Federal agents surround Nevada ranch in desert tortoise standoff

“A two-decades-old battle between a Nevada rancher and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has resulted in officials armed with machine guns surrounding the ranch and forcibly removing the owner’s cattle, according to the rancher’s family.  Cliven Bundy, the last rancher in Clark County, Nev., has been fighting a ‘one-man range war’ since 1993, when he decided to take a stand against the agency, refusing to pay fees for the right to graze on a ranch run by his family for centuries.  After years of court battles, the BLM secured a federal court order to have Bundy’s ‘trespass cattle’ forcibly removed with heavy artillery, the family said.”

Heartbleed vulnerability exploited months before patch?

“Usernames and passwords on some systems may have been exposed for months or years by the vulnerability, which has been part of every OpenSSL release since March 2012. There are signs that exploits for the vulnerability were in use by someone for some time before the vulnerability was revealed.  Terrence Koeman of MediaMonks told Ars he found signs of attempts dating back to November 2013. He used the packet content of a successful exploit of the Heartbleed vulnerability to check inbound packets logged by his servers and found a number of incoming packets from a network suspected of harboring a number of ‘bot’ servers that were apparently scans for the vulnerability.”

Why might you be denied entry to the US?

“As [Nigella Lawson’s] case demonstrates, the rules are liable to change. Weeks after her confession, she flew into America on New Year’s Day to film a live interview promoting the second series of The Taste USA. So those will a criminal history who had no problem getting in once, may fail to do so on other occasions.  There have also been dozens of incidents where travellers have been denied entry or even taken into custody for more unusual reasons than Nigella.  Other celebrities to have been prevented from entering the US for bad behaviour include Lily Allen, Pete Doherty, Amy Winehouse, footballer Jermaine Pennant and Boy George.”

Congress Uses ‘The Troops’ to Waste Your Money

ddc-header1

“In the previous decade, opposing war led to accusations: ‘You don’t support the troops.’   But who really hates the troops? Might it be politicians who use them as props?  Might it be that Congress hates the troops so much, that they’ll use them to create a slush fund?  There will be a 39% cut in troops in Afghanistan, but the war budget will fall by only 2%!  Troops died. Congress uses their memory to get pet pork programs.  And this happens, while boasting that the Defense ‘base’ budget is down.”

Larken Rose: What’s So Bad About Nazis?

“The question is not rhetorical. Too many people are really, really sure that there’s something really bad about being a Nazi, or about being a communist, but they can’t actually say WHAT is so bad, and can’t even define or describe what those philosophies advocate, or why they are so dangerous.”

Maryland Gov. O’Malley to sign marijuana decriminalization bill

“Martin O’Malley says he will sign a bill decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana. The bill would impose civil fines rather than criminal sanctions for carrying less than 10 grams of the drug.  The Maryland Senate approved the legislation Monday on a 38-8 votes. Although it has been a battle to get the legislation on the statute books and on Saturday the House of Delegates passed the bill by just seven votes. Opponents had been insisting that decriminalization would have sent the wrong message about drug use. The bill also narrowly escaped efforts by House judiciary Committee Joseph F Vallario Jr. (D-Prince’s George’s) and others to kill it in committee.”

New bitcoin debit card claims to work with 90 percent of US ATMs

“Bitcoiners may soon have a new way to use their cryptocurrency in the real world: the Cryptex Card, a new global bitcoin-to-cash ATM and debit card. The Hong-Kong based startup announced on Monday that it will begin shipping its cards in the next four to six weeks.  The Cryptex Card works like this: instead of buying products directly with bitcoin, the cardholder sends bitcoin to an address linked with the card, which converts it to cash. The card can then be used to withdraw money at more than 90 percent of U.S. ATMs or at certain ATMs in 80 countries. The cards are tied to Chinese card provider Union Pay, which lets the debit card work anywhere Discover cards are accepted.”

U.S. Attorney General Warns of Criminal Appeal of Bitcoin

“U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder told a congressional panel Tuesday that bitcoin and other virtual currencies raise new risks for money laundering and other illegal activity.  ‘More than ever before, the department’s law-enforcement work today must contend with new and emerging technology, including virtual currencies such as bitcoin,’ the attorney general said at a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee. ‘Virtual currencies can pose challenges for law enforcement given the appeal they have among those seeking to conceal illegal activity.’  In his remarks to Congress, Mr. Holder said federal prosecutors are working with financial regulators to understand the changing technology of money.”
