“Home industry is particularly important to the poor for at least four reasons. First, the business overhead is usually low. Second, it allows people to use their labor as equity to develop a business for which financial or capital equity is not available. Third, it does not require higher education. Fourth, people own the means of production, such as an equipped kitchen or a garage with tools. Home industry also has the advantage of not draining the public purse—that is, production does not draw on government subsidies or privileges, which benefits individuals as producers, taxpayers, and consumers.  But does it benefit governments?”

Rancher, armed militias win standoff with Feds; govt returns cattle

“The tense stand-off between hundreds of protesters and police has ended in the Nevada desert, forcing the authorities to cancel the round-up of 300 animals and to return the cattle to their owner.  The standoff between rancher Cliven Bundy and the US Bureau of Land Management has lasted over a week, after hundreds of armed agents with the United States Bureau of Land Management and the FBI turned up in the Clark County to execute the court-ordered confiscation of nearly 1,000 cattle. The US government says the animals have trespassed on federal property.  This provoked a fierce backlash from anti-government groups, right-wing politicians and gun-rights activists.”

Zoning’s Racist Roots Still Bear Fruit

“Progressivism likes to think of government as defending minorities from discrimination by private enterprise. But time and again, history has shown progressive ideas marching in lockstep with racist motives.  The cities employing racial zoning included many Southern ones: Norfolk, Atlanta, Louisville, Birmingham, and more. But they were not limited to the South: Chicago practiced a form of racial zoning, too. San Francisco and other California cities used it to keep Chinese laundries in their place.  In Richmond, a 1911 zoning ordinance made it illegal to sell a house on a majority-white block to a black person, or a house on a majority-black block to a white person.”

Family Dollar to close 370 stores after net income falls 35% in Q2

“Family Dollar intends to take what it describes as ‘immediate, strategic actions,’ Levine said.  That includes plans to close approximately 370 underperforming stores and reduce the company’s work force.  Family Dollar operates about 8,100 stores in 46 states. It has about 34,000 employees.  Last week, the retailer announced it had cut 135 jobs at its headquarters — or roughly 6 percent of the corporate facility’s 2,400-employee work force in Matthews.   Family Dollar also plans to slow new-store growth beginning in fiscal 2015, with plans to open between 350 and 400 stores. That’s down from 525 stores this fiscal year.  Family Dollar also will lower prices on roughly 1,000 basic items, Levine said.”

Recent headlines also report that ‘U.S. has conveyed concerns to Iranian government through all channels.’  Why is that?  Why would the U.S. care about an oil trade that represents just 0.5% of all the oil that’s consumed in a given day?  Because it exposes America’s single greatest weakness — a weakness that, if truly exploited, would bring down our country.”

Initiated in 2010, the Free Market Foundation’s (FMF) Khaya Lam (my house) project serves to convert land currently held under a complex variety of restrictive tenures and titles to unambiguous, freely tradable ownership.  Secure property rights represent one of the most important requirements for the protection of both economic freedom and civil liberties. The Ngwathe municipality prides itself on the extent to which it has implemented land transformation for black South Africans.”

UN-backed Somalia government reintroduces taxes after 23 years

“The comprehensive new taxation system comprises both direct and indirect taxes on individuals and businesses. The plans detail tariff levels for taxes on income, property, corporate plus goods and services.  Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed said the government is committed to financial reforms so as to strengthen the country’s economy. ‘The minister of Finance has proposed a new tax system to ensure individuals and businesses are contributing their fair share to society and the rebuilding of our country,’ he said.  ‘The target [..] is to raise enough revenue to vastly improve the capacity of the government to deliver for its own people and eventually become self-sufficient.'”

Italian police seize makeshift tank built by Venice separatists

“The underground group, made up of radical separatists from the Lombardy, Sardinia and Veneto regions, had been planning to ‘liberate’ the iconic Venetian piazza using weapons from the Albanian mafia and set up a new independent government, police said.  They were planning an attack ‘by hundreds of people, some of them armed’ and ‘an insurrection from the inhabitants of northern Italy most affected by the economic crisis,’ law enforcers said in a statement.  The plan comes after more than two million residents of Venice and its surrounding region last month voted overwhelmingly in favour of breaking away from the rest of the country and forming their own state.”

Megaupload founder wants official cryptocurrency

“The Internet Party, an unregistered political party in New Zealand founded by German-Finnish entrepreneur Kim Dotcom, earlier this year, has made clear that, along with cheaper internet and more tech jobs, the party wants to introduce a cryptocurrency for international transactions that would work in parallel with the existing New Zealand dollar.  The Internet Party’s proposed cryptocurrency would be ‘safe, secure and encrypted, providing for instant international transactions at minimal cost,’ according to the party’s website.  Vikram Kumar, Chief Executive of the Internet Party, said that the proposed currency would not be outside of the New Zealand tax system.”

Poll: Three-fourths of US says pot will be legal

“Three-fourths of Americans say it’s inevitable that marijuana will be legal for recreational use across the nation, whether they support such policies or not, according to a public opinion poll released Wednesday that highlights shifting attitudes following the drug war era and tough-on-crime legislation.  The Pew Research Center survey also shows increased support for ending mandatory minimum prison sentences for non-violent drug offenders and doing away altogether with jail time for small amounts of marijuana.  Since California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996, at least 19 others and the District of Columbia have followed suit.”
