Perhaps a mania will develop in the companies that are legally growing marijuana in Canada, a space where I recently made an investment. CFPB targets ‘zombie’ foreclosures

“Zombie foreclosures result when banks begin a foreclosure -even going so far as to send the homeowners a foreclosure notice – but then abandon it, failing to alert the homeowners, who have often moved out, that they are still responsible for their vacant properties.  Borrowers, who don’t realize they still own their homes, are then left responsible for mortgage debt, taxes and upkeep.  Zombie foreclosures usually occur on low-value properties that weren’t worth the banks‘ time to foreclose upon. Rather, the banks charged the houses off. Banks have been walking away from foreclosures much the way some homeowners walked away from their mortgages.”

You’d Have Better Luck Converting Them To Jehovah’s Witnesses

“Mayor Bill de Blasio’s absolutely ridiculous ‘Vision Zero’ plan seeks to reduce traffic deaths to zero by drastically increasing police enforcement. It’s delusional to think that fatal accidents could ever be fully eliminated, no matter how many police officers or enforcement cameras there are on the streets. It’s not unlike trying to totally eliminate bathtub falls by putting a police officer or a camera in every bathroom.  Jaywalkers in particular have been singled out for extra attention by the police in ‘Vision Zero.’ Consider the story of Kang Wong, an 84-year-old man who was recently stopped for jaywalking near Broadway and 96th Street at around 5 in the evening.”

What Happened to Chicago’s Murder Rate After Concealed Carry Law?

“In July of 2013, Illinois became the last state in the union to enact a concealed carry law. In January of this year, the state began accepting applications for permits. This week, Chicago police announced that the city’s first quarter murder rate was the lowest since 1958.  Coincidence? Hard to say. And too early to tell. Although, I doubt that the anti-gun crowd is celebrating the good news.”

The Battle for Self-Ownership in Medical Care

“We are working in systems where third parties call the game. This was initiated by Bismarck way back, we still have Bismarckian model which is overbearing in most of Europe. Bismarck is dead now and I think this model will probably die as well. It’s dead in Georgia, and it will die elsewhere. How can you reestablish the direct contract between patients and doctors? That’s one of the keys of achieving self-ownership for patients in so far as they can choose their doctor and also autonomy for doctors who can concentrate their work on their patients without third parties telling them what to do. That’s one way, and there’s several means of doing it.”

Crisis Looms for Crimea Opiate Addicts as Russia Bans Methadone

“Things are about to get harder for opiate users in Crimea, the former Ukrainian province now annexed by Russia. While Ukraine has embraced a harm reduction approach to hard drug use, Russia rejects such an approach and has some of the most repressive drug laws in the world.  On Wednesday, Russian ‘drug czar’ Viktor Ivanov — one of 31 allies of Pres. Vladimir Putin sanctioned by the US government this month — announced that Russia will ban the use of methadone in Crimea. That comes after vows a week before that he would move away from harm reduction practices in general in Crimea.”

Using drugs available overseas, some of which are still not marketed in the US, Woodroof beats the odds.  While Woodroof was fighting the FDA, I was working at a major pharmaceutical firm. By the time that the FDA gave us permission to test our drugs in people, every AIDS patient in the country who wanted them had already tried them. The Buyers Clubs either obtained them overseas or hired black market chemists to make them. Much valuable information about how these drugs worked—or didn’t work—could have been obtained from these Clubs if their operations hadn’t been in legal limbo.”

Oklahoma changes lethal injection drugs due to seller withholdings

“Short of the chemicals it normally uses to execute people, Oklahoma wants to use new lethal drug combinations, including one that took 25 minutes to kill a man in Ohio, according to a legal brief filed Monday.  The updated procedure allows for the use of a single dose of pentobarbital, a new three drug cocktail using midazolam and hydromorphone, or a third new option that allows the state to replace another scarce drug, vecuronium bromide, with a comparable drug.  States are having a harder time finding lethal injection drugs as manufacturers and compounding pharmacies have come under public scrutiny and have become increasingly reluctant to provide them for executions.”

Man can’t donate organs before execution, due to needing to recover

“An Ohio death-row inmate can’t donate his organs to a family member because he wouldn’t have enough time to recover from the operation before his execution, a state prison official said Friday.  Gov. John Kasich postponed Ronald Phillips’ execution from last November to this July to see whether he would be a viable organ donor to his mother, who has kidney disease. His sister, who suffers from heart disease, was also initially mentioned as a possible recipient.  Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols said the governor won’t further postpone Phillips’ execution. Nichols declined to comment further.”

FBI Helps Itself To 91-Year-Old Man’s Basement Museum

“The 91-year-old is a veteran, former teacher, and was part of the Manhattan Project which created the atomic bomb — and over eight decades has traveled to more than 200 countries, collecting and bartering for artifacts along the way.  Federal agents took over Miller’s home in Waldron, Ind., about 35 miles southeast of Indianapolis, on Wednesday because they believe some of his artifacts may violate several treaties and could have been ‘acquired improperly.’  While Miller invited the agents inside his home and said everything is rightfully his, officials are making sure in a big way. A command station, trucks, and huge tents surround Miller’s house, along with crime scene tape.”
