Irish Company Now Paying Employees’ Salaries in Bitcoin

“An Irish company has begun paying its employees’ salaries in bitcoin.  Dublin-based electronic repairs firm GSM Solutions, which hosts Ireland’s first bitcoin ATM, is now paying five of its employees partly in bitcoin instead of euros.  ‘We set salaries in euros, so that the euro amount they get each pay period does not fluctuate with the price of bitcoin,’ said GSM Solutions’ Managing Director Alan Donohoe in a blogpost.  Tony Vaughn, a small town sheriff from Kentucky, became the first US government employee to be paid in bitcoin.  GSM says it hopes to convert the rest of its employees to bitcoin by the end of the year.”

‘River of blood’ after drone crashes into Australian athlete

“The Civil Aviation Safety Authority says it is investigating an incident that involved an athlete in a West Australian triathlon being injured by a drone that was filming the event.  Raija Ogden said she was hit on the head by the drone on Sunday when it crashed. But the drone’s owner says she was simply frightened by the machine and fell to the ground.  At least one spectator Fairfax Media spoke to backed her claim. Another, who wrote on Facebook that they saw the incident, said that the drone hit Mrs Ogden and appeared to be an accident.  ‘I have lacerations on my head from the drone and the ambulance crew took a piece of propeller from my head,’ Mrs Ogden told The West Australian.”

Cities to Carpoolers: Sharing Your Car is Illegal, We Will Seize Your Car

“The U.S. isn’t exactly a ‘free market’, with outright bribery — condoned by the U.S. judicial system — or collusive public-private cartels leading to some products and services being banned from the market.  Just ask Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA) whose electric vehicles have been banned from sale in many states.  That debacle arose due to the fact that Tesla has no dealerships and fearful dealership lobbyists banded together to pay off state politicians to ban direct auto sales. Now the same principle is being applied to stymie the emergency of another set of companies in the transportation sector — cloud-driven ride-sharing services.”

Collectivists Posing As “Anarchists” Demand $3 Billion From Google

“A group of anti-capitalist protesters referring to themselves as ‘anarchists’ demonstrated outside the home of Digg founder and Google Ventures partner Kevin Rose on Sunday, and demanded that Google hand over $3 billion to fund the creation of ‘autonomous, anti-capitalist, and anti-racist communities throughout the Bay Area and Northern California.’  The protest was allegedly organized by a group called The Counterforce, and they call Rose a ‘meta-leech’ who is to blame for the rising cost of living in the Bay Area. Rose has invested heavily in several tech startups, and these startups have moved to the Bay Area to run their businesses.”

Supreme Court passes on NSA bulk phone surveillance case

“The Supreme Court declined Monday to resolve the constitutionality of the National Security Agency’s bulk telephone metadata surveillance program, leaving intact what a lower-court judge described as an ‘almost-Orwellian’ surveillance effort in which the metadata from every phone call to and from the United States is catalogued by US spies.  The high court’s inaction Monday means the future of the phone surveillance program will most likely play itself out in the political theater before the judicial arena. Section 215 of the Patriot Act, the stated provision allowing the bulk collection, expires June 1, 2015. There are some 30 different legislative packages in Congress on the topic.”

Fandango, Credit Karma exposed millions of smartphone users’ data

“Developers of two popular smartphone apps—Fandango and Credit Karma—have been caught transmitting passwords, social security numbers, birth dates, and other highly sensitive user data over the Internet without properly encrypting it first, officials with the Federal Trade Commission said.  As a result, it was trivial for hackers to intercept the data when people used the apps on both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android mobile operating systems, complaints filed by the FTC alleged. The complaints leveled charges of other shortcomings in the developers’ security, including the failure to properly test and audit the safety of apps before making them available for download.”

Critical crypto bug exposes Yahoo Mail, other passwords

“Lest readers think ‘catastrophic’ is too exaggerated a description for the critical defect affecting an estimated two-thirds of the Internet’s Web servers, consider this: at the moment this article was being prepared, the so-called Heartbleed bug was exposing end-user passwords, the contents of confidential e-mails, and other sensitive data belonging to Yahoo Mail and almost certainly countless other services.  The two-year-old bug is the result of a mundane coding error in OpenSSL, the world’s most popular code library for implementing HTTPS encryption in websites, e-mail servers, and applications.”

“The amount of debt globally has soared more than 40 percent to $100 trillion since the first signs of the financial crisis as governments borrowed to pull their economies out of recession and companies took advantage of record low interest rates.  The $30 trillion increase from $70 trillion between mid-2007 and mid-2013 compares with a $3.86 trillion decline in the value of equities to $53.8 trillion, according to the Bank for International Settlements and data compiled by Bloomberg.  Borrowing has soared as central banks suppress benchmark interest rates to spur growth Yields on all types of bonds, from governments to corporates and mortgages, average about 2 percent.”

The Next Best Thing

“The Chinese have already forged agreements amongst the BRICS and the ASEAN nations to use the yuan as the currency of trade, with countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and the UK agreeing to trade in the yuan in future.  It may well be that China intends to sew up the world with yuan agreements, with the US as the last man standing, then pull the plug by simply by refusing outright to accept any further US debt of any kind. At that point, the US would be isolated and, in order to trade, would be forced to cave to the yuan as the currency of world trade.  If this were to take place, the remaining question would be whether the dollar would remain as the US currency.”
