

“Lenders made $226 billion of mortgages in the period, the smallest quarterly amount since 1997 and less than one-third of the 2006 average, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.  Lending has been tumbling since mid-2013 when mortgage rates jumped about a percentage point after the Federal Reserve said it might taper stimulus spending. A surge in all-cash purchases to more than 40 percent has kept housing prices rising, squeezing more Americans out of the market.  JPMorgan said it reduced the number of jobs at its mortgage unit by 30 percent, or 14,000 positions, since the start of last year.  Wells Fargo got rid of 1,100 jobs in its residential mortgage business.”
