Airbnb Pressured Into Starting To Collect Hotel Taxes In San Francisco

“Airbnb said it will start collecting San Francisco’s 14 percent hotel tax on behalf of hosts today. The move counters critics who’ve claimed that the company has willfully dodged taxes to get ahead of traditional competitors in the hotel industry.  But as Airbnb has grown up and is now poised to command a possible $10 billion valuation from private investors, they’ve said they want to play by city rules.  The move follows the company’s announcement last week that it had reached a partnership with the city of Portland to pay transient lodging taxes, work with the city’s tourism bureau and offer guests the chance to donate to local causes.”

IRS office under fire: Vote for Obama stickers, campaign cheerleading

“In one case the Office of Special Counsel, which investigates federal employees who conduct politics on government time, said it was ‘commonplace’ in a Dallas IRS office for employees to have pro-Obama screensavers on their computers, and to have campaign-style buttons and stickers at their office.  In another case, a worker at the tax agency’s customer help line urged taxpayers ‘to re-elect President Obama in 2012 by repeatedly reciting a chant based on the spelling of his last name,’ the Office of Special Counsel said in a statement.  Another IRS employee in Kentucky has agreed to serve a 14-day suspension for blasting Republicans in a conversation with a taxpayer.”

Legislator’s Phony Tirade Denying IRS Targeting Exposed By Emails

Stop cheering – Quebec’s sovereignty movement is far from finished

And not only is Quebec relatively missing from the federal government at the political level but the core values championed by an avowedly small-c conservative government, issues such as its foreign and cultural policies and its greater emphasis on military history and symbols has unsurprisingly found less traction in a Quebec where those symbols and values are not resonant.”

Canada’s first public pot company has shipment seized by RCMP

“Tweed Marijuana Inc. became the first publicly traded medical pot company in Canada on Friday, but behind the scenes the Ontario production facility has apparently been searching for answers after a run-in with the law.  On Monday, the company was hoping to beef up its stock with a shipment of medical marijuana products that it says it acquired from B.C. growers who had previously been licensed to grow their marijuana at home.  Even though the company had received Health Canada’s approval to import such products, the Mounties, who the company said it had invited to inspect the shipment, ended up seizing it at the Kelowna International Airport.”

Solar energy plants in tortoises’ desert habitat pit green against green

“Plans to create two solar energy plants on public lands in California and Nevada are pitting renewable energy advocates against environmentalists who fear the facilities will endanger federally threatened desert tortoises in the area.  Federal officials on Wednesday announced the approval of two plants expected to supply 550 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power about 170,000 homes.  Environmentalists voiced concerns that construction will negatively impact populations of desert tortoises in the Ivanpah Valley.  In November the group Defenders of Wildlife filed a notice of intent to sue the government under the Endangered Species Act to block the projects.”
